सौम्यस्वामियुते लग्ने सौम्यग्रहविलोकिते । पापग्रहसमासक्तदुष्टदोषादिवर्जिते
With the ascendant joined to a benefic lord, observed by benefic planets, and free from the faults of malefic planets and other evils—
यशोदां बोधयामास कारयामास मङ्गलम् । वन्धूनाश्वासयामास समुत्थाय हरिः स्वयम्
Hari himself arose, awakened Yaśodā, performed auspicious rites, and comforted the relatives.
वाद्यं निषेधयामास राधिकाभयभीतवत् । स्वतन्त्रो विश्वकर्ता च पाता भर्ता स्वतन्त्रवत्
He ordered the music to stop, as if fearing for Rādhā’s safety; the independent Creator of the universe, the protector and sustainer, acted as if subject to another’s will.
प्रक्षाल्य पादयुगलं धृतवा धौते च वाससी । उवास संस्कृते स्थाने विलिप्ते चन्दनादिना
Having washed his pair of feet and put on clean garments, he sat in a purified place, anointed with sandalwood and other substances.
फलपल्लवसंयुक्तं संस्कृतं चन्दनादिभिः । वामे कृत्वा पूर्णकुम्भं वह्निं विप्रं स्वदक्षिणे
He placed to his left a full water-pot, fruits and fresh leaves, all prepared with sandalwood and the like; to his right, the fire and a brāhmaṇa.
पतिपुत्रवतीं दीपं दर्पणं पुरतस्तथा । दूर्वाकाण्डं च सुस्निग्धं पुष्पं धान्यं सितं शुभम्
He set before him a lamp, a mirror, a married woman with a son, tender dūrvā grass, auspicious flowers, and pure white grains.
गुरुदत्तं गुहीत्वा च प्रदधौ मस्तकोपरि । धृतं ददर्श माध्वीकं रजतं काञ्चनं दधि
Taking what had been given by his teacher, he placed it upon his head; he saw honey, silver, gold, and curds arranged.
चन्दनं लेपनं कृत्वा पुष्पमालां गले ददौ । गुरुवर्गं ब्राह्मणं च वन्दयामास भक्तितः
He applied sandalwood paste, placed a garland of flowers around his neck, and reverently saluted the teachers and the brāhmaṇa.
शङ्खध्वनिं वेदपाठं संगीतं मङ्गलाष्टकम् । विप्रशीर्वचनं रम्यं शुश्राव परमादरम्
He listened with utmost respect to the sound of the conch, the chanting of the Vedas, singing, auspicious verses, and the pleasing blessings of the brāhmaṇa.
ध्यात्वा मङ्गलरूपं च सर्वत्र मङ्गलप्रदम् । चिक्षेप दक्षिणां पादं सुन्दरं स्वात्मविग्रहम्
Meditating on the auspicious form, the bestower of good fortune everywhere, he extended his beautiful right foot, his own embodied self.
विधृत्य नासिकावामभागं मध्यमया विभुः । विसृज्य वायुं संपूर्णं नासादक्षिणरन्ध्रतः
Holding the left side of his nose with the middle finger, the Lord released a full breath through the right nostril.
ततो ययौ नन्दनन्दो नन्दस्य प्राङ्गणं वरम् । सानन्दः परमानन्दो नित्यानन्दः सनातनः
Then the delight of Nanda, filled with joy, eternal bliss, and everlasting happiness, went to the excellent courtyard of Nanda.
नित्योऽनित्यो नित्यबीचस्वरूपो नित्यविग्रहः । नित्याङ्गभूतो नित्येशो नित्यकृत्यविशारदः
He is eternal and non-eternal, of the nature of the eternal seed, possessing an eternal form, composed of eternal limbs, the eternal Lord, and skilled in eternal acts.
नित्यनूतनरूपश्च नित्यनूतनयौवनः । नित्यनूतनवेषश्च वयसा नित्यनूतनः
He is of ever-new form, ever-new youth, ever-new attire, and ever-new in age.
नित्यनूतनसंभाषो यत्प्रेम नित्यनूतनम् । नित्यनूतनसंप्राप्तिः सौभाग्यं नित्यनूतनम्
That love which is ever-fresh in conversation, ever-new in its feeling, ever-renewed in its attainment—such is the ever-fresh good fortune.
