श्रुतं यशः शूलभृतो दर्पभङ्गश्च दैवतः
The fame of the trident-bearer and the breaking of the god’s pride have been heard.
अधुना श्रोतुमिच्छामि दर्पभङ्गं हरेर्हरे
Now I wish to hear of the breaking of pride of Hari, O Hari.
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच कर्णपीयूषमतुलं सुन्दरं शृणु सुन्दरि
Śrī Krishna said: Listen, O beautiful one, to this tale, sweet as nectar to the ears, and incomparable.
पुरा शतमखो दर्पात्कृत्वा शतमखान्मुदा
Long ago, Indra, out of pride, performed a hundred sacrifices with joy.
दिनेदिने तदैश्वर्यं वर्द्धते तपसां फलात्
Day by day, his sovereignty increased as the fruit of his austerities.
स जजाप महामन्त्रं पुष्करे शतवत्सरम्
He recited the great mantra at Puṣkara for a hundred years.
ब्रह्मस्वरूपां प्रकृतिं संपन्मूढो न मन्यते ।।4.47.
Deluded, he did not recognize Prakriti, who is of the nature of Brahman.
एकदा प्रकृतेः शापाद्धतबुद्धिः स्वसंसदि
Once, due to a curse from Prakriti, his intellect destroyed, in his own assembly—
बृहस्पतिस्ततः कोपान्नोवास गृहमाययौ
Then, Bṛhaspati, angered, departed and went to his home.
उवाच मनसा दीनो यातु संपद्धरेरिति
He, distressed in mind, said: 'Let that wealth go to Hari.'
इत्युक्त्वा वेगतः पीठाज्जगाम तारकान्तिकम्
Having spoken thus, he swiftly left his seat and went to Tāraka.
सर्वं निवेदनं कृत्वा रुरोदोच्चैर्मुहुर्मुहुः
After making a full report, he wept loudly again and again.
वत्स गच्छ गृहं नैव गुरुं द्रक्ष्यसि साम्प्रतम्
Child, go home; you will not see your teacher at this time.
अधुना कर्मणां भोगं भुङ्क्ष्व मूढ दुराशय
Now, foolish one with vain hopes, enjoy the fruits of your actions.
सुदिनं दुर्दिनं शक्र कारणं सुखदुःखयोः
O Śakra, good days and bad days are the cause of happiness and sorrow.
जगाम शक्रः स्नानार्थं स्वर्णदीं सुमनोहराम्
Śakra went to the beautiful river of gold to bathe.
सस्मितां सकटाक्षां तामहल्यां गौतमप्रियाम् 4.47.
There he saw Ahalyā, Gautama's beloved, smiling and glancing sideways.
स तस्याः शक्रः संपश्यन्मुमोह काममोहितः
Śakra, gazing at her, was overcome with delusion, bewitched by desire.
मूर्तिं विधाय तद्भर्तुस्तत्समीपं जगाम ह
Assuming the form of her husband, he went near to her.
चकार विविधं तत्र शृंगारं सुमनोहरम्
There, he performed various delightful acts of love.
निश्चेष्टा सुखसंभोगान्निश्चेष्टस्त्रिदशाधिपः
The lord of the gods remained motionless, absorbed in pleasure.
ददर्श गेहे मिथुनं मैथुने च रतिप्रिये
He saw a couple in the house, engaged in passionate union.
विज्ञानेनातिरोषेण बभञ्ज सुरतिक्षणम्
With knowledge and intense anger, he broke the moment of pleasure.
कालस्वरूपं त्रासेन दधार चरणाम्बुजम् उवाच नीतिवचनं गौतमः शरणागतम्
Out of fear, he took the form of Time and held the lotus feet; Gautama spoke words of wisdom to the one who had sought refuge.
प्रपौत्र जगतां स्रष्टुर्बुद्धिस्ते कथमीदृशी
O great-grandson of the creator of worlds, how could your mind be like this?
कर्मसाध्यः स्वभावश्च कुलधर्मं प्रबाधते 4.47.
Nature, shaped by actions, overpowers the law of the lineage.
योनीनां च सहस्रं च तव गात्रे भवत्विह
A thousand wombs shall appear upon your body here.
ततः सूर्यं समाराध्य योनिश्चक्षुर्भविष्यति
Then, by worshipping the sun, your womb will become an eye.
मच्छापेन गुरोः कोपाद्भ्रष्टश्रीर्भव साम्प्रतम्
By my command and the anger of the guru, you are now deprived of fortune.
तेजस्विनोऽतिबन्धोर्मे बंधुभेदभिया सुर
O god, because of my excessive brilliance and fear of division among kin—
