चकार भस्मसात्तां च हुंकारेणैव लीलया
She reduced her to ashes with a mere utterance of ‘huṃ,’ effortlessly.
ददर्श च्छिन्नभग्नां च शत्रुणा वचनाद्गुरोः
He saw her, broken and shattered by the enemy, as his teacher had said.
प्रणम्य च गुरुं भक्त्या स्वकांतं प्रणनाम सा ऋषयो मुनयश्चैव हर्षगद्गदमानसाः
Bowing devotedly to his teacher, she also bowed to her beloved; and the sages and seers, their hearts choked with joy,
योजयामास सत्कारं निर्मातुममरावतीम् 4.47.
He began to arrange with honor the construction of Amarāvatī.
नानारत्नविचित्राढ्यां मणिरत्नेंद्रनिर्मिताम्
Richly adorned with various precious gems, crafted by the lord of jewels,
विश्वकर्मा गृहं गंतुं न शशाक विनाऽऽज्ञया
Viśvakarmā was unable to go to the house without permission.
विज्ञाय तदभिप्रायं तमुवाच विधिः स्वयम्
Knowing his intention, Brahmā himself spoke to him.
श्रुत्वा तद्वचनं कारुः शीघ्रं प्रापामरावतीम्
Hearing those words, the artisan swiftly reached Amarāvatī.
हरिर्ब्रह्माणमाश्वास्य प्रस्थाप्य स्वगृहं च तम्
Hari, having reassured Brahmā, sent him to his own abode.
दण्डी छत्त्री शुक्लवासा बिभ्रत्तिलकमुज्ज्वलम्
Carrying a staff and parasol, clad in white garments, bearing a shining mark on his forehead,
वयसाऽतिशिशुर्बुद्ध्या ज्ञानवृद्ध्या विचक्षणः
Though very young in age, he was wise with the maturity of knowledge and discernment.
इंद्रद्वारे समुत्तिष्ठन्द्वारपालमुवाच ह
Approaching Indra’s gate, he rose up and spoke to the gatekeeper.
इत्येवं वचनं श्रुत्वा द्वारि ज्ञानं चकार तम्
Hearing these words, the doorkeeper recognized him at the entrance.
बालकानां बालिकानां समूहैः परिवेष्टितम् 4.47.
He was surrounded by groups of boys and girls.
प्रणनाम हरिर्भक्त्या तं हरिं शिशुरूपिणम्
Hari, with devotion, bowed to that Hari who had taken the form of a child.
मधुपर्कादिकं दत्त्वा शक्रः पूजां चकार तम्
Offering madhuparka and other gifts, Indra performed worship for him.
इंद्रस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा तमुवाच द्विजार्भकः
Hearing Indra’s words, the young brahmin boy replied to him.
कतिवर्षं च निर्माणे भवान्संकल्पितो यथा
For how many years and in what manner were you conceived in this creation?
एवंभूतं च निर्माणं न केनैंद्रेण निर्मितम्
Such a creation as this has not been made by any Indra.
बालकस्य वचः श्रुत्वा जहास स सुरेश्वरः
Hearing the boy’s words, the lord of the gods laughed.
कतींद्राणां समूहश्च त्वया दृष्टः श्रुतोऽथवा
How many groups of Indras have you seen or heard of?
शक्रस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रहस्य विप्रबालकः
Hearing Śakra’s words, the young brahmin laughed.
जानामि कश्यपं तात तव तातं प्रजापतिम् 4.47.
Dear one, I know Kaśyapa, your father, the lord of creatures.
पिपीलिकासमूहं च व्यायतं धनुषां शतम् 4.47.
A hundred bows, stretched out, matched the length of an army of ants.
ब्राह्मण उवाच 4.47.
The brāhmaṇa spoke.
कर्मणा स्वाङ्गहीनश्च स्वाङ्गवृद्धश्च कर्मणा
By action, one may be deprived of his own limbs, and by action, one’s limbs may be enhanced.
सुखदं पुण्यदं सारं नरकार्णवतारकम् 4.47.
It brings happiness, merit, and essence, and delivers from the ocean of hell.
कटं कथं मस्तके ते लोमचक्रं च वक्षसि ।। 4.47.
Why is there a scar on your head and a circle of hair on your chest?
दुर्लभं श्रीहरेर्दास्यं भक्तिर्मुक्तिर्गरीयसी 4.47.
Service to Lord Hari is rare; devotion is greater than liberation.
विश्वकर्माणमानीय प्रियमुक्त्वा शतक्रतुः
Having summoned Viśvakarman, Śatakratu spoke affectionately to him.
