वसुदेववचः श्रुत्वा रक्तपङ्कचलोचनः । खड्गं गृहीत्वा तं हन्तुं प्रययौ नृपतीश्वरः
Hearing Vasudeva's words, his eyes reddened with anger; the king took up his sword and went to kill him.
हाहेति कृत्वा पुत्रं च वारयामास तत्क्षणम् । उग्रसेनो महाराजमतीव बलवान्मुने
Crying out 'Alas!' he restrained his son at that moment; Ugrasena, the mighty king, stopped him, O sage.
स्वपीठाद्वसुदेवश्च कोपाविष्टो गृहं ययौ । अक्रूरं प्रेरयामास गन्तुं नन्दव्रजं नृपः
Vasudeva, filled with anger, left his seat and went home; the king sent Akrura to go to Nanda's village.
दूतान्प्रस्थापयामास शीघ्रं प्रतिदिशं तथा । आययुर्मुनयः सर्वे नृपश्च सपरिच्छदा
He dispatched messengers quickly in every direction; all the sages arrived, and the king with his retinue.
दिक्पालाश्च सुराः सर्वे ब्राह्मणाश्च तपस्विनः । सनकश्च सनन्दश्च वोढुः पञ्चशिखस्तथा
All the guardians of the directions, the gods, the Brahmins, and ascetics came; Sanaka, Sananda, Vodhu, and Panchashikha as well.
सनत्कुमारो भगवान्प्रज्वलन्ब्रह्मतेजसा । कपिलश्चासुरिः पैलः सुमन्तुश्च सनातनः
The illustrious Sanatkumara, blazing with Brahmanic radiance, Kapila, Asuri, Paila, Sumantu, and Sanatana came.
पुलहश्च पुलस्त्यश्च भृसुश्च क्रतुरङ्गिराः । मरीचिः कश्यपश्चैव दक्षोऽत्रिश्च्यवनस्तथा
Pulaha, Pulastya, Bhrigu, Kratu, Angiras, Marichi, Kashyapa, Daksha, Atri, and Chyavana also arrived.
भरद्वाजश्च व्यासश्च गौतमश्च पराशरः । प्रचेताश्च वसिष्ठश्च संवर्तश्च बृहस्पतिः
Bharadvaja, Vyasa, Gautama, Parashara, Prachetas, Vasishta, Samvarta, and Brihaspati came as well.
कात्यायनो याज्ञवल्क्योऽप्युत्तङ्कः सौभरिस्तथा । पर्वतो देवलश्चैव जैगीषव्यश्च जैमिनिः
Katyayana, Yajnavalkya, Uttanka, Saubhari, Parvata, Devala, Jaigishavya, and Jaimini also arrived.
विश्वामित्रश्च सुतपाः पिप्पलः शाकटायनः । जाबालिर्जाङ्गलिश्चैव पिशलिश्च शिलालिकः
Vishvamitra, Sutapa, Pippala, Shakatayana, Jabali, Jangali, Pishali, and Shilalika came.
आस्तौकश्च जगत्कारुस्तथा कल्याणमित्रकः । दुर्वासा वामदेवश्च ऋष्यश्रृङ्गो विभाण्डकः
Astauka, the creator of the world, Kalyanamitraka, Durvasa, Vamadeva, Rishyashringa, and Vibhandaka arrived.
पथिः कविः कणादश्च गौशिकः पाणिनिस्तथा । कौत्सोऽद्यमर्षणश्चैव वाल्मीकिर्लोमहर्षणः
Pathi, Kavi, Kanada, Gaushika, Panini, Kautsa, Adyamarsana, Valmiki, and Lomaharshana came.
मार्कणडेयो मृकण्डुश्च पर्शुरामश्च सांकृतिः । अगस्त्यश्च तथा वान्तस्तथाऽन्ये मुनयो मुने
Markandeya, Mrikandu, Parashurama, Sankriti, Agastya, Vanta, and other sages, O sage, arrived.
सशिष्याश्च सपुत्राश्च ब्राह्मणाश्च तपस्विनः । जरासंधो दन्तवक्रो दाम्भिको द्रविडाधिपः
With their disciples and sons, the Brahmins and ascetics came; Jarasandha, Dantavakra, Dambhika, and the lord of the Dravidas arrived.
शिशुपालो भीष्मकश्च भगदत्तश्च मुद्गलः । धार्तराष्ट्रो धूमकेशो धूम्रकेतुश्च शम्बरः
Shishupala, Bhishmaka, Bhagadatta, Mudgala, Dhritarashtra, Dhumakesha, Dhumraketu, and Shambara came.
