सर्पो भवति कोपैन दर्पेण गर्दभो भवेत् । कुक्कुरी च कुवाक्येनाप्यन्धश्च विषदर्शनात्
One becomes a snake from anger, a donkey from arrogance; a bitch from evil speech, and blind from seeing poison.
पतिव्रता च वैकुण्ठं पत्या सह व्रजेद्ध्रुवम् । शिवं दुर्गां गणपतिं सूर्य विप्रं च वैष्णवम्
A devoted wife certainly goes to Vaikuntha together with her husband; Shiva, Durga, Ganapati, Surya, the Brahmin, and the Vaishnava.
विष्णुं निन्दति यो मूढः स महारौरवं व्रजेत् । पितरं मातरं पुत्रं सतीं भार्यां गुरुं तथा
Whoever, foolish, blasphemes Vishnu, goes to Maharaurava hell; likewise, father, mother, son, chaste wife, and guru.
अनाथां भगिनीं कन्यां विनिन्द्य नरकं व्रजेत् । विप्रभक्तिविहीनाश्च क्षत्रविट्शूद्रयोनिजा
Whoever reviles an orphan, sister, or maiden, goes to hell; those devoid of devotion to Brahmins, born of Kshatriya, Vaishya, or Shudra wombs.
हरिभक्तिविहीनाश्च पच्यन्ते नरमे ध्रुवम् । पतिभक्तिविहीनाश्च युवत्यश्च नराधमाः
Those devoid of devotion to Hari are certainly cooked in hell; young women lacking devotion to their husbands are the lowest among men.
शालग्रामजलं विष्णुप्रसादं ये च भुञ्जते । तीर्य पुनन्ति ते विप्राः शतं पुंसां वसुंधराम्
Those who partake of Shalagrama water and Vishnu’s favor purify a hundred men and the earth, O Brahmins, even if they are animals.
पितृन्देवान्समम्यर्च्य खादन्मासं द्विजः शुचिः । यो भक्षति वृथा मांसं स महारौरवं व्रजेत्
Having worshipped ancestors and gods, a pure twice-born who eats meat for a month; whoever eats meat in vain goes to Maharaurava hell.
मत्स्यांश्च कामतो जग्ध्वा चोपवासं वसेद्द्विजः । प्रायश्चित्तं ततः कुर्याद्व्रतं चान्द्रायणं चरेत्
Having eaten fish out of desire, a twice-born should observe a fast; then perform atonement and undertake the Chandrayana vow.
कामतो ब्राह्मणो मत्स्यं भुङ्क्ते यो ज्ञानदुर्बलः । सोऽशुचिः सततं नन्द हन्ति पुण्यं पुराकृतम्
A Brahmin who eats fish out of desire, lacking wisdom, is always impure, O Nanda, and destroys the merit previously acquired.
विष्णोरुच्चिष्टभोजी यो मत्स्यं मांसं न खादति । पदे पदेऽश्वमेधस्य लभते निश्चितं फलम्
Whoever eats the remnants of Vishnu’s food but does not eat fish or meat, certainly obtains the fruit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice at every step.
एकादशीं ये कुर्वन्ति कृष्णजन्माष्टमीव्रतम् । शतजन्मकृतात्पापान्मुच्यन्ते नात्र संशयः
Those who observe the Ekadashi and the vow of Krishna's birth on Ashtami are freed from sins committed over a hundred lifetimes; there is no doubt about this.
यद्बालये यच्च कौमारे वार्धके यच्च यौवने । भस्मीभूतानि कुर्वन्ति पातकानि कृतानि च
Whatever sins are committed in childhood, youth, old age, or adolescence, are reduced to ashes by these observances.
एकादशीदिने भुङ्क्ते कृष्णजन्माष्टमीव्रते । त्रैलोक्यजनितं पापं सोऽपि भुङ्क्ते न संशयः
Whoever eats on the day of Ekadashi or during the vow of Krishna's birth on Ashtami certainly partakes of the sins generated in the three worlds; there is no doubt.
आतुरे नियमो न स्यादपि वृद्धे च बालके । भक्तस्य द्विगुणं दत्त्वा ब्राह्मणाय शुचिर्भवेत्
For the sick, the elderly, and children, the rule does not apply; by giving double to a Brahmin, the devotee becomes pure.
यो भुङ्क्ते शिवरात्रौ च श्रीरामनवमीदिने । उपवासे समर्थश्च स महारौरवं व्रजेत्
Whoever eats on Shiva's night or on the day of Rama's birth, though capable of fasting, will go to the great hell called Maharaurava.
कुहूपूर्णेन्दुसंक्रान्तिचतुर्दश्यष्टमीषु च । नरश्चाण्डालयोनिः स्यात्स्त्रीतैलमांससेवनात्
On the days of new moon, full moon, solstice, fourteenth, and eighth lunar days, a person is born in a low caste if a woman consumes oil or meat.
