बिभर्ति देहं सततं तव सौभाग्यवर्द्धनम्
She always bears a body that increases your good fortune.
अपूर्वं तव नैवेद्यं जन्ममृत्युजराहरम्
Your offering is unprecedented, removing birth, death, and old age.
लिङ्गोपरि च यद्दत्तं तदेवाग्राह्यमीश्वर
Whatever is offered upon the liṅga, O Lord, that alone is to be accepted.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा सा देवी देहं त्यक्तुं समुद्यता 4.37.
Having spoken thus, the goddess prepared to abandon her body.
शंकर उवाच ममापराधमखिलं क्षन्तुमर्हसि सुन्दरि
Śaṃkara said: You must forgive all my faults, O beautiful one.
मां भृत्यं तपसा क्रीतं कृपां कुरु ममोपरि
Show mercy to me, who am your servant, won by your austerities.
अहो गोलोकनाथस्थ गुणातीतस्य निर्गुणे
Ah! The Lord of Goloka, transcending qualities, is beyond all attributes.
साकारे च निराकारे नित्ये स्वेच्छामये प्रिये
He is both with form and formless, eternal, and acts according to his own will, O beloved.
सर्वबीजस्वरूपे च महामाये मनोहरे ४५ इच्छैव श्रीहरेः साक्षान्नाहं दातुमपि क्षमः
In the form of the seed of all, O enchanting great Māyā, even I am not able to grant the very wish of Śrī Hari himself.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा पुरतस्तस्थौ च चन्द्रशेखरः
Having spoken thus, Candraśekhara stood there before her.
इत्येवं पार्वतीस्तोत्रं शङ्करेण कृतं पुरा
Thus, in ancient times, this hymn to Pārvatī was composed by Śaṅkara.
मित्रभेदो भवेद् दूरं तत्संम्प्रीतिर्भवेत्पुरा
Enmity among friends is driven far away, and their mutual affection is restored as before.
श्रुत्वा प्रतिज्ञां नाथस्य परितुष्टा बभूव सा 4.37.
Hearing the Lord's promise, she became completely satisfied.
स्नात्वा संपूज्य भक्त्या च सुरमिष्टं च निर्गुणम्
After bathing and worshipping with devotion, she honored the desired, attributeless deity.
शिवः स्नात्वा च संपूज्य ब्रह्मज्योतिः सनातनम्
Śiva, having bathed and worshipped, honored the eternal Brahman-light.
गत्वा सर्वमहं भुक्त्वा तस्मै दत्त्वाऽभिवाञ्छितम्
Having gone and enjoyed all the great offerings, he gave her what she desired.
भुक्त्वाऽवशेषं सा देवी सह भर्त्रा मुदाऽन्विता
After enjoying what remained, that goddess, filled with joy, was together with her husband.
इत्येवं कथितं सर्वं त्वया पृष्टं सुरेश्वरि
Thus, O Queen of the gods, everything you asked has been told.
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच अधुना श्रूयतां मत्तो दुर्गादर्पविमोचनम्
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: Now hear from me about the removal of Durgā's pride.
तेजसा सर्वदेवानामाविर्भूय जगत्प्रसूः
She, the mother of the world, appeared from the brilliance of all the gods.
निहत्य दानवेन्द्रांश्च ररक्ष देवताकुलम्
Having slain the chiefs of the demons, she protected the host of gods.
पिनाकपाणिं जग्राह सा देवी सुरसाधनम्
That goddess took up the Pināka bow, the divine weapon.
दक्षेण सार्द्धं देवेन बभूव शिवशत्रुता
Together with Dakṣa, enmity arose with Śiva.
दक्षश्चकार यज्ञं च तत आगत्य कोपतः
Dakṣa performed a sacrifice, and then, coming there in anger...
सस्त्रीका देवताः सर्वा आजग्मुर्दक्षमन्दिरम्
All the deities, along with their wives, came to the house of Daksha.
सती पतिं च मोहेन बोधयामास यत्नतः
Sati, overcome by delusion, earnestly tried to persuade her husband.
आजगाम पितुर्गेहं दर्पात्तस्य विनाऽऽज्ञया
Out of pride, she went to her father's house without his permission.
न हि संभाषणं चक्रे वाङ्मात्रेण पिता च ताम् 4.38.
Her father did not speak to her, not even a single word.
एवं प्रिये निगदितं सतीदर्पविमोचनम्
Thus, beloved, has been told the release of Sati's pride.
लेभे जन्म सती शीघ्रं जठरे शैलयोषितः
Sati quickly took birth in the womb of the mountain maiden.
