चकार मालामस्थ्नां च भस्मना तनुलेपनम्
She made a garland of bones and smeared her slender body with ashes.
सुषाव मेना तां देवीमतीव सुमनोहराम्

गुणप्रसूर्गुणान्सर्वान्सर्वरूपान्बिभर्त्ति सा
She, the source of all virtues, possesses all virtues and all forms.
बभूव वर्द्धमाना सा शुक्ले चन्द्रकला यथा
She grew, increasing like the bright digit of the moon.
बभूवाकाशवाणी च तां संबोध्य जगत्प्रसूम्
A voice from the sky addressed her, the mother of the world.
विनेश्वरं न तपसा प्राप्ता हि गर्भसम्भवम्
Without the Lord, she was not attained by austerity, but by birth in the womb.
मम जन्मान्तरीयं च भस्मास्थि च बिभर्ति यः
Whoever bears my former birth’s ashes and bones—
यो विदग्धश्च ब्रह्माण्डं बभ्राम मम शोकतः 4.38.
Who, distressed by my sorrow, wandered through the universe—
दक्षयज्ञं यो बभञ्ज मम हेतोः कृपानिधिः
Who, out of compassion for me, destroyed Daksha’s sacrifice—
या यस्य पत्नी यो यस्या भर्ता प्राक्तनतः पुरा
Whoever was whose wife, and whoever was whose husband, from former times—
सर्वरूपगुणाधारं मत्वा स्वमतिमानतः
Considering him the support of all forms and qualities, according to their own understanding—
सुन्दरीषु च सर्वासु मत्तो नास्त्येव सुन्दरी
Among all beautiful women, there is none more beautiful than me.
रूपयौवनवेषाणां पुमान्ग्राही स्वयोषिताम्
A man is captivated by the beauty, youth, and appearance of his own wife.
हृदीति मत्वा गिरिजा तस्थौ हिमगिरेर्गृहे
Thinking, 'He is in my heart,' Girijā remained in the house of the Lord of the Himalayas.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तूर्णं दूतः शैलेन्द्रसंसदि
Meanwhile, swiftly, a messenger arrived in the assembly of the King of Mountains.
दूत उवाच आजगाम महादेवः सगणो वृषवाहनः
The messenger said: 'The great Lord, Mahādeva, has come, along with his attendants, riding the bull.'
सिद्धिस्वरूपं सिद्धेशं योगीन्द्राणां गुरोर्गुरुम् 4.38.

The goddess, hearing the messenger's words, with a bright and cheerful face,
चकार वेषमतुलं दधार वस्त्रमुत्तमम्
Put on incomparable attire and donned the finest garments.
पारिजातप्रसूनानां मालां चन्दनसंयुताम्
She wore a garland of pārijāta flowers, mixed with sandalwood.
रत्नसिंहासनस्था सा ददर्श दर्पणे मुखम्
Seated on a jeweled throne, she gazed at her face in the mirror.
आरक्त नेत्रयुगलं निर्मलाञ्जनसंयुतम्
Her pair of eyes were reddish, adorned with pure collyrium.
सुकोमलौष्ठयुगुलं ताम्बूलरागसंयुतम्
Her pair of lips were soft and lovely, tinged with the red of betel.
रत्नकुंडलदीप्त्या च गंडस्थलविराजितम्