सुधारसपरं मिष्टं यत्वाक्यं नित्यनूतनम् । नित्यनूतनभक्तं च यत्पदं नित्यनूतनम्
That speech which is as sweet as the essence of nectar, ever-new in its delight; that devotion which is ever-fresh, and that abode which is ever-renewed.
स्थायं स्थायं प्राङ्गणेऽस्मिनमायेशो मायया युतः । अतीव रम्ये सुस्निग्धो बभूव गमनोन्मुखः
Again and again, in that courtyard, the Lord of Māyā, united with Māyā, became exceedingly charming, full of affection, and ready to depart.
रम्भास्तम्भसमूहैश्च रसालपल्लवान्वितैः । पट्टसूत्रनिबद्धैश्च सुन्दरैश्च सुसंस्कृतैः
With clusters of plantain pillars adorned with tender mango shoots, beautifully tied with silk threads and finely decorated.
पद्मरागेण खचिते रचिते विश्वकर्मणा । कस्तूरीकुङ्कुमाक्तैश्च चन्दनैश्च सुसंस्कृते
Inlaid with ruby gems, crafted by Viśvakarman, and adorned with musk, saffron, and well-prepared sandalwood.
तत्र तस्थौ स्वयं कृष्णः सहाक्रूरः सबान्धवः । यशोदया समाश्लिष्टो वामपार्श्वेन मायया
There stood Krishna himself, together with Akrura and his kin, embraced on his left side by Yashoda with affection.
नन्देनाऽऽनन्दयुक्तेनाऽऽश्लिष्टो दक्षिणपार्श्वतः । संभाषितो बान्धवैश्च पित्रा मात्रा च चुम्बितः
Embraced on his right side by Nanda, filled with joy, addressed by his relatives, and kissed by both his father and mother.
इति शीब्रह्मo महाo श्रीकृष्णजन्मखo उत्तo नारदनाo यात्रामङ्गलं नामैकसप्ततितमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the seventy-first chapter, called 'The Auspicious Journey of Narada,' in the great Brahmavaivarta Purana, in the section on the birth of Sri Krishna.
अथ द्विसप्ततितमोऽध्यायः नारायण उवाच अथ कृष्णो गुरुं नत्वा निर्गम्य शिबिरान्मुने । आरुह्य स्वर्गयानं च शुभां मधुपुरीं ययौ
Now, the seventy-second chapter. Narayana said: Then Krishna, having bowed to his teacher, departed from the camp, ascended the celestial chariot, and went to the auspicious city of Mathura.
विवेश मथुरां रम्यां सहाक्रूरगणैः समम् । निर्जित्य शक्रनगरी शोभायुक्तां मनोहराम्
He entered the beautiful Mathura together with Akrura and his companions, having conquered the splendid and enchanting city of Indra.
रत्नश्रेष्ठेन खचितां रचितां विश्वकर्मणा । अमूल्यरत्नकलशो राजितैश्च विराजनाम्
Adorned with the finest jewels, constructed by Viśvakarman, and resplendent with priceless jeweled vessels.
राजमर्गशतैरिष्टैर्वैष्टितां रुचिरैर्वरैः । चन्द्राकारैश्चन्द्रसारैर्मणिमिः परिसंस्कृतैः
Graced with hundreds of royal roads, beautiful and excellent, with moon-like, moon-essence, jewel-paved avenues.
विचित्रैर्मणिसारैश्च वीथीशतविनिर्मितैः । शोभितैर्वणिजैः श्रेष्ठैः पुण्यवस्तुसमन्वितैः
With varied jewel-lined streets, constructed in hundreds, adorned by the best merchants, filled with auspicious goods.
सरोवरसहस्रैश्च परितः परिशोभितम् । शुध्धस्फटिसंकाशैः पद्मरागविराजितैः
Surrounded on all sides by thousands of lakes, shining with the brilliance of pure crystal and adorned with rubies.
रत्नालंकारभूषाढ्यैः शोभितां पद्मिनीगणैः । स्यिरयौवनसंयुक्तैर्निमेषरहितैः परैः
Adorned with groups of lotuses, embellished with jeweled ornaments, endowed with perpetual youth, and free from even a moment's decline.
शाक्षरैरूर्ध्ववदनैः कृष्णदर्शनलालसैः । भ्रूभङ्गलीलालोलैश्च शश्वच्चञ्चललोचनैः
With upward-facing, letter-like forms, longing for the sight of Krishna, playful in the movement of their brows, and ever-restless in their glances.
