नक्तं दीपशिखेवाहं त्वया सार्धं त्वया विना । दिने दिने यथा क्षीणा कृष्णपक्षे विधोः कला
At night I am like a lamp-flame with you, but without you, I dwindle day by day, like the waning phases of the moon during the dark fortnight.'
तव वक्षसि मे दीप्तिः पूर्णंचन्द्रप्रभासमा । सद्यो मृता त्वया त्यक्ता कुह्वां चन्द्रकला यथा
My radiance upon your chest is like the full splendor of the moon; abandoned by you, I die instantly, like the darkened lunar phase on the new moon night.'
ज्वलदग्निशिखेवाहं घृताहुत्या त्वया सह । त्वया विनाऽहं निर्वाणा शिशिरे पद्मिनी यथा
With you, I am like a blazing flame fed by ghee; without you, I am extinguished, like a lotus in the cold season.'
चिन्ताज्वरजराग्रस्ता मत्तस्त्वयि गतेऽप्यहम् । अस्तंगते रवौ चन्द्रे ध्वान्दग्रस्ता धरा यथा
Afflicted by the fever of anxiety and old age, I am distraught when you depart, as the earth is shrouded in darkness when the sun and moon have set.'
भ्रष्टो वेषस्त्वां विना मे रुपयौवनचेतनम् । तारावली परिभ्रष्टा सूर्यसूतोदये यथा
Without you, my beauty, youth, and consciousness are lost, like a cluster of stars vanishing at sunrise.'
त्वमेवाऽऽत्मा च सर्वेषां मम नाथो विशेषतः । तनुर्यथाऽऽत्मना त्यक्ता तथाऽहं च त्वया विना
You alone are the soul of all, and especially my Lord; just as the body is lifeless without the soul, so am I without you.'
पञ्चप्राणात्मकस्त्वं मे मृताऽहं च त्वया विना । दृष्टेश्च गोलकौ जद्वद्दृष्टिः पुत्तलिकां विना
You are my five vital airs; without you, I am dead, like the sight in an eye is gone when the eyeball is lost, as in a doll.'
स्थलं यथा चित्रयुक्तं त्वया सार्धमहं तथा । असंस्कृता त्वया हीना तृणाच्छन्ना यथा मही
With you, I am like a land adorned with paintings; without you, I am unrefined, like earth covered with grass.'
त्वया सार्धमहं कृष्ण चित्रयुक्तेव मृन्मयी । त्वां विना जलधौताऽहं विरूपा मृन्मयीव च
With you, Kṛṣṇa, I am like a painted clay figure; without you, washed by water, I am misshapen, like a clay figure.'
गोपाङ्गनानां शोभा च त्वया रासेश्वरेण च । हारे स्वर्णविकारे च श्वेतेन मणिना सह
The beauty of the cowherd women is with you, Lord of the rāsa, just as a golden necklace is adorned with a white jewel.'
व्रजराज त्वया सार्ध राजन्ते राजराजयः । यथा चन्द्रेण नभसि ताराराजिर्विराजते
With you, King of Vraja, the kings shine among kings, just as a row of stars shines in the sky with the moon.'
त्वया शोभा यशोदाया नन्दस्य नन्दनन्दन । यथा शाखाफलस्कन्धैस्तरुराजिर्विराजते
With you, O son of Nanda, Yaśodā's beauty shines, just as a row of trees is splendid with branches, fruits, and trunks.'
त्वया कार्ध गोकुलेश सोभा गोकुलवासिनाम् । यथा सर्वा लोकराजी राजेन्द्रेण विराजते
With you, Lord of Gokula, the beauty of the people of Gokula shines, just as all the realms of the world shine with the presence of a great king.'
रामस्यापि च रासेश त्वया शोभा मनोहरा । राजते देवराजेन यथा स्वर्गेऽमरावती
Even Rāma's beauty, O Lord of the rāsa, is enchanting with you, just as Amarāvatī shines in heaven with the king of the gods.'
वृन्दावनस्य वृक्षाणां त्वं च शोभा पतिर्गतिः । अन्योषां च वनानां च बलवान्केसरी यथा
You are the beauty, lord, and refuge of the trees of Vṛndāvana, just as the lion is the strength of other animals and forests.'
त्वया विना यशोदा य निमग्ना शोकसागरे । अप्राप्य वत्सं मुरभिः क्रोशन्ती व्याकुला यथा
Without you, Yaśodā is plunged in an ocean of sorrow, like a cow bereft of her calf, crying out in distress, tormented by Mura's men.
