पूर्णमब्दं महायोगी विरहातुरमानसः
For a full year, the great yogi, his mind afflicted by separation,
बभूव सिद्धपीठानां समूहो वाञ्छितप्रदः
There arose a gathering of siddha-pīṭhas, bestowers of all desires.
अस्थिमालां विनिर्माय चकार कण्ठभूषणम्
He fashioned a garland of bones and made it an ornament for his neck.
सति प्राणेश्वरीत्युक्त्वा पुनर्मूर्च्छामवाप सः
Having spoken, 'Sati, mistress of life,' he again fell into a swoon.
स्वात्मारामः पूर्णकामो निश्चेष्टो विरहज्वरात्
Immersed in his own self, fulfilled in desire, he lay motionless from the fever of separation.
दृष्ट्वा देवाः समाजग्मुर्विस्मिताः शिवसन्निधिम् 4.43.
Seeing this, the gods gathered, astonished, in the presence of Shiva.
रत्नयानेनाजगाम पद्मार्चितपदाम्बुजः
He arrived in a jeweled chariot, his lotus feet worshipped by Padma.
ईषद्धास्यप्रसन्नास्यो वनमालाविभूषितः
His face was radiant with a gentle smile, adorned with a garland of forest flowers.
समूषुरीशसदसि लक्ष्मीकान्त प्रणम्य ते रुदन्तं बोधयामास ज्ञानीशो ज्ञानिनां गुरुम्
In the assembly of lords, Lakshmi's beloved bowed to you and began to console the weeping one, the lord of wisdom, the guru of the wise.
श्रीभगवानुवाच
The Blessed Lord spoke:
हितमध्यात्मसारं च दुःखशोकनिकृन्तनम्
I shall speak what is beneficial, the essence of the self, which cuts away sorrow and suffering.
तथापि बोधयामि त्वां सर्वज्ञं वेधसो विधिम्
Yet I instruct you, all-knowing one, creator of the worlds.
व्यवहारोऽस्ति लोकेषु सर्वः सर्वपरस्परम् .
In all worlds, mutual dealings exist among all beings.
विष्णुमाया बलवती गुणयुक्तं प्रबाधते
Vishnu's maya is powerful; endowed with qualities, it overwhelms.
तत्रातीते कुतस्तानि सुदिने च समागते
Where are those things in the past, and when a good day arrives?
सर्वाण्येतानि गण्यन्ते स्वप्नानीव विपश्चितः 4.43.
All these are counted as dreams by the wise.
चेतनां कुरु भद्रं ते सतीं प्राप्स्यसि निश्चितम्
Awaken your consciousness; you will surely regain Sati.
तेजः सूर्यं महीं गन्धो तथा त्वां च सती शिव
The brilliance of the sun, the earth, fragrance, and you, Sati, O Shiva.
नेत्राण्युन्मीलनं कृत्वा त्रिनेत्रः श्रूयतामिति कस्त्वं तेजःस्वरूपोऽसि क इमे तव सन्निधौ
Opening his eyes, the three-eyed one said, 'Let it be heard: Who are you, of the nature of radiance? Who are these in your presence?'
किन्नाम भवतश्चैषां कानि नामानि का सती
What are their names, and what are your names? Who is Sati?
क्व यास्यसि क्व यास्यामि क्व गच्छन्त इमे वद
Where will you go, where shall I go, and where are these others going? Tell me.
नेत्रनीरैस्त्रिनेत्रं तं रुदन्तं प्रसिषेच सः
With tears from his three eyes, he drenched him as he wept.
बभूव सरसां श्रेष्ठं तीर्थं भुवनपावनम्
It became the foremost of lakes, a holy place that purifies the world.
स्थलं बभूव तपसां मुक्तिबीजं तपस्विनाम्
That place became, through austerity, the seed of liberation for ascetics.
शृण्वतां सर्वदेवानां मुनीनामूर्ध्वरेतसाम् शृणु शंकर वक्ष्यामि ज्ञानानंद सनातन
In the presence of all the gods and the sages of pure vows, listen, O Shankara, I will speak of knowledge, bliss, and eternity.
ज्ञानं ज्ञाननिधे शोकाद्विस्मृतोऽसि परात्पर 4.43.
O treasure of knowledge, you have forgotten knowledge, supreme among the supreme, due to sorrow.
सर्वेषां प्राकृतानां च ते बीजे सुखदुःखयोः
In the seed of all beings, pleasure and pain arise for you.
राग ऐश्वर्यकामश्च विद्वेषश्च निरन्तरम्
Attachment, desire for power, and constant hatred—
हतान्येतानि सर्वाणि हते बीजे महेश्वर
All these are destroyed, O Maheshvara, when the seed is destroyed.
तत्कर्म तपसा साध्यं कर्मणा च शुभाशुभम्
That action is accomplished by austerity, and by action, both auspicious and inauspicious.
