वृक्षं कण्टकयुक्तं च लतादि परिवर्जयेत्
One should avoid trees with thorns and creepers, and the like.
खर्जूरं नारिकेलं च तालं च परिवर्जयेत्
One should avoid kharjūra, coconut, and tāla trees.
शौचहीनोऽशुचि र्नित्यमनर्हः सर्वकर्मसु
One who lacks purity is always impure and unfit for all actions.
प्रक्षाल्य पादावाचम्य प्रातःसन्ध्यां समाचरेत् 1.26.
Having washed the feet and rinsed the mouth, one should perform the morning sandhyā.
स स्नातः सर्वतीर्थेषु त्रिसन्ध्यं यः समाचरेत्
He who bathes in all holy waters and performs the three sandhyās,
यदह्ना कुरुते कर्म न तस्य फलभाग्भवेत्
Whatever action he performs during the day, he does not obtain its fruit.
स शूद्रवद्बहिष्कार्य्यः सर्वस्माद्द्विजकर्मणः
He should be expelled from all duties of a twice-born, like a Śūdra.
ब्रह्महत्यामात्महत्यां प्रत्यहं लभते द्विजः
The twice-born incurs the sin of killing a Brāhmaṇa and of self-slaughter every day.
कल्पं व्रजेत्कालसूत्रं यथा हि वृषलीपतिः
He goes to the Kālasūtra hell for an age, just like the husband of a low-caste woman.
ब्रह्माणमीशं विष्णुं च मायां पद्मां सरस्वतीम्
Brahmā, Īśa, Viṣṇu, Māyā, Padmā, and Sarasvatī—
स्पृष्ट्वा स्नानादिकं काले कुर्यात्साधकसत्तमः
Having touched water, at the proper time, the excellent practitioner should perform bathing and related rites.
समुद्धृत्य पञ्चपिण्डानादौ धर्मी विचक्षणः
Having taken up the five balls of food at the beginning, the wise and righteous one should proceed.
कुर्य्यात्स्नात्वा तु सङ्कल्पं ततः स्नानं पुनर्मुने
After bathing, one should make a resolve, and then, O sage, bathe again.
सङ्कल्पो गृहिणां चैव कृतपातकनाशकः 1.26.
For householders, the resolve destroys sins that have been committed.
वेदोक्तमन्त्रेणानेन देहशुद्धिकृते नरः
With this Vedic mantra, a person should purify the body.
मृत्तिके हर मे पापं यन्मया दुष्कृतं कृतम्
O earth, take away my sin, whatever wrong I have done.
आरुह्य मम गात्राणि सर्वं पापं प्रमोचय
Having come upon my limbs, remove all my sins.
इत्युक्त्वा च जले नाभिप्रमाणे मन्त्रपूर्वकम्
Having spoken thus, and standing in water up to the navel, with the mantra as prescribed,
तीर्थान्यावाहयेत्तत्र हस्तं दत्त्वा तपोधन
One should invoke the sacred waters there, placing the hand, O ascetic.
गङ्गे च यमुने चैव गोदावरि सरस्वति
O Gaṅgā, O Yamunā, O Godāvarī, O Sarasvatī,
नलिनी नन्दिनी सीता मालिनी च महापगा
O Nalinī, O Nandinī, O Sītā, O Mālinī, O great river,
पद्मावती भोगवती स्वर्णरेखा च कौशिकी
O Padmāvatī, O Bhogavatī, O Svarṇarekhā, O Kauśikī,
विद्याधरी सुप्रसन्ना तथा लोकप्रसाधिनी
O Vidyādharī, O Suprasannā, and also O Lokaprasādhinī,
सावित्री तुलसी दुर्गा महालक्ष्मीः सरस्वती 1.26.
O Sāvitrī, O Tulasī, O Durgā, O Mahālakṣmī, O Sarasvatī,
अहल्या चादितिः संज्ञा स्वधा स्वाहाऽप्यरुन्धती
O Ahalyā, O Aditi, O Saṃjñā, O Svadhā, O Svāhā, and O Arundhatī,
स्नात्वा स्नात्वा महापूतः कुर्य्यात्तु तिलक बुधः
Having bathed repeatedly, being greatly purified, the wise one should then apply the tilaka mark.
स्नानं दानं तपो होमो देवतापितृकर्म च
Bathing, giving, austerity, oblation, and rites for the gods and ancestors—
ब्राह्मणस्तिलकं कृत्वा कुर्य्यात्सन्ध्यां च तर्पणम्
A brāhmaṇa, having applied the tilaka, should perform the twilight worship and the offering of water.
प्रक्षाल्य पादौ यत्नेन धृत्वा धौते च वाससी
Carefully washing the feet and putting on clean garments,
विना पादक्षालनं यः स्नात्वा विशति मन्दिरम्
Whoever, after bathing, enters the temple without washing the feet,
