कृत्वा तु लोष्टशौचं च जलशौचं ततः परम्
After cleansing with a lump of earth, then purify with water.
एकां लिङ्गे मृदं दद्याद्वामहस्ते चतुष्टयम्
For the penis, apply earth once; for the left hand, four times.
मूत्रशौचं द्विगुणितं मैधुनानन्तरं यदि
For cleansing after urination, use twice the amount, especially after intercourse.
एका लिङ्गे गुदे तिस्रस्तथा वामकरे दश 1.26.
For the penis, three times; for the anus, ten times on the left hand.
पुरीषशौचं विप्राणां गृहिणामिदमेव च
This is the rule for fecal cleansing for Brahmins and householders.
यतीनां वैष्णवानां च ब्रह्मर्षेर्ब्रह्मचारिणाम्
For ascetics, Vaishnavas, Brahmarshis, and celibates,
नो यावदुपनीयेत द्विजः शूद्रस्तथाऽङ्गना
Until a twice-born is initiated, as well as for Shudras and women,
शौचं क्षत्रविशोश्चैव द्विजानां गृहिणां समम्
The cleansing for Kshatriyas and Vaishyas is the same as for householders among the twice-born.
न्यूनाधिकं न कर्तव्यं शौचं शुद्धिमभीप्सता
One seeking purity should not perform cleansing in excess or deficiency.
शौचं तन्नियमं मत्तः सावधानं निशामय
Hear from me this rule of cleansing, to be observed carefully.
वल्मीकमूषिकोत्खातां मृदमन्तर्जलां तथा
Earth dug from an anthill or a rat's hole, or earth from within water,
अन्तःप्राण्यवपर्णां च हलोत्खातां विशेषतः
Earth from inside, from leaves fallen by living beings, and especially that dug by a plough.
अश्वत्थमूलान्नीतां च तथैव शयनोत्थिताम्
And likewise, earth brought from the root of the aśvattha tree, or earth upon which one has lain or risen, should be avoided.
शस्यस्थलानां क्षेत्राणामुद्यानानां मृदं त्यजेत् 1.26.
One should discard earth from threshing floors, fields, and gardens.
शौचहीनोऽशुचिर्नित्यमनर्हः सर्वकर्मसु
One who lacks purity is always impure and unfit for all actions.
आदौ षोडशगण्डूषैर्मुखशुद्धिं विधाय च
First, having purified the mouth with sixteen mouthfuls of water,
पुनः षोडशगण्डूषैर्मुखशुद्धिं समाचरेत्
Again, one should perform mouth purification with sixteen mouthfuls of water.
निरूपितं सामवेदे हरिणा चाह्निकक्रमे
This has been prescribed in the Sāmaveda by Hari in the daily sequence of duties.
खदिरं च शिरीषं च जातिपुन्नागशालकम्
Khadira, śirīṣa, jāti, punnāga, and śālaka are recommended.
जम्बूकं बकुलं तोक्मं पलाशं च प्रशस्तकम्
Jambū, bakula, tokma, and palāśa are also praised.
वृक्षं कण्टकयुक्तं च लतादि परिवर्जयेत्
One should avoid trees with thorns and creepers, and the like.
खर्जूरं नारिकेलं च तालं च परिवर्जयेत्
One should avoid kharjūra, coconut, and tāla trees.
शौचहीनोऽशुचि र्नित्यमनर्हः सर्वकर्मसु
One who lacks purity is always impure and unfit for all actions.
प्रक्षाल्य पादावाचम्य प्रातःसन्ध्यां समाचरेत् 1.26.
Having washed the feet and rinsed the mouth, one should perform the morning sandhyā.
स स्नातः सर्वतीर्थेषु त्रिसन्ध्यं यः समाचरेत्
He who bathes in all holy waters and performs the three sandhyās,
यदह्ना कुरुते कर्म न तस्य फलभाग्भवेत्
Whatever action he performs during the day, he does not obtain its fruit.
स शूद्रवद्बहिष्कार्य्यः सर्वस्माद्द्विजकर्मणः
He should be expelled from all duties of a twice-born, like a Śūdra.
ब्रह्महत्यामात्महत्यां प्रत्यहं लभते द्विजः
The twice-born incurs the sin of killing a Brāhmaṇa and of self-slaughter every day.
कल्पं व्रजेत्कालसूत्रं यथा हि वृषलीपतिः
He goes to the Kālasūtra hell for an age, just like the husband of a low-caste woman.
ब्रह्माणमीशं विष्णुं च मायां पद्मां सरस्वतीम्
Brahmā, Īśa, Viṣṇu, Māyā, Padmā, and Sarasvatī—