आन्दोलयन्ति नन्दस्य प्राणा दग्धं च मानसम् । त्वया विना तप्तपात्रे यथा धान्यसमूहकः
Nanda's life is shaken, his mind scorched, as grain heaped in a heated vessel burns—so is he tormented in your absence.
इत्युक्त्वा परमप्रेम्णा सा पतन्ती हरेः पदे । पुनराध्यात्मिकेनैव बोधयामास तां विभुः
Having spoken thus, with supreme love, she fell at the feet of Hari; then the Lord instructed her again with spiritual wisdom.
आध्यात्मिको महायोगी मोहसंछेदकारणम् । यथा पर्शुश्च वृक्षाणां तीक्ष्णधारश्च नारद
The supreme yogic knowledge, O Nārada, is the means to cut through delusion, just as an axe with a sharp edge fells trees.
नारद उवाच आध्यात्मिकं महायोगं वद वेदविदां वर । शोकच्छेदं च लोकानां श्रोतुं कौतुहलं मम
Nārada said: O best knower of the Vedas, tell me of that supreme yogic knowledge, the destroyer of sorrow for all beings; I am eager to hear.
नारायण उवाच आध्यात्मिको महायोगो न ज्ञातो योगिनामवि । स च नानाप्रकारश्च सर्वं वेत्ति हरिः स्वयम्
Nārāyaṇa said: The supreme yogic knowledge is not known even to the yogis; it has many forms, and Hari himself knows them all.
किंचिदाध्यात्मिकं चैव गोनोके राधिकेश्वरः । सुप्रीतः कथायामास त्रिपुरारिं यथा मुने
In Goloka, the Lord of Rādhā, pleased, narrated some of this spiritual wisdom, O sage, just as he once told Tripurāri.
सहस्रेन्द्रनिपातान्तं तपः कुर्वन्तमीश्वरम् । श्रेष्ठं ज्येष्ठं वैष्णवानां वरिष्ठं च तपस्विनाम्
He saw the Lord, the foremost and eldest among the Vaiṣṇavas, the best of ascetics, performing austerities until the fall of a thousand Indras.
पुष्करे दुष्करं तप्त्वा पाद्मे पाद्मं च पद्मजः । दृष्ट्वा तं सादरं कृष्ण उवाच किंचिदेवतम्
Having performed severe austerities at Puṣkara, and the Padma at Padma, the lotus-born beheld him with reverence, and Kṛṣṇa spoke a little to the god.
शतेन्द्रपातपर्यन्तं कठोरेण कृशोदरम् । निश्चेष्टमस्थिसारं च कृपया च कृपानिधिः
With a body emaciated by harsh austerities lasting as long as a hundred Indras, motionless, reduced to skin and bones, the ocean of mercy spoke out of compassion.
सिंहक्षेत्रे पुरा धर्मं मत्तातं धर्मिणां वरम् । चतुर्दशेन्द्रावच्छिन्नं तपस्तप्त्वा कृशोदरम्
In ancient times, in the lion's field, the best among the righteous, my father, performed austerities, emaciated, for a period marked by fourteen Indras.
पपाठाऽऽयात्मिकं किंचित्कृपया च कृपानिधिः । किचिच्छतेन्द्रावच्छिन्नं मां तपन्तमुवाच सः
The ocean of mercy recited some spiritual wisdom, and seeing me performing austerities for a period marked by a hundred Indras, he spoke to me.
किंचित्सनत्कुमारं च तपन्तं सुचिरं परम् । सुतपन्तमनन्तं च किंचिच्चोवाच नारद
He spoke a little to Sanatkumāra, who was engaged in long and supreme austerities, and also to Ananta, who was performing great penance, O Nārada.
चिरं तपन्तं कपिलं हिमशैले तपस्विनम् । पुष्करे भास्करे किंचित्तपन्तं दुष्करं तपः
He spoke a little to Kapila, the ascetic performing austerities for a long time on the snowy mountain, and to Bhāskara at Puṣkara, undertaking severe penance.
उवाच किंचित्प्रह्लादं किंचिद्दुर्वाससं भृगुम् । एवं निगूढं भक्तं च कृप्या भक्तवत्सलः
He spoke a little to Prahlāda, to Durvāsas, and to Bhṛgu; thus, out of compassion, the Lord, who loves his devotees, addressed his hidden devotee.
