चन्दनोक्षितसर्वाङ्गं भक्तानुग्रहकातरम्
His entire body was anointed with sandalwood, eager to bestow grace upon devotees.
गात्रे शिरसि तत्सर्वं भिक्षुकस्य ददर्श ह
He saw all this—on the body and head—upon the beggar.
ददर्श शैलस्तत्सर्वं भिक्षुकस्य पुरः स्थितम्
The mountain saw all this, present before the beggar.
गोपवेषं किशोरं च सस्मितं श्यामसुन्दरम्
He saw a cowherd boy, smiling, dark and beautiful.
चन्दनोक्षितसर्वाङ्गं वनमालाविभूषितम्
His entire body was anointed with sandalwood and adorned with a garland of forest flowers.
त्रिशूलपट्टिशकरं व्याघ्रचर्माम्बरं परम्
He bore a trident and spear, and was clothed in a tiger skin, supreme.
नागयज्ञोपवीतं च तप्तस्वर्णजटाधरम्
He wore a serpent as a sacred thread and had matted locks of burnished gold.
प्रजपन्तं हरेर्नाम श्वेताब्जबीजमालया
He was reciting the name of Hari, with a garland of white lotus seeds.
स्वतेजसा प्रज्वलन्तं पञ्चवक्त्रं त्रिलोचनम् 4.40.
Radiant with his own brilliance, he shone forth with five faces and three eyes.
तदा बभूव ज्ञानं च मेनकाशैलयोः प्रिये 4.40.
At that time, knowledge arose between Menaka and the mountain, dear one.
शठाय संध्याहीनाय वाप्यैकफलदा सुता 4.40.
To the deceitful one, who neglects the twilight rites, a daughter gives only a single fruit, even from a pond.
अनन्तरत्नाधारं च त्वमेव रक्ष भारते 4.40.
O Bharata, you alone must protect the support of the endless jewels.
विष्णुभक्तिप्रदं चैव पुराणं च श्रुतेः परम् 4.40.
It bestows devotion to Vishnu and is a Purana surpassing the Vedas.
अनिच्छया सुतां दत्त्वा सुखं तिष्ठतु भारते 4.40.
Having given his daughter unwillingly, let Bharata dwell in happiness.
इत्येवं कथितं सर्वं देवा गच्छन्तु मन्दिरम्
Thus, everything has been told; let the gods go to the temple.
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच सर्वे निवेदनं चक्रुर्ब्रह्माणं जगतां पतिम्
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: All offered their submission to Brahmā, the lord of the worlds.
देवा ऊचुः तव सृष्टौ जगत्स्रष्टा रत्नाधारो हिमालयः
The gods said: In your creation, O creator of the world, the Himalaya is the support of jewels.
सुतां शूलभृते दत्त्वा भक्त्या शैलेश्वरः स्वयम्
Having devotedly given his daughter to the wielder of the trident, the lord of the mountain himself—
त्वं तस्य निन्दनं कृत्वा विमतिं प्रतिपादय
You, by censuring him, bring about confusion in his mind.
देवानां वचनं श्रुत्वा तानुवाच विधिः स्वयम्
Hearing the words of the gods, the creator himself replied to them.
ब्रह्मोवाच संपद्विनाशरूपां च विपदो बीजरूपिणीम्
Brahmā said: Calamity, in the form of loss of fortune, is the seed of adversity.
भूतेशं प्रस्थापयत स्वात्मनिन्दां करोति सः
Send the lord of beings; he will bring about self-reproach.
ब्रह्मणो वचनं श्रुत्वा तं प्रणम्य सुराः प्रिये
Hearing Brahmā's words, the gods, O dear one, bowed to him.
सर्वे निवेदनं चक्रुः शंकरं करुणालयम्
All offered their submission to Śaṅkara, the abode of compassion.
देवा मुमुदिरे सर्वे शीघ्रं गत्वा स्वमन्दिरम् 4.41.
All the gods rejoiced and quickly went to their own abodes.
अथ शैलः सभामध्ये समुवास मुदाऽन्वितः
Then the mountain, filled with joy, sat in the midst of the assembly.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र विप्ररूपी शिवः स्वयम्
Meanwhile, at that moment, Śiva himself appeared there in the form of a brāhmaṇa.
दण्डी छत्री दीर्घवासा बिभ्रत्तिलकमुत्तमम्
He bore a staff and an umbrella, wore long garments, and displayed an excellent forehead mark.
तं च दृष्ट्वा समुत्तस्थौ सगणश्च हिमालयः
Seeing him, Himālaya, along with his attendants, rose up.
ननाम पार्वती भक्त्या प्राणेशं विप्ररूपिणम्
Pārvatī, with devotion, bowed to the Lord of Life, who had taken the form of a brāhmaṇa.
