मनसोवाच भद्राभद्रं दैवसाध्यं करिष्यामि यथोचितम्
She spoke in her mind: 'I will accomplish what is auspicious or inauspicious, as is destined by fate.'
तं शत्रुं संहरिष्यामि लीलया समरस्थले
'I will destroy that enemy with ease on the battlefield.'
यदि ब्रह्मादयो देवाः समायान्ति रणस्थले 4.51.
'Even if Brahmā and the other gods come to the field of battle—'
गुरुर्मे भगवाञ्छेषः सिद्धमन्त्रं च दत्तवान्
'My revered teacher is the blessed Śeṣa, who has given me a perfected mantra.'
बिभर्मि कवचं कण्ठे परं त्रैलोक्यमङ्गलम्
'I wear at my neck a protective amulet, supremely auspicious for the three worlds.'
शिष्याऽहं मंत्रशास्त्रेषु शंभोर्भगवतः पुरा
'I am a disciple in the mantra scriptures of the blessed Śambhu from of old.'
शंभोश्च शिष्यो गरुडो गणयामि न तं ध्रुवम्
'And Garuḍa is a disciple of Śambhu as well, but I do not count him as such, certainly.'
इत्युक्त्वा सा जगामैका त्यक्त्वा नागगणान्रुषा
Having spoken thus, she departed alone, abandoning the hosts of nāgas in anger.
यत्र धन्वन्तरिर्देवः प्रसन्नवदनेक्षणः
Where Dhanvantari, the god, with a gracious and radiant face,
दृष्टिमात्रेण सर्वाश्च जीवयामास सुन्दरी
By merely his gaze, revived all the beautiful ones.
धन्वन्तरिस्तु भगवान्मन्त्रशास्त्रविशारदः
Dhanvantari, the blessed one, expert in the science of mantras,
दृष्ट्वा धन्वंतरिं देवी प्रहस्योवाच सत्वरम्
Seeing Dhanvantari, the goddess smiled and spoke swiftly,
मनसोवाच वद जानासि किं सिद्ध शिष्योऽसि गरुडस्य च ।। 4.51.
She spoke in her mind: Tell me, do you know, are you a siddha or a disciple of Garuda?
अहं च वैनतेयश्च शिष्यौ शंभोश्च विश्रुतौ
I and Vainateya are renowned as disciples of Shambhu.
इत्युक्त्वा सरसः पद्मं समानीय जगत्प्रसूः
Having spoken thus, the mother of the world brought a lotus from the lake.
दृष्ट्वाऽऽगतं पद्मपुष्पं ज्वलदग्निशिखोपमम्
Seeing the lotus flower brought, blazing like a flame of fire,
तच्च धन्वतरिर्दृष्ट्वा समंत्ररेणुमुष्टिना
Dhanvantari, seeing it, with a fist and mantra, took it.
देवी जग्राह शक्तिं च ग्रीष्मसूर्यसमप्रभाम्
The goddess took up a spear, shining like the summer sun.
दृष्ट्वा जाज्वल्यमानां तां शक्तिं धन्वतरिः स्वयम्
Seeing that spear blazing, Dhanvantari himself,
तां च शक्तिं वृथा दृष्ट्वा प्रजज्वालेश्वरी रुषा
Seeing that spear rendered ineffective, the goddess blazed with anger.
नागलक्षसमायुक्तं सिद्धमन्त्रेण मन्त्रितम्
With a mantra perfected for the Nāga-lakṣa, it was enchanted.
धन्वतरिर्नागपाशं दृष्ट्वा च सस्मितो मुदा
Dhanvantari, seeing the nāga-snare, smiled with delight.
सर्पास्त्रमागतं दृष्ट्वा गरुडो हरिवाहनः 4.51.
Seeing the serpent weapon arrive, Garuda, the carrier of Hari,
नागास्त्रं निष्फलं दृष्ट्वा कोपरक्तेक्षणा भृशम्
Seeing the serpent weapon rendered fruitless, with eyes red from anger, intensely,
भस्ममुष्टिं मन्त्रपूतां दृष्ट्वा च प्रेरितां यथा
Seeing the fistful of ashes, purified by mantra, sent forth as before,
निरस्तां भस्ममुष्टिं च दृष्ट्वा देवी चुकोप ह
Seeing the fistful of ashes repelled, the goddess became enraged.
शिवदत्तं च शूलं च शतसूर्यसमप्रभम्
And the trident given by Shiva, shining with the brilliance of a hundred suns.
अथ ब्रह्मा तथा शंभुराजगाम रणाजिरम्
Then Brahma and likewise Shambhu came to the battlefield.
दृष्ट्वा शंभुं जगद्गौरी विधिं च जगतां पतिम्
Seeing Shambhu, the mother of the world, and Vidhi, the lord of beings,
धन्वन्तरिश्च गरुडः प्रणनाम सुरेश्वरौ
Dhanvantari and Garuda bowed to the lords of the gods.
