तुष्टाव शंकरं सूर्यो लज्जितोऽपि भयेन च । कृत्वा तमाशिषं तुष्टो ययौ गेहं कृपानिधिः
The Sun, though ashamed and fearful, praised Shankara; receiving his blessing, the compassionate one joyfully returned home.
विभुर्गरुत्मतो दर्पं बभञ्ज लीलया पुरा । निःश्वासैः प्रेरितस्यापि शिवस्य वृषभस्य च
The Lord once broke Garuda's pride playfully, even though he was propelled by the breaths of Shiva and Shiva's bull.
आगच्छन्तं च वैकुण्ठं पृष्ठे कृत्वा शिवं पुरा । द्रष्टुं समागतं भक्त्या देवं नारायणं परम्
Once, as Shiva was placed behind, he came to Vaikuntha to see the supreme deity Narayana, gathered there in devotion.
वह्निर्दपीं भृगोः शापात्सर्वभक्षो बभूव ह । गुरोः स्वभार्याहिरणाद्दर्पश्चूर्णो बभूव ह
Agni, due to Bhrigu's curse, became all-consuming; the pride of Hiranyadha, the guru's own wife, was crushed.

शिशुपालो हि निहतः कृष्णबाणेन लीलया । दन्तवक्रश्च सहसा परिपूर्णेऽत्र जन्मनि
Shishupala was slain by Krishna's arrow, playfully; Dantavakra too, suddenly, at the completion of this birth.
सुराणां दर्पभङ्गं च दैत्यद्वारा चकार ह । असुराणां सुरद्वारा विरोधेन परस्परम्
He broke the pride of the gods through the demons; and of the demons through the gods, by mutual conflict.
विधिद्वारा दर्पभङ्गं भवतश्च चकार सः । भवानासीन्नारदश्च पुरा पुत्रः प्रजापतेः
Through Brahma’s agency, he humbled your pride; formerly, you and Narada were sons of the progenitor.

मम साध्यं विश्वमिति कामदर्पो बभूव ह । तं प्रमतं हरद्वारा भस्मसाच्च चकार सः
Thinking, 'I am able to accomplish the whole universe,' he became intoxicated with desire; Shiva, through his own means, reduced that arrogant one to ashes.
पुनः कृत्वा प्रसादं तं जीवयामास लीलया । ऐकान्तिकं च तद्भक्तं स च नास्त्रं करोति हि
Then, restoring him by his favor, Shiva revived him playfully; that devotee became exclusively devoted and no longer performed any weapons.
चकार दर्पभङ्गं च दर्पिणो लक्ष्मणस्य च । रणे शंकरशूलेन रावणप्रेरितेन च
He broke the pride of the arrogant Lakshmana in battle with Shiva’s trident, which was sent by Ravana.
पुनस्तं जीवयामास रामस्य स्तवनेन च । स्वयं विस्मृतविष्णोश्च ब्रह्मशापेन नारद
Again, he revived him through Rama’s praise; Narada, by Brahma’s curse, forgot Vishnu himself.
चकार दर्पभङ्गं च कार्तवीर्यार्जुनस्य च । जामदग्न्यस्य शस्त्रेणामोघेन पर्शुना पुरा
He broke the pride of Kartavirya Arjuna with the unfailing axe of Jamadagni’s son, Parashurama, in ancient times.
विप्रपुत्रस्य मरणे हरणे कृष्णयोषिताम् । कर्णेन सार्धं समरे पार्थदर्पं बभञ्ज सः
At the death of the Brahmin’s son and the abduction of Krishna’s women, together with Karna in battle, he shattered Arjuna’s pride.
बाणस्य चोषाहरणे चिच्छेद च भुजान्विभुः । भृगोश्च दक्षयज्ञे च दर्पभङ्गं चकार सः
In the abduction of Usha by Banasura, the Lord cut off Banasura’s arms; and at Daksha’s sacrifice, he humbled the pride of Bhrigu.
पर्शुरामस्य रामस्य विवाहो पथि गच्छतः । बभञ्ज दर्पं समरे रामद्वारा पुरा विभुः
On the path to the marriage of Parashurama and Rama, the Lord broke Parashurama’s pride in battle through Rama.
सुमेरोः शृङ्गभृङ्गं च वायुद्वारा चकार सः । समुद्राणां दर्पभङ्गं चकारागस्त्यभक्षणात्
He broke the peak of Mount Sumeru through the agency of the wind; and humbled the pride of the oceans by Agastya’s consumption.
अकाले सृष्टिहरणे तत्पुत्रमरणे पुरा । कोपयुक्तस्य वायोश्च दर्पभङ्गं चकार सः
At the improper destruction of creation and the death of his son in ancient times, he humbled the pride of the wrathful wind.
उषाहरणयात्रायां द्वारकागमने हरेः । बाणस्य च गवां हेतोवंरुणं च शशाप सः

In the quarrel with Ganga and Vani before Narayana, he abandoned Sarasvati and broke her pride.
दर्पयुक्तां च दुर्गां च त्यक्त्वा शंभुर्हिमालये । कामं च भस्मसात्कृत्वा तपसे च ययौ विभुः
Having abandoned Durga, who was filled with pride, Shiva went to the Himalayas; he reduced Kama to ashes and departed for austerity.
लज्जामवाप सा देवी तस्या दर्पं बभञ्ज सः । सा ययौ तपसे विष्णोः प्राप्तिहेतोः शिवस्य च
That goddess attained modesty, and he broke her pride; she went to perform austerity for Vishnu and to obtain Shiva.
भारते सुचिरं तप्त्वा देवी वीष्णोर्वरेण च । चकार स्वामिनं शंभुं भगवन्तं सनातनम्
Having performed austerities for a long time in Bharata, the goddess, by Vishnu’s boon, made Shiva her eternal master.
महासौभाग्ययुक्ता सा बभूव शंकरप्रिया । विश्वेषु सर्वदेवीषु पूज्या वन्द्या स्तुता सुरैः
Endowed with great fortune, she became beloved to Shiva; among all goddesses in the universe, she is worshipped, praised, and honored by the gods.
दर्पयुक्ता महालक्ष्मीर्बभूव सा महामुने । पराभूता पुरा देवी जयेन विजयेन च
Filled with pride, Mahālakṣmī became thus, O great sage; formerly, the goddess had been defeated by Jaya and Vijaya.
प्रविशन्तीं विभोर्द्वारं दत्तवा भक्ताय वाञ्छितम् । निवारिता सा द्वाराच्च तेन दौवारिकेण वै
As she was entering the Lord's doorway, having granted the devotee his desire, she was stopped at the door by that gatekeeper.