मत्स्यं मांसं मसूरं च कांस्यपात्रे च भोजनम् । आर्द्रकं रक्तशाकं च रवौ च परिवर्जयेत्
One should avoid eating fish, meat, lentils, food served in bronze vessels, ginger, red leafy vegetables, and eating during the daytime.
अन्यथा नरकं याति कुम्भीपाकं न संशयः । रजस्वरान्नं वेश्यान्नं मदिरान्नं व्रजेश्वर
Otherwise, one certainly goes to the hell called Kumbhipaka; food from a menstruating woman, a prostitute, or intoxicating food, O Lord of Vraja.
यो भुङ्क्ते ब्राङ्मणो दैवाद्विड्भोजी स भवेद्ध्रुवम् । यदह्ना कुरुते कर्म न तस्य फलभाग्भवेत्
A Brahmin who eats food from a lower caste, even by accident, certainly becomes one who eats excrement; whatever action he performs that day, he does not obtain its fruit.
स भवेदशुचिर्नित्यं भस्मान्तं तस्य सूतकम् । नारी वेश्या प्रतिज्ञेया चतुष्पुरुषगामिनी
He becomes perpetually impure, his impurity lasting until cremation; a woman who goes to four men is to be known as a prostitute.
पाके च पितृदेवानामधिकारो न तद्भवेत् । यद्ग्रामयाजिनामन्नं शूद्रश्राद्धान्नभोजनम्
He does not have the right to cook for the ancestors or the gods; nor to eat food from village priests or food offered at a Shudra's funeral.
भुक्त्वा च नरकं याति यावच्चन्द्रदिवाकरौ । शूद्राणां श्राद्धदिवसे तदन्नं भुञ्जते द्धिजाः
After eating such food, one goes to hell as long as the moon and sun endure; Brahmins who eat that food on the day of a Shudra's funeral.
कुम्भीपाके च पच्यन्ते यावद्वै ब्रह्मणः शतम् । यः शूद्रेणाभ्यनुज्ञातो भुङ्क्ते श्राद्धदिनेऽन्यतः
They are cooked in the hell Kumbhipaka for a hundred years of Brahma; whoever, permitted by a Shudra, eats elsewhere on the day of a funeral.
सुरापीति स विज्ञेयः सर्वधर्मबहिष्कृतः । असिजीवी मषीजीवी देवलो वृषवाहकः
He is to be known as a drinker of liquor, excluded from all duties; one who lives by the sword, by ink, a temple priest, or a bull driver.
शूद्राणां शवदाही च यो हि शूद्रापतिद्धिजः । स शूद्रवद्वहिष्कार्यस्तदन्नं विट्समं सताम्
A Brahmin who cremates Shudras or is the leader of Shudras should be expelled like a Shudra; such food is considered impure for the virtuous.
नोपतिष्ठति यः पूर्वां नोपास्ते यस्तु पश्चिमाम् । स शूद्रवद्बहिष्कार्यः सवंस्माद्द्विजकर्मणः ।। ७० संध्याहीनोऽशुचिर्नित्यमनर्हः सर्वकर्मसु । यदह्नाकुरुते कर्म न तस्य फलभाग्भवेत्
Whoever does not perform the morning or evening rituals should be expelled like a Shudra from all Brahminical duties; one without the twilight worship is always impure and unfit for all rites; whatever action he performs that day, he does not obtain its fruit.
वाममन्त्रोपासकश्च ब्राह्माणो नरकं व्रजेत् । नदीगर्भे च गर्ते च दृक्षमूले जलान्तिके
A Brahmin who worships with left-handed mantras goes to hell; likewise, one who relieves himself in a river, a pit, at the root of a tree, or near water.
देवान्तिके सस्यभूमौ पुरीषं नोत्सृजेद्बुधः । वल्मीकमूषकोत्खातां मृदमन्तर्जलां तथा
A wise person should not excrete near the gods, in a field of crops, or on an anthill, in a mouse hole, or in muddy water.
शौचावशिष्टां गेहाच्च नाऽऽदद्याल्लेपसंभवाम् । अन्तःप्राणिपिपील्यां च हलोत्खातां व्रजेश्वर
O lord of Vraja, one should not take earth that remains after cleaning, nor earth from a house that is tainted, nor earth inhabited by insects or creatures within, nor earth that has been dug up by a plough.
आलवालोत्थितां चैव सस्यक्षेत्रोत्थितां तथा । वृक्षमूलोत्थितां नन्द नदीगर्भोत्थितां तथा
Likewise, O Nanda, one should not take earth that has sprouted with grass, nor earth from a cultivated field, nor earth from the root of a tree, nor earth from the bed of a river.
