हतप्रजः प्रजालाभं प्रतिष्ठां चाप्रतिष्ठितः । यशः प्राप्नोति विपुलमयशस्वी च लीलया
One whose children have died attains offspring, and the unestablished becomes established; he gains abundant fame, and even the infamous is uplifted effortlessly.
अथ सुष्वाप समये परं संहृष्टमानसः । रम्ये चम्पकतल्पे च कृष्णं कृत्वा स्ववक्षसि
Then, at the proper time, with a mind filled with joy, he slept well on a beautiful campaka flower bed, placing Krishna upon his own chest.
प्रातरुथाय सहसा कृत्वाऽऽङ्निकमनुत्तमम् । स्वरथे स्थापयामास रामं कृष्णं जगत्पतिम्
Rising swiftly in the morning, performing the supreme ritual of purification, he placed Rama and Krishna, the Lord of the universe, upon his own chariot.
गव्यं पञ्चप्रकारं च नानाद्रव्यं सुदुल्रभम् । वृषभानं च नन्दं च सुनन्दं चन्दभानकम्
He gathered five kinds of cow products, various rare items, Vṛṣabhāna, Nanda, Sunanda, and Candabhāna.
नानाप्रकारं वाद्यं च मृदङ्गमुरजादिकम् । पटहं पणवं चैव ढक्कां दुंदुभिमानकम्
He assembled various musical instruments, such as mṛdaṅga, muraja, paṭaha, paṇava, ḍhakkā, duṃdubhi, and mānaka.
सज्जां संनहनीं कास्यपट्टमर्दलमण्डवीम् । वादयामास सानन्दं नन्दगोपो व्रजेश्वरः
He prepared the festive assembly, adorned with bronze plates and garlands, and Nanda, the lord of the cowherds, joyfully played the instruments in Vraja.
श्रुत्वा वाद्यं च गोप्यश्च गमनं रामकृष्णयोः । दृष्ट्वा कृष्णं रथस्थं तमाययुः कोपपीडिताः
Hearing the music and the news of Rama and Krishna's departure, the gopis, seeing Krishna upon the chariot, approached, distressed with anger.
कृष्णेन वारिताः सर्वाः प्रेरिता राधाया द्विजः । बभञ्जुरीश्वररथं पादाघातेन लीलया
All were restrained by Krishna and urged by Radha; the gopis, with playful blows of their feet, broke the chariot of the lord.
तत्र सर्वेषु गोपेश हाहाकारं कृतेषु च । प्रययुर्बलवत्यश्च कृष्णं कृत्वा स्ववक्षसि
When all the cowherds created a tumult, the powerful gopis approached Krishna, placing him upon their own chests.
काचित्क्रूरं तमक्रूरं भर्त्सयामास कोपतः । काश्चिद्वद्ध्वा च वस्त्रेण चाकूरं प्रययुस्ततः
Some, angered, rebuked cruel Akrura; others, tying him with cloth, drove him away.
काचित्तं ताडयामास कङ्कणेन करेण च । तद्वस्त्रं हारयामास कृत्वा विवसनं मुने
One struck him with a bracelet on her hand, and another, taking his garment, left him naked, O sage.
क्षतविक्षतसर्वाङ्गं दृष्ट्वाऽक्रूरं च माधवः । जगाम राधानिकटं बोधयामास तां पुनः
Seeing Akrura wounded and bruised all over, Madhava went to Radha's side and consoled her again.
आध्यात्मिकेन योगेन विनयेन च सादरम् । अक्रूरं बोधयामास वोधयामास तां पुनः
With spiritual yoga and respectful humility, he consoled Akrura and again comforted her.
आकाशात्पतितं दिव्यं सन्त्रप्रस्थापितं रथम् । विचित्रवस्त्रसंयुक्तं ददर्श पुरतो हरिः
Hari saw before him a divine chariot, sent from the sky, adorned with various garments and splendidly arranged.
खचितं मणिराजेन रचितं विश्वकर्मणा । तं दृष्ट्वा मातृभवनमाजगाम जगत्पतिः
Inlaid with a multitude of jewels and crafted by Viśvakarma, upon seeing it, the Lord of the universe proceeded to his mother's house.
