दधतं संस्कृतां मालां जपन्तं मम नामकम्
He saw him adorned with a refined garland, reciting my name in prayer.
वृषभस्थं शूलपाणिं सर्वभूषणराजितम्
He saw him seated upon a bull, holding a trident, adorned with all ornaments.
शुद्धस्फटिकसंकाशं व्याघ्रचर्मधरं परम्
He saw him shining like pure crystal, supreme, wearing a tiger skin.
पञ्चवक्त्रं त्रिनयनं सूर्यकोटिसमप्रभम्
He saw him with five faces, three eyes, and a radiance equal to ten million suns.
शिववामे महाकालं दक्षिणे नन्दिकेश्वरम्
On Shiva's left was Mahākāla; on his right, Nandikeśvara.
वेतालान्क्षेत्रपालांश्च भैरवान्भीमविक्रमान्
He saw the Vetālas, Kṣetrapālas, and Bhairavas, all of formidable might.
जैगीषव्यं देवलं च काणादं गौतमं तथा 4.38.
He saw Jaigīṣavya, Devala, Kāṇāda, and Gautama as well.
जाजलिं करखं कर्णं लोमशं सूर्यवर्चसम्
He saw Jājali, Karakha, Karṇa, Lomaśa, and Sūryavarcas.
शातातपं पारिभद्रमष्टावक्रं मरुद्भवम्
Śātātapa, Pāribhadra, Aṣṭāvakra, and Marudbhava—
मूर्ध्ना निपत्य भूमौ स दण्डवत्संपुटाञ्जलिः ननाम चाश्रुनेत्रः स पुलकाञ्चितविग्रहः
He fell to the ground with his head, prostrating like a staff, with hands joined in reverence; his eyes filled with tears, his body thrilled with horripilation, he bowed.
धर्मदत्तेन स्तोत्रेण तुष्टाव परमेश्वरम्
With the hymn composed by Dharmadatta, he praised the Supreme Lord.
हिमालय उवाच
Himālaya spoke:
त्वं शिवः शिवदोऽनन्तः सर्वसंहारकारकः
You are Śiva, the bestower of auspiciousness, the infinite one, the agent of all dissolution.
प्रकृतः प्रकृतीशश्च प्राकृतः प्रकृतेः परः येषु रूपेषु यत्प्रीतिस्तत्तद्रूपं बिभर्षि च
You are the natural, the Lord of nature, the primordial, and beyond nature; in whatever forms there is delight, you assume those very forms.
सूर्यस्त्वं सृष्टिजनक आधारः सर्वतेजसाम्
You are the Sun, the creator of creation, the support of all radiance.
वायुस्त्वं वरुणस्त्वं च त्वमग्निः सर्वदाहकः
You are the Wind, you are Varuṇa, you are Fire, the universal burner.
मृत्युञ्जयो मृत्युमृत्युः कालकालो यमान्तकः ।। 4.38.
You are the conqueror of death, death unto death, time of time, the ender of Yama.
वेदस्त्वं वेदकर्ता च वेदवेदाङ्गपारगः
You are the Veda, the creator of the Veda, and the knower of the Veda and its limbs.
मन्त्रस्त्वं हि जपस्त्वं हि तपस्त्वं तत्फलप्रदः
You are the mantra, indeed the recitation, indeed the austerity, and the giver of its fruit.
अहो सरस्वतीबीजं कस्त्वां स्तोतुमिहेश्वरः
Ah, you are the seed of Sarasvatī; who, O Lord, is able to praise you here?
तत्रोवास तमाबोध्य चावरुह्य वृषाच्छिवः
There, having been awakened, Śiva descended from the bull and remained.
मुच्यते सर्वपापेभ्यो भयेभ्यश्च भवार्णवे
One is freed from all sins and from fears in the ocean of becoming.
भार्याहीनो लभेद्भार्यां सुशीलां सुमनोहराम्
A man without a wife obtains a virtuous and charming wife.
राज्यभ्रष्टो लभेद्राज्यं शंकरस्य प्रसादतः
One deprived of a kingdom regains a kingdom by the grace of Śaṃkara.
गभीरेऽतिजलाकीर्णे भग्नपोते विषादने
In deep waters, overwhelmed by great waves, with a broken boat, in despair—
सर्वतो मुच्यते स्तुत्वा शंकरस्य प्रसादतः
From all such situations one is freed by praising, through the grace of Śaṃkara.
इति स्तुत्वा हिमगिरिर्वसतः शङ्करस्य च
Having thus praised Himavat, who dwelt with Śaṅkara,
मधुपर्कादिकं तस्मै प्रददौ भक्तिपूर्वकम्
He offered to him madhuparka and other gifts with devoted reverence.
तदा तत्र समागत्य मेनका स्त्रीगणैः सह
Then Menakā arrived there, accompanied by groups of women.
ईषद्धास्यप्रसन्नास्यं वसन्तं व्याघ्रचर्मणि
She saw him, his face radiant with a gentle smile, seated upon the tiger skin.
