प्रधानाङ्गमुखं धातुस्ततो जातश्च बालकः
From the principal limb of Dhātṛ, a boy was then born.
अतितेजस्विनि भृगुर्वर्त्तते नाग्नि शौनक
Bhrigu, exceedingly radiant, is present, not Agni, O Shaunaka.
बालोऽप्यरुणवर्णश्च जातः सद्योऽतितेजसा 1.22.
Even as a boy, he was of reddish complexion, born instantly with great brilliance.
हंसा आत्मवशा यस्य योगेन योगिनो धुवम्
The swans, at whose will, through yoga, yogis always remain.
वशीभूतश्च शिष्यश्च जातः सद्यो हि बालकः
The boy became both controlled and a disciple, born instantly.
सन्ततं यस्य यत्नं च तपःसु बालकस्य च पुलस्तपःसु वेदेषु वर्त्ततेऽहः स्फुटेऽपि च
The continuous effort and austerity of the boy, Pulastya, are clearly present in the Vedas even today.
स्फुटस्तपःसमूहश्च पुलहस्तेन बालकः तपःसंघस्वरूपश्च पुलस्त्यस्तेन बालकः
A distinct group of austerities was formed by Pulaha with the boy; and Pulastya, with the boy, took the form of a community of austerities.
त्रिगुणायां प्रकृत्यां त्रिर्विष्णावश्च प्रवर्त्तते
In the threefold nature, and in three forms of Vishnu, it operates.

अपान्तरतमे देशे तपस्तेपेऽन्यजन्मनि
In the innermost region, he practiced austerity in another birth.
स्वयं तपः समाप्नोति वाहयेत्प्रापयेत्परान्
He himself attains austerity, and he causes or leads others to attain it.
तपसस्तेजसा बालो दीप्तिमान्सततं मुने
By the power of his austerity, the child is always radiant, O sage.
कोपकाले बभूवुर्ये स्रष्टुरेकादश स्मृताः 1.22.
Those who arose at the time of wrath are remembered as the eleven forms of the Creator.
शौनक उवाच भवान्पुराणतत्त्वज्ञः सन्देहं छेत्तुमर्हति
Śaunaka said: You are knowledgeable in the essence of the Purāṇas; you should dispel my doubt.
सौतिरुवाच तमोगुणास्ते रुद्राश्च दुर्निवारा भयंकराः
Sauti said: Those Rudras, endowed with the quality of darkness, are difficult to restrain and terrifying.
कालाग्निरुद्रः संहर्त्ता तेष्वेकः शंकरांशकः
Kālāgnirudra is the destroyer among them, possessing a portion of Śaṃkara.
अन्ये कृष्णस्य च कलास्तावंशौ विष्णुशंकरौ
The others are portions of Kṛṣṇa; Viṣṇu and Śaṃkara are his two chief portions.
उक्तं रुद्रोद्भवे काले कथं विस्मरति द्विज
It is said that Rudra was born in time; how does he forget, O twice-born?
सनकश्च सनंदश्च तृतीयश्च सनातनः
Sanaka, Sanaṃda, and the third, Sanātana—
सनकश्च सनन्दश्च तौ द्वावानन्दवाचकौ
Sanaka and Sananda—these two are signifiers of bliss.
सनातनश्च श्रीकृष्णो नित्यः पूर्णतमः स्वयम्
Sanātana and Śrī Kṛṣṇa are eternal, and Kṛṣṇa is the most complete in himself.
सनत्तु नित्यवचनः कुमारः शिशुवाचकः 1.22.
Sanat is called eternal, Kumāra is the signifier of childhood.
ब्रह्मणो बालकानां च व्युत्पत्तिः कथिता मुने
The origin of Brahmā's sons has been described, O sage.
सौतिरुवाच नारदं प्रेरयामास सृष्टिं कर्त्तुं च शौनक
Sauti said: He sent Nārada to create the world, O Śaunaka.
हितं सत्यं वेदसारं परिणामसुखावहम्
That which is beneficial, true, the essence of the Veda, and brings happiness in the end.
ब्रह्मोवाच ज्ञानदीपशिखाज्ञानतिमिरक्षयकारक
Brahmā said: The flame of the lamp of knowledge destroys the darkness of ignorance.
पूर्वेषामपि वन्द्यानां जनकः परमो गुरुः
He is the supreme teacher, the progenitor even of those who are worthy of veneration by the ancients.
तवाहं जनकः पुत्र विद्यादाता च पालकः
I am your father, O son, the giver of knowledge and your protector.
स च शिष्यः सोऽपि पुत्रो यश्चाज्ञां पालयेद्गुरोः
He is a disciple, and also a son, who obeys the command of the teacher.
स पण्डितः स च ज्ञानी स क्षेमी स च पुण्यवान्
He is learned, he is wise, he is secure, and he is virtuous.