शल्यः सत्राजितः शङ्कुर्नृपाश्चान्ये महाबलाः । भीष्मो द्रोणः कृपाचार्यो ह्यश्वत्थामा महाबलाः
Shalya, Satrajita, Shankur, and other mighty kings; Bhishma, Drona, Kripacharya, and Ashvatthama, all great warriors, arrived.
भूरिश्रवाश्च शाल्वश्च कैकेयः कौशलस्तथा । सर्वान्संभाषयामास महाराजो यथोचितम् सत्यको यज्ञदिवसे चकार च शुभक्षणम्
Bhūriśravā, Śālva, Kaikeya, and Kauśala as well—the great king addressed them all appropriately. On the day of the sacrifice, Satyaka performed the auspicious rite.
इति श्रीब्रह्मo महाo श्रीकृष्णजन्मखo उत्तo नारदनाo कंसयज्ञ- कथानं नाम चतुःषष्टितमोध्यायः
Thus ends the sixty-fourth chapter, entitled 'The Story of Kaṃsa's Sacrifice,' in the glorious Brahmavaivarta Purāṇa, in the section concerning the birth of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, as narrated by Nārada.
अथ पञ्चषष्टितमोऽध्यायः नारायम उवाच कंसस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा सोऽक्रूरो धर्मिणां वरः । उवाच चौद्धवं शान्तं शान्तः प्रहृष्टमानसः
Now begins the sixty-fifth chapter. Nārāyaṇa said: Hearing the words of Kaṃsa, Akrūra, foremost among the righteous, spoke to the peaceful Uddhava, his own mind serene and delighted.
अक्रूर उवाच सुप्रभाताऽद्य रजनी बभूव मे शुभं दिनम् । तुष्टाश्च गुरवो विब्रा देवा मामिति निश्चितम्
Akrūra said: This night has passed most auspiciously for me; today is a blessed day. My teachers are pleased, the gods favor me—this is certain.
कोटिजन्मार्जितं पुण्यं मम स्वयमुपस्थितम् । बभूव मे समुत्पन्नं यद्यत्कर्म शुभाशुभम्
The merit I have accumulated over millions of births has come to fruition for me; whatever actions, good or bad, I have performed, have now borne fruit.
चिच्छेद बन्धनिगडं मम बद्धस्य कर्मणा । कारागाराश्च संसारान्मुक्तो यामि हरेःपदम्
The shackles of bondage, forged by my own deeds, have been cut; freed from the prison of worldly existence, I go to the feet of Hari.
सुहृदर्थो कृतोऽहं च कंसेन विदुषा रुषा । वरेण तुल्यो देवस्य क्रोधो मम बभूव ह
By the wise but angry Kaṃsa, I have been made an instrument for his own purpose; the wrath of the god has become equal to a boon for me.
व्रजराज समाहर्तुं व्रजं यास्यामि सांप्रतम् । द्रक्ष्यामि परमं पूज्यं भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदायिनम्
Now I shall go to Vraja to bring the king of Vraja; I will see the Supreme, the most worshipful, the giver of enjoyment and liberation.
नवीनजलदश्यामं नीलेन्दीवरनोचनम् । पीतवस्त्रसमायुक्तकटिदेशविराजितम्
I will behold him, dark as a fresh raincloud, with eyes like blue lotuses, adorned with yellow garments, his waist splendidly decorated.
धूलिधूसरिताङ्गं च किंवा चन्दनचर्चितम् । अथाव नवनीताक्तमङ्गं द्रक्ष्यामि सस्मितम्
I may see his body dusted with earth, or perhaps anointed with sandal paste; or else, his limbs smeared with fresh butter, smiling gently.
किंवा विनोदमुरलीं वादयन्तं मनोहरम् । किंवा गवां समूहं च चारजन्तमितस्ततः
Or perhaps, charmingly playing his delightful flute, or tending the herds of cows as they wander here and there.
किंवा वसन्तं गच्छन्तं शयानं वा सुनिश्चितम् । निद्रेशं कीदृशं चाद्य सुदृष्ट्वा च शुभे क्षणो
Or perhaps I will see him walking, or certainly lying down in rest; what kind of sleep he enjoys today, in this auspicious moment, I shall see.
यत्पादपद्मं ध्यायन्ते ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवादयः । न हि जानाति यस्यान्तमनन्तोऽनन्तविग्रहः
The lotus feet upon which Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, and others meditate—whose end is not known even by the infinite, whose forms are endless.
यत्प्रभावं न जानन्ति देवाः सन्तश्च संततम् । स्य स्तोत्रे जडीभूता भीता देवी सरस्वती
Whose power even the gods and the wise do not know; in whose praise the goddess Sarasvatī herself becomes mute and fearful.
