वयसाऽतिशिशुर्बुद्ध्या ज्ञानवृद्ध्या विचक्षणः
Though very young in age, he was wise with the maturity of knowledge and discernment.
इंद्रद्वारे समुत्तिष्ठन्द्वारपालमुवाच ह
Approaching Indra’s gate, he rose up and spoke to the gatekeeper.
इत्येवं वचनं श्रुत्वा द्वारि ज्ञानं चकार तम्
Hearing these words, the doorkeeper recognized him at the entrance.
बालकानां बालिकानां समूहैः परिवेष्टितम् 4.47.
He was surrounded by groups of boys and girls.
प्रणनाम हरिर्भक्त्या तं हरिं शिशुरूपिणम्
Hari, with devotion, bowed to that Hari who had taken the form of a child.
मधुपर्कादिकं दत्त्वा शक्रः पूजां चकार तम्
Offering madhuparka and other gifts, Indra performed worship for him.
इंद्रस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा तमुवाच द्विजार्भकः
Hearing Indra’s words, the young brahmin boy replied to him.
कतिवर्षं च निर्माणे भवान्संकल्पितो यथा
For how many years and in what manner were you conceived in this creation?
एवंभूतं च निर्माणं न केनैंद्रेण निर्मितम्
Such a creation as this has not been made by any Indra.
बालकस्य वचः श्रुत्वा जहास स सुरेश्वरः
Hearing the boy’s words, the lord of the gods laughed.
कतींद्राणां समूहश्च त्वया दृष्टः श्रुतोऽथवा
How many groups of Indras have you seen or heard of?
शक्रस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रहस्य विप्रबालकः
Hearing Śakra’s words, the young brahmin laughed.
जानामि कश्यपं तात तव तातं प्रजापतिम् 4.47.
Dear one, I know Kaśyapa, your father, the lord of creatures.
पिपीलिकासमूहं च व्यायतं धनुषां शतम् 4.47.
A hundred bows, stretched out, matched the length of an army of ants.
ब्राह्मण उवाच 4.47.
The brāhmaṇa spoke.
कर्मणा स्वाङ्गहीनश्च स्वाङ्गवृद्धश्च कर्मणा
By action, one may be deprived of his own limbs, and by action, one’s limbs may be enhanced.
सुखदं पुण्यदं सारं नरकार्णवतारकम् 4.47.
It brings happiness, merit, and essence, and delivers from the ocean of hell.
कटं कथं मस्तके ते लोमचक्रं च वक्षसि ।। 4.47.
Why is there a scar on your head and a circle of hair on your chest?
दुर्लभं श्रीहरेर्दास्यं भक्तिर्मुक्तिर्गरीयसी 4.47.
Service to Lord Hari is rare; devotion is greater than liberation.
विश्वकर्माणमानीय प्रियमुक्त्वा शतक्रतुः
Having summoned Viśvakarman, Śatakratu spoke affectionately to him.
इत्येवं कथितं सर्वं शक्रदर्पविमोचनम् 4.47.
Thus, everything concerning the removal of Indra's pride has been recounted.
श्रीराधिकोवाच दर्पभङगं रवेश्चापि श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः
Śrī Rādhikā said: I wish to hear, in truth, about the breaking of the Sun's pride.
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच माली सुमाली दैत्येन्द्रौ दीप्तिं कर्तुं समुद्यतौ
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: Mālī and Sumālī, lords of the Daityas, endeavored to display their brilliance.
महासंपन्मदोन्मत्तौ शंकरस्य वरेण च
Intoxicated by great wealth and pride, and empowered by Śaṃkara's boon,
रुष्टः सूर्यः स्वशूलेन तौ जघानावलीलया
The angry Sun, with his own spear, effortlessly struck them down.
भक्तापायं च विज्ञाय शंकरो भक्तवत्सलः
Śaṃkara, ever affectionate to his devotees, understood the danger to his devotees.
तौ च नत्वा शिवं भक्त्या जग्मतुर्निजमन्दिरम्
Those two, bowing to Śiva with devotion, returned to their own abode.
दृष्ट्वा संहारकर्तारं जिघांसन्तं हरं रविः
Seeing Hara, the destroyer, intent on killing, the Sun fled.
दुद्राव च महादेवो ब्रह्मणो निलयं रुषा
The great god, enraged, ran to the abode of Brahmā.
दृष्ट्वा ब्रह्मा हरं रुष्टं तुष्टाव परमेश्वरम्
Seeing Hara angry, Brahmā praised the supreme lord.
