तत्तुल्यं धेनुदाने च ह्यर्धं सामान्यगोस्तथा । लभेद्वत्सप्रसूतानां दाने दाने फलं भुवः
For donating a cow equal to that, the result is half; for an ordinary cow, likewise. For giving a cow that has calved, the donor attains the fruit on earth for each such gift.
भूमिदाने रेणुमानवर्ष स्थानं च मत्पदे । ज्ञानदाने महत्पुण्यं वैकुण्ठे मोदते चिरम्
By donating land, even as much as a particle of dust, one attains a place at my feet; by giving knowledge, one gains great merit and enjoys in Vaikuntha for a long time.
श्रियं लभेत्स्वर्णदाने राजत्वं रजतेन च । अन्नदाने फलं गहं कथं जानामि पै शुतम्
By giving gold, one attains prosperity; by giving silver, sovereignty; the fruit of giving food is a house—how can I fully describe what is heard about it?
लभते सर्वदानस्य फलं ब्रह्मणभोजने । अन्नदानात्परं दानं न भूतं न भविष्यति
By feeding a Brahmin, one obtains the fruit of all gifts; there has never been, nor will there ever be, a gift greater than the giving of food.
नात्र पात्रपरीक्षाऽस्ति न कालनियमः क्वचित् । अन्नदाने शुभं पुण्यं दातुः पात्रं त्वपातकी
Here, there is no need to examine the recipient, nor is there any restriction of time; in the giving of food, great merit accrues to the giver, and the recipient is not stained by sin.
अन्नदानं च धन्यं स्याद्भूमौ वैकुण्ठहेतुकम् । वस्त्रं ददाति विप्रय दरिद्राय कुटुम्बिने
The giving of food is blessed on earth and leads to Vaikuntha; one who gives clothing to a Brahmin, to a poor person, or to a householder—
वस्त्रंसूत्रमानवर्ष वैकुण्ठे मोदते चिरम् । सुरम्ये चन्द्रलोके च वारुणे च तथैव च
For each thread of cloth given, one enjoys in Vaikuntha for a long time, as well as in the delightful realms of the moon and Varuna.
कृत्वा लोहप्रदीपं च स्वर्णवर्तिसमन्वितम् । दत्तवा घृतप्रदीपं च हरये परमात्मने
Having made a lamp of iron with a golden wick, or given a ghee lamp to Hari, the Supreme Soul—
अन्धकारं च न गृहं यमदूतं यमं तथा । न हि पश्यति दाता च प्रयाति मम मन्दिरम्
Darkness does not enter that person's house, nor do the messengers of Yama or Yama himself appear; the giver does not see them and goes to my abode.
ब्रह्मणाय च दत्तवैव न याति यमयातनाम् । दिव्यवर्षसहश्रं च मोदते शक्रमन्दिरे
One who gives to a Brahmin does not go to the realms of Yama; for a thousand divine years, the giver enjoys in the palace of Indra.
आसनं लभते स्वर्गे वस्तुमात्रानुरूपतः । उत्तमे लक्षवर्षे च तदर्ध चेतरे व्रजेत्
One attains a seat in heaven proportionate to the value of the gift; for the best gifts, a hundred thousand years, and for half that, accordingly.
ताम्पूलेन लभेद्भोगं स्वर्गे वर्षशतं व्रजेत् । माल्यदाने प्रियं स्वर्ग वस्तुमात्रानुरूपतः
By giving betel nut, one enjoys pleasures in heaven for a hundred years; by giving garlands, one attains dear heaven, proportionate to the value of the gift.
फलदानफलं स्वर्ग लभते नात्र संशयः । सामान्यशय्यादानेन स्वर्ग वर्षशतं व्रजेत्
By giving fruit, one attains the fruit of heaven—there is no doubt of this; by giving an ordinary bed, one enjoys a hundred years in heaven.
चतुर्गुणं प्रकृष्टायां गुणलक्षं दिलक्षणे । अनाथाय सुविप्राय यदि गेहं प्रदीयते
For an excellent bed, the result is fourfold; for one of medium quality, a hundred thousand times; if a home is given to an orphan or a worthy Brahmin—
अत्रैव मानवर्ष च शक्रलोके महीयते । दृष्ट्वा बुभुक्षितं विप्रमन्नं तस्मै प्रदीयते
Here itself, for as many years as there are hairs on the body, one is honored in the realm of Indra; seeing a hungry Brahmin and giving him food—
अयलां श्रियमाप्नोति पुत्रपौत्रविवर्धिनीम् । व्रजनाथ व्रजं गत्वा व्रजभूमौ व्रजाधुना
One attains inexhaustible wealth, which increases sons and grandsons; O lord of Vraja, having gone to Vraja, now in the land of Vraja—
व्रज भोजय विपांश्च व्रज सर्व व्रजे व्रजे । गोकुले गोकुले वत्स वत्स वत्स निराकुले
Go to Vraja, feed the Brahmins, go to Vraja, all in Vraja, in Vraja; in Gokula, in Gokula, O calf, O calf, O calf, in the place free of distress.