भुक्त्वा पीत्वा सुखं सुप्त्वा भगवान्सहबान्धवः । तस्थौ मुनीन्द्रदेवेन्द्रब्रह्मेशशेषवन्दितः
Having eaten, drunk, and slept happily with his companions, the Blessed Lord remained, honored by the foremost sages, Indra, Brahma, and Śeṣa.
मुषुपुर्गोंपिकाः सर्वाः परं संहृष्टमानसाः । पुष्पतल्पे च रम्ये च राधया सह नारद
All the cowherd women, their hearts filled with great joy, reclined upon a beautiful bed of flowers together with Rādhā, O Nārada.
सर्वे चाऽऽनन्दयुक्ताश्च जना गोकुलवासिनः । केचिद्गोपाश्च ननृतुः केचित्संगीततत्पराः
All the people dwelling in Gokula were filled with happiness; some of the cowherds danced, while others devoted themselves to singing.
अथैकसप्ततितमोऽध्यायः नारायण उवाच राधिकायां च सुप्तायां सुप्तासु गोपिकासु । पुष्पचन्दनतल्पे च वायुना सुरभीकृते
Chapter Seventy-One. Nārāyaṇa said: As Rādhā slept, and the cowherd women also slept, upon a bed adorned with flowers and sandalwood, made fragrant by the wind—
तृतीयप्रहरेऽतीते निशायां च शुभे क्षणे । शुभचन्द्रर्क्षयोगे चामृतयोगसमन्विते
When the third watch of the night had passed, at an auspicious moment, under the favorable conjunction of the moon and stars, endowed with the nectar-bestowing yoga—
सौम्यस्वामियुते लग्ने सौम्यग्रहविलोकिते । पापग्रहसमासक्तदुष्टदोषादिवर्जिते
With the ascendant joined to a benefic lord, observed by benefic planets, and free from the faults of malefic planets and other evils—
यशोदां बोधयामास कारयामास मङ्गलम् । वन्धूनाश्वासयामास समुत्थाय हरिः स्वयम्
Hari himself arose, awakened Yaśodā, performed auspicious rites, and comforted the relatives.
वाद्यं निषेधयामास राधिकाभयभीतवत् । स्वतन्त्रो विश्वकर्ता च पाता भर्ता स्वतन्त्रवत्
He ordered the music to stop, as if fearing for Rādhā’s safety; the independent Creator of the universe, the protector and sustainer, acted as if subject to another’s will.
प्रक्षाल्य पादयुगलं धृतवा धौते च वाससी । उवास संस्कृते स्थाने विलिप्ते चन्दनादिना
Having washed his pair of feet and put on clean garments, he sat in a purified place, anointed with sandalwood and other substances.
फलपल्लवसंयुक्तं संस्कृतं चन्दनादिभिः । वामे कृत्वा पूर्णकुम्भं वह्निं विप्रं स्वदक्षिणे
He placed to his left a full water-pot, fruits and fresh leaves, all prepared with sandalwood and the like; to his right, the fire and a brāhmaṇa.
पतिपुत्रवतीं दीपं दर्पणं पुरतस्तथा । दूर्वाकाण्डं च सुस्निग्धं पुष्पं धान्यं सितं शुभम्
He set before him a lamp, a mirror, a married woman with a son, tender dūrvā grass, auspicious flowers, and pure white grains.
गुरुदत्तं गुहीत्वा च प्रदधौ मस्तकोपरि । धृतं ददर्श माध्वीकं रजतं काञ्चनं दधि
Taking what had been given by his teacher, he placed it upon his head; he saw honey, silver, gold, and curds arranged.
चन्दनं लेपनं कृत्वा पुष्पमालां गले ददौ । गुरुवर्गं ब्राह्मणं च वन्दयामास भक्तितः
He applied sandalwood paste, placed a garland of flowers around his neck, and reverently saluted the teachers and the brāhmaṇa.
शङ्खध्वनिं वेदपाठं संगीतं मङ्गलाष्टकम् । विप्रशीर्वचनं रम्यं शुश्राव परमादरम्
He listened with utmost respect to the sound of the conch, the chanting of the Vedas, singing, auspicious verses, and the pleasing blessings of the brāhmaṇa.
ध्यात्वा मङ्गलरूपं च सर्वत्र मङ्गलप्रदम् । चिक्षेप दक्षिणां पादं सुन्दरं स्वात्मविग्रहम्
Meditating on the auspicious form, the bestower of good fortune everywhere, he extended his beautiful right foot, his own embodied self.
