तत्र स्नात्वा विप्रदत्तं विष्णुमन्त्रं जजाप सः
There, after bathing, he recited the Vishnu mantra given by the brahmin.
महारण्ये च घोरे च अश्वत्थमूलसन्निधौ
And in the great and terrible forest, at the foot of an ashvattha tree,
शौनक उवाच दत्तं परं श्रींहरेश्च तद्भवान्वक्तु मर्हति
Shaunaka said: The supreme wealth given by Shri Hari—worthy sir, you should tell that.
सौतिरुवाच द्वाविंशत्यक्षरो मन्त्रो वेदेषु च सुदुर्लभः
Sauti said: The mantra of twenty-two syllables, which is very rare even in the Vedas,
तं च ब्रह्मा ददौ भक्त्या कुमाराय च धीमते
That, Brahma gave with devotion to the wise Kumara.
ॐ श्रीं नमो भगवते रास मण्डलेश्वराय 1.21.
"Om, Shri, obeisance to the Lord of the rasa circle."
महापुरुषस्तोत्रं च पूर्वोक्तं कवचं च यत्
Also, the great hymn to the Supreme Person and the previously mentioned protective charm,
तेजोमण्डलरूपे च सूर्य्यकोटिसमप्रभे
In the form of a circle of light, shining like ten million suns,
ध्यायन्ते वैष्णवा रूपं तदभ्यन्तरसन्निधौ
The Vaishnavas meditate on that form in the innermost presence.
नवीनजलदश्यामं शरत्पङ्कजलोचनम्
Of fresh raincloud hue, with eyes like autumn lotuses,
मुक्तापङ्क्तिविनिन्दैकदन्तपंक्तिमनोहरम्
With a row of teeth more beautiful than a string of pearls,
कोटिकन्दर्पलावण्यं लीलाधाम मनोहरम्
Of beauty surpassing millions of Cupids, the abode of playful charm,
त्रिभङ्गसङ्गि वा युक्तं द्विभुजं पीतवाससम्
Standing in the tribhanga pose, with two arms, clad in yellow garments,
रत्नकुण्डलयुग्मेन गण्डस्थलविराजितम्
Adorned on the cheeks with a pair of jeweled earrings,
शोभितं जानुपर्य्यन्तं मालतीवनमालया
From the knee upwards, adorned with a garland of jasmine flowers.
मणिना कौस्तुभेन्द्रेण वक्षस्थलसमुज्ज्वलम् 1.21.
The chest shines brilliantly with the Kaustubha gem.
स्थिरयौवनयुक्ताभिर्वेष्टिताभिश्च सन्ततम्
Constantly surrounded by those endowed with steadfast youth.
ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवाद्यैश्च पूजितं वन्दितं स्तुतम्
Worshipped, saluted, and praised by Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and others.
निर्लिप्तं साक्षिरूपं च निर्गुणं प्रकृतेः परम्
Untouched, witness-like, without qualities, transcending nature.
इदं ते कथितं ध्यानं स्तोत्रं च कवचं मुने
This meditation, hymn, and protective chant have been told to you, O sage.
साम्प्रतं बालकस्तस्थौ ध्यानस्थस्तत्र शौनक
At that moment, the boy remained in meditation there, O Shaunaka.
शक्तिमान्परिपुष्टश्च सिद्धमन्त्रप्रभावत
Empowered and nourished by the efficacy of perfected mantra.
रत्नसिंहासनस्थं च रत्नभूषणभूषितम्
Seated upon a throne of jewels, adorned with jeweled ornaments.
गोपैर्गोपाङ्गनाभिश्च वेष्टितं पीतवाससम्
Surrounded by cowherds and cowherd women, clad in yellow garments.
ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवाद्यैश्च स्तूयमानं परात्परम्
Praised by Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and others, supreme beyond the supreme.
विरराम च शोकार्तो यदा तद्द्रष्टुमक्षमः 1.21.
He ceased, afflicted by sorrow, unable to behold that.
बभूवाकाशवाणीति रुदन्तं बालकं प्रति
A voice from the sky spoke to the weeping boy.
सकृद्यद्दर्शितं रूपं तदेव नाधुना पुनः
The form shown once is not to be seen again now.
एतस्मिन्विग्रहेऽतीते संप्राप्ते दिव्यविग्रहे
When that form passed, the divine form appeared.
इति श्रुत्वा बालकश्च विरराम मुदाऽन्वितः
Hearing this, the boy stopped, filled with joy.
