देहि त्वं स्वेच्छया कन्यां देहि भद्र शिवाय च 4.41.
Give your daughter as you wish; give her, O blessed one, to Śiva.
प्राक्तनाद्यस्य या कांता सा तं प्राप्नोति वल्लभम्
The beloved whom one had in a previous life, she attains him as her dear one.
विवाहे नोत्सुकः शंभुः स्वात्मारामश्च तत्त्ववित्
Śaṃbhu is not eager for marriage; he is self-content and a knower of truth.
देवानां पीडनं दृष्ट्वा ब्रह्मणा प्रार्थितो विभुः
Seeing the suffering of the gods, the Lord was entreated by Brahmā.
कृत्वा प्रतिज्ञां योगींद्रो दृष्ट्वा क्लेशमसंख्यकम्
Having made a vow, the lord of yogis, seeing their countless distress,
तामाश्वास्य वरं दत्त्वा जगाम निजमंदिरम्
Having comforted her and granted a boon, he went to his own abode.
नारायणश्च भगवान्ब्रह्मा धर्मश्च सांप्रतम्
Now, Nārāyaṇa, the Blessed Lord, Brahmā, and Dharma,
तत्र सर्वे मुदा युक्तैः समालोचनकर्तृभिः
There, all those engaged with joy in deliberation together.
तव प्रबोधने प्रीतिर्वर्द्धते महती सदा
Your delight in awakening ever grows greatly.
शिवां शिवाय शैलेंद्र स्वेच्छया चेन्न दास्यसि ।। । भविता वा विवाहश्च भवितव्यबलेन च
O lord of mountains, if you do not give Śivā to Śiva of your own will, then marriage will still occur by the force of destiny.
आगमिष्यति देवो यो नारायणसहायवान् 4.41.
The god who is accompanied by Nārāyaṇa will come.
योगींद्राणां वरेण्यं तं ज्ञानिनां च गुरोर्गुरुम्
He is the best among yogis, the guru of the wise, and the teacher of teachers.
वरं ददौ शिवायै स शिवश्च तपसः स्थले
Śiva granted the boon to Śivā at the place of her austerity.
ब्रह्मादिस्तंबपर्यतं सर्वं नश्वरमस्थिरम्
All, from Brahmā down to a blade of grass, is perishable and unstable.
एको महेंद्रः शैलानां पक्षांश्चिच्छेद लीलया
The one great lord of mountains effortlessly cut the wings.
के वा शैलेषु योद्धारः सुरैः सह हिमालय
O Himālaya, who among the mountains is a warrior able to fight alongside the gods?
एकार्थे यदि शैलेन्द्र सर्वसंपद्विनश्यति
If, for a single purpose, all prosperity is lost, O lord of mountains—
शरणागतरक्षार्थं प्राणांश्च दातुमर्हति
One should be ready to give even one's life to protect those who have sought refuge.
दत्त्वा विप्राय स्वसुतामनरण्यो नृपेश्वर
Having given his daughter to the brāhmaṇa, King Anaraṇya—
तमाशु बोधयामासुर्नीतिशास्त्रविदो जनाः
Then, those learned in the science of ethics quickly instructed him.
त्वमेव शैलराजेंद्र सुतां दत्त्वा शिवाय च 4.41.
O king of mountains, you yourself, having given your daughter to Śiva—
वसिष्ठस्य वचः श्रुत्वा प्रहस्य पर्वतेश्वरः
Hearing the words of Vasiṣṭha, the lord of mountains smiled.
हिमालय उवाच सुतां दत्त्वा स च कथमरक्षत्सर्वसंपदम्
Himālaya said: Having given his daughter, how did he protect all his prosperity?
वसिष्ठ उवाच चिंरजीवी धर्मशीलो वैष्णवो विजितेंद्रियः
Vasiṣṭha said: He was long-lived, righteous, devoted to Viṣṇu, and self-controlled.
स्वायंभुवो मनुः पूर्वं ब्रह्मपुत्रोऽतिधार्मिकः
In former times, Svāyambhuva Manu, son of Brahmā, was exceedingly righteous.
ततो जगाम वैकुण्ठं सहितः शतरूपया
Then, together with Śatarūpā, he went to Vaikuṇṭha.
एकादशो मनुश्रेष्ठो धर्मसावर्णिरुच्यते 4.41.
The eleventh, best among men, is called Dharma Sāvarṇi.
अपुत्रको नृपश्रेष्ठस्तपसे पुष्करं गतः ।। 4.41.
The best of kings, being without a son, went to Puṣkara for austerities.
ततः सुभग्नचित्तः सञ्चिन्तयन्दारसंग्रहम्
Then, his mind greatly troubled, he pondered over the gathering of wives.
ददर्श पद्मां युवती पद्मामिव मनोरमाम् 4.41.
He saw a young woman as lovely as a lotus, charming like Padmā herself.