व्याकुलानां गोकुलानां संकुले च व्रजे व्रजे । एतत्ते कथितं नन्द सानन्दं पुण्यवर्धनम्
Among the troubled Gokulas and the crowded Vrajas, this has been told to you, O Nanda, joyful and increasing merit.
काश्यपं दुर्भगं नीचं शत्रुमज्ञानिनं स्त्रेयम् । त्यक्त्वा रात्रिं च दिवसे वक्ति विप्रं मुपण्डितम्
Having abandoned Kāśyapa, unfortunate, low, enemy, ignorant, and woman; at night and by day, speak to the Brahmin who is learned.
देवालये च देवं वाऽप्यश्वत्थतुलशीवटम् । उक्त्वा तद्द्विगुणं पुण्यमप्रकाश्य चतुर्गुणम्
In the temple or to the deity, or at the banyan or tulasi tree, having spoken, the merit is doubled; if not revealed, it is quadrupled.
सुस्वप्नदर्शने प्राज्ञो गंगास्नानफलं लभेत् । अर्थं वित्तं च भार्या च भूमिं पुत्रं लभेत्प्रजाम्
Upon seeing a good dream, the wise one obtains the fruit of bathing in the Ganges; he gains wealth, riches, wife, land, son, and offspring.
मोक्षं च परमैश्वर्यं लभते सर्ववाञ्छितम् । इत्येवं कथितं तात किं भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि
He attains liberation and supreme prosperity, and all desired things; thus it has been told, dear one, what more do you wish to hear?
अथ सप्तस्पततितमोऽध्यायः नन्द उवाच केन स्पप्नेन किं पुण्यं केन मोक्षो भवेत्सुखम् । कोऽपि कोऽपि च सुस्वप्नस्तत्सर्वं कथय प्रभो
Then, the seventy-seventh chapter. Nanda said: By which dream is merit gained, by which is liberation and happiness attained? Which, which is a good dream? Tell me all of this, O Lord.
श्रीभगवानुवाच वेदेषु सामवेदश्च प्रशस्तः सर्वकर्मसु । तथैव कण्वशाखायां पुण्यकाण्डे मनोहरे
The Blessed Lord said: Among the Vedas, the Sāma Veda is praised in all rituals; likewise, in the Kaṇva branch, in the delightful section on merit.
स व्यवतो यश्च दुःस्वप्नः शश्वतपुण्यफलप्रदः । तत्सर्व निखिलं तात कथयामि निशामय
That which is auspicious and that which is an evil dream, both grant perpetual fruits of merit; all of this, dear one, I will tell you, listen.
स्वप्नाध्यायं प्रवक्ष्यामि बहुपुण्यफलप्रदम् । स्वप्नाध्यायं नरः श्रुत्वा गङ्गास्नानफलं लभेत्
I will declare the chapter on dreams, which bestows many fruits of merit; hearing the chapter on dreams, a man obtains the fruit of bathing in the Ganges.
स्वप्नक्तु प्रथमे यामे संवत्सरफलप्रदः । द्वितीये चाष्टभिर्मासैस्त्रिभिर्मासैस्तृतीयरे
A dream seen in the first watch of the night gives the fruit of a year; in the second, after eight months; in the third, after three months.
चतुर्थे चार्धमासेन स्वप्नः स्वात्मफलप्रदः । दशाहे फलदः स्वप्नोऽप्यरुणोदयदर्णने
In the fourth, after half a month, the dream gives its own fruit; a dream seen at dawn gives its fruit in ten days.
प्रातःस्वप्नश्च फलदस्तत्क्षणं यदि बोधितः । दिने मनसि यद्दृष्टं तत्सर्व च लभेद्ध्रुवम्
A dream seen in the morning gives its fruit immediately if one awakens at that moment; whatever is seen in the mind during the day, all of that is surely obtained.
चिन्ताव्याधिसमायुक्तो नरः स्वप्नं च पश्यति । तत्सर्व निष्फलं तात प्रयात्येव न संशयः
A man afflicted by anxiety or disease sees a dream; all of that, dear one, is fruitless, it passes away, there is no doubt.
