अपरं भवितव्यं च सर्वमुक्त्वा जगाम सा 4.42.
Having told all that was yet to come, she departed.
बभूवादर्शना योगात्सर्वासां सिद्धियोगिनी
By the power of yoga, the Siddha-yoginī became invisible to all.
स्मृत्वा तच्चरणाम्भोजं देहं तत्याज सुन्दरी
Remembering those lotus feet, the beautiful one abandoned her body.
संजहार पुरा येन दैत्यानामखिलं कुलम्
She withdrew, just as she had once destroyed the entire race of the Daityas.
जग्मुः शंकरसेनाश्च देशयज्ञं विनश्य च
The armies of Śaṅkara departed, and the sacrificial land was destroyed.
सत्वरं सर्ववृत्तान्तं कथयामासुरीश्वरम् जगाम स्वर्णदीतीरं यत्र देवीकलेवरम्
Swiftly, they reported all that had happened to the Lord, and went to the bank of the golden river where the body of the goddess lay.
नारायण उवाच अम्लानपद्मवक्त्रां तां शयानां जाह्नवीतटे
Nārāyaṇa said: There she lay on the bank of the Jāhnavī, her face like an unfading lotus.
दधतीमक्षमालां च प्रतप्तकाञ्चनप्रभाम्
She held a rosary and shone with the radiance of molten gold.
दृष्ट्वा सतीशरीरं च प्रदग्धो विरहाग्निना
Seeing Satī’s body, scorched by the fire of separation—
कलत्रशोको बलवान्स्वात्मारामं परात्परम्
The sorrow for his wife was overpowering, even for the supreme self-delighting Lord.
क्षणेन चेतनां प्राप्य तामुवाच त्रिलोचनः
In a moment, regaining consciousness, the three-eyed one spoke to her.
साश्रुनेत्रोऽतिदीनश्च दीनानां शरणप्रदः
His eyes filled with tears, utterly dejected, he who gives refuge to the distressed—
शंकर उवाच शङ्करोऽहं तव स्वामी पश्य मां निकटागतम्
Śaṅkara said: I am Śaṅkara, your lord; see me, I have come near.
शिवं शिवप्रदं सर्वसंपद्रूपं च सिद्धिदम्
I am auspicious, bestower of auspiciousness, the embodiment of all prosperity, and the giver of success.
शक्तोऽहं च त्वया सार्द्धं सर्वशक्तिस्वरूपया
I am able, together with you, who are the embodiment of all power.
यश्च शक्तिं न जानाति ज्ञानहीनश्च निन्दति 4.43.
He who does not know Shakti, and who, lacking knowledge, reviles her—
स्वयं ब्रह्मा स्वयं विष्णुः साध्यभूता वयं तव
We ourselves are Brahma, we ourselves are Vishnu, and we exist because of you.
मधुराभासदृष्ट्या च मां दग्धं सेचनं कुरु
With a sweet and gentle gaze, soothe me, who am scorched.
कथमद्यापि रुष्टेव विलपन्तं न भाषसे
Why do you not speak to me, as if still angry, while I lament?
परित्यज्य च नः प्राणान्गन्तुं नार्हसि सुन्दरि
O beautiful one, you should not abandon our lives and depart.
पतिव्रते समुत्तिष्ठ कथं मां नाद्य सेवसे
O chaste wife, arise; why do you not serve me today?
इत्युक्त्वा मृतदेहं च प्रियाया विरहातुरः
Having spoken thus, tormented by separation from his beloved, he approached her lifeless body.
अधरे चाधरं दत्त्वा वक्षो वक्षसि शङ्करः
Shankara placed his lip upon her lip, and his chest upon her chest.
पुनः स चेतनां प्राप्य वेगादुत्थाय शोकतः
Then, regaining consciousness, he rose up swiftly in his grief.
सप्तद्वीपसप्तसिन्धुं लोकालोकं च काञ्चनम्
Across the seven continents, the seven oceans, and the golden Lokāloka mountain,
शतशृङ्गगिरेः पार्श्वे जम्बुद्वीपे च भारते 4.43.
On the side of the hundred-peaked mountain, in Jambudvīpa, in Bhārata,
रुरोदोच्चैः स्वयं कृत्वा सति साध्वीत्युदीर्य च
He himself cried out loudly, exclaiming, 'Sati! O virtuous one!'
तन्नेत्रं च सरो नाम मुनीनां तपसः स्थलम्
That place became a lake named Saro, the site of the sages' austerities.
यत्र स्नात्वा पुनर्जन्म नराणां न भवेद्गिरे
Where, after bathing, men are not born again, O mountain.
त्यक्त्वा तां मानवीं मूर्तिं नरा यान्ति हरेः पदम्
Abandoning that human form, men attain the abode of Hari.
