पश्चाद्बभूव सत्पुत्रा तद्भर्तुरधिका गुणैः
Later, she had a virtuous son, surpassing her husband in qualities.
रक्ष सर्वबन्धुवर्गानात्मनः सर्वसंपदम् 4.42.
Protect all your relatives and all your wealth.
लग्नाधिपे च लग्नस्थे चन्द्रे स्वतनयान्विते
When the lord of the ascendant is in the ascendant, and the Moon is joined with one's own children,
मार्गशीर्षे चन्द्रवारे सर्वदोषविवर्जिते
In Mārgaśīrṣa month, on a Monday, when all faults are absent,
सदपत्यप्रदेऽतीव पतिसौभाग्यदायिनि
It bestows good offspring and greatly grants the good fortune of a husband.
अत्यन्तप्रेमाविच्छेदप्रदायिनि परात्परे
It gives unbroken, supreme love, O Supreme One.
जगदम्बां जगत्पित्रे मूलप्रकृतिमीश्वरीम्
To the Mother of the world, to the Father of the world, to the primal Nature, to the Lady of Lords,
आविर्भूता पुरा कल्पे देवानां रक्षणाय च
She manifested in a former age for the protection of the gods.
अस्याः स्वतेजसा दैत्याः केचिद्दग्धाः पलायिताः
By her own splendor, some demons were burned, some fled,
बिलं प्रविविशुः केचिन्मूर्च्छां प्रापुश्च केचन
Some entered into holes, and some fell unconscious.
निःशत्रवो बभूवुस्ते सुरा अस्याः प्रसादतः 4.42.
By her favor, the gods became without enemies.
दक्षश्च विधिवद्देवीं प्रददौ शूलपाणये
Dakṣa, according to the rite, gave the goddess to the wielder of the trident.
बभूव कलहः शैल तेन शूलभृता महान्
Because of that, a great conflict arose between the mountain and the trident-bearer.
दक्षश्च सगणो रुष्टः प्रययौ स्वालयं तदा
Then Dakṣa, angry with his attendants, went to his own abode.
न ददौ यज्ञभागं च मात्सर्याच्छूलपाणये
Out of jealousy, he did not give a share of the sacrifice to the trident-bearer.
निर्भर्त्स्य च बहुतरं हृदयेन विदूयता
He harshly reproached him many times, with a heart full of pain.
भविष्यं कथयामास त्रिकालज्ञा परात्परा
The supreme knower of the three times began to speak of the future.
पलायनं च देवानां यज्ञस्थानाद्गिरीश्वरम्
She told of the flight of the gods from the sacrificial place and of the Lord of Mountains.
जयं शंकरसैन्यानां स्वात्मनो मृत्युमेव च
She spoke of the victory of Śaṅkara’s armies and also of her own death.
निर्माणं नेत्ररसः प्रबोधं च जनार्दनात्
She described the creation, the essence of the eye, and the awakening by Janārdana.
अपरं भवितव्यं च सर्वमुक्त्वा जगाम सा 4.42.
Having told all that was yet to come, she departed.
बभूवादर्शना योगात्सर्वासां सिद्धियोगिनी
By the power of yoga, the Siddha-yoginī became invisible to all.
स्मृत्वा तच्चरणाम्भोजं देहं तत्याज सुन्दरी
Remembering those lotus feet, the beautiful one abandoned her body.
संजहार पुरा येन दैत्यानामखिलं कुलम्
She withdrew, just as she had once destroyed the entire race of the Daityas.
जग्मुः शंकरसेनाश्च देशयज्ञं विनश्य च
The armies of Śaṅkara departed, and the sacrificial land was destroyed.
सत्वरं सर्ववृत्तान्तं कथयामासुरीश्वरम् जगाम स्वर्णदीतीरं यत्र देवीकलेवरम्
Swiftly, they reported all that had happened to the Lord, and went to the bank of the golden river where the body of the goddess lay.
नारायण उवाच अम्लानपद्मवक्त्रां तां शयानां जाह्नवीतटे
Nārāyaṇa said: There she lay on the bank of the Jāhnavī, her face like an unfading lotus.
दधतीमक्षमालां च प्रतप्तकाञ्चनप्रभाम्
She held a rosary and shone with the radiance of molten gold.
दृष्ट्वा सतीशरीरं च प्रदग्धो विरहाग्निना
Seeing Satī’s body, scorched by the fire of separation—
कलत्रशोको बलवान्स्वात्मारामं परात्परम्
The sorrow for his wife was overpowering, even for the supreme self-delighting Lord.
