Wherever I am born, I will obtain the supreme Shiva.
Indeed, all women attain their beloved and the birth they desire.
The former husband is theirs in every birth.
Not having attained that body here, I performed even more terrible austerities.
Having spoken thus, Pārvatī entered there before him.
As Pārvatī, O supreme goddess, was entering the fire,
Having remained there for a moment, Śiva beheld the rising goddess.
Śrī Mahādeva said: The body was not burned by the fire, nor was the desired result attained.
You wish to make Śiva, the auspicious one, your husband.
If you desire as husband the destroyer, O pure-smiling one,
If, O goddess, you wish for liberation, having made your beloved of your own form,
Śiva is not seen as the destroyer in auspiciousness or in liberation.
If you desire him as the agent of destruction, O beautiful one,
Then liberation will not be yours, nor the worship of the gods as you wish.
Quickly go to your father's house; there you will see Śaṅkara.
Having spoken thus to Pārvatī, the sage vanished there itself.
Hearing of Pārvatī's coming, Menakā and Himālaya,
Having placed auspicious pots along the royal path, O Rādhikā,
With branches of the rasāla tree bound with silken threads,
With groups of women, married and with sons, holding lamps,
And with most virtuous brāhmaṇas, as well as sages and celibates,
And with officiating priests, making auspicious sounds, holding beautiful garlands of mālatī flowers, praised and excellent.
With various kinds of musical instruments and the resounding sound of conch shells,
Durga entered the city and saw her parents before her.
The goddess, with a cheerful face, bowed to them along with her companions.
Crying out, 'O child, O child!' the two, overwhelmed with love, wept.
The women performed auspicious rites, and the Brahmins bestowed blessings.
They arranged for auspicious ceremonies and recited Vedic hymns.
The two lived happily, their minds filled with abundant joy.
She stayed joyfully in the courtyard together with Menaka's daughter.
