प्रथमे ब्रह्मणो गर्वो मया चूर्णीकृतः श्रुतः
At first, Brahma's pride was shattered by me, as is well known.
वह्नेर्दुर्वाससश्चैव तथा धन्वन्तरेः प्रिये
So too, that of Agni, Durvasa, and Dhanvantari, dear one.
क्षुद्राणां महतां चैव येषां गर्वो भवेत्प्रिये 4.36.
O dear one, whether among the lowly or the great, whoever becomes proud—
पप्रच्छ राधा यत्नेन संत्रस्ता भयविह्वला
Radha anxiously and fearfully questioned him with great effort.
त्वया केन प्रभावेण तस्य भङ्गः कृतः पुरा
By what power of yours was his pride broken in the past?
कथयस्व प्राणनाथ सर्वेषां दर्पभञ्जन
Tell me, Lord of my life, destroyer of all pride.
अन्येषां श्रूयतां राधे व्यासेन कथयामि ते
Listen, O Radha, I will tell you about others as well, as narrated by Vyasa.
स्वयं शिवो मदंशश्च संहर्ता जगतां च यः
Shiva himself, who is a portion of intoxication and the destroyer of worlds—
ध्यायन्ति योगिनो यं स योगीन्द्राणां गुरोर्गुरुः
He whom yogis meditate upon, who is the guru of the gurus of the lords of yogis—
युगषष्टिसहस्राणि तपस्तप्त्वा दिवानिशम्
For sixty thousand yugas, he performed austerities day and night.
तपसा तेजसा शश्वत्तेजोराशिर्बभूव ह
Through austerity and radiance, he became an eternal mass of brilliance.
शुद्धस्फटिकसंकाशं पञ्चवक्त्रं त्रिलोचनम् 4.36.
He appeared like pure crystal, with five faces and three eyes.
जपन्तं स्वात्मनाऽऽत्मानं श्वेताब्जबीजमालया
Chanting, he contemplated himself with the garland of white lotus seeds.
स्वर्णाकारं जटाभारं दधतं शिरसा मुदा
He bore on his head, with joy, matted locks of golden appearance.
अथ स्वमीश्वरं मत्वा प्रदाता सर्वसंपदाम्
Then, recognizing his own Lord, the bestower of all prosperity,
यो यं वाञ्छति तं तस्मै वरं दत्त्वा वरेश्वरः
The Lord of boons grants to each what they desire.
एकदा च वृको दैत्यस्तपस्तेपे शिवस्य च
Once, the demon Vṛka performed austerity for Śiva.
नित्यं याति तत्समीपं कृपया च कृपानिधिः
The ocean of compassion would always approach him out of mercy.
वर्षान्ते शङ्करः शश्वत्तस्थौ तत्पुरतः स्वयम्
At the end of the year, Śaṅkara himself stood before him.
सर्वैश्वर्यं सर्वसिद्धिं भुक्तिं मुक्तिं हरः पदम्
Hara grants all sovereignty, all accomplishments, enjoyment, liberation, and his own abode.
ध्यायमानं तत्पदाब्जं दृष्ट्वा त्रस्तो महेश्वरः
Seeing him meditating on that lotus-like foot, Maheśvara became afraid.
अतीव रोदनात्तस्य ध्यानभङ्गो बभूव ह 4.36.
Because of his intense weeping, his meditation was broken.
यन्मायया वरं वव्रे दैत्येन्द्रो भक्तिपूर्वकम्
By his own illusion, the lord of demons requested a boon with devotion.
ओमित्युक्त्वा प्रयान्तं तं दुद्राव दैत्यपुंगवः
Uttering 'Om,' as he departed, the foremost of demons pursued him.
पपात डमरुस्तस्य व्याघ्रचर्म मनोहरम्
His drum fell, and his tiger skin, enchanting to behold.
न हन्ति तं च कृपया भक्तं च भक्तवत्सलः
Out of compassion, the lover of devotees does not harm him, his devotee.
साधवो घ्नन्ति घ्नन्तं च भृत्यं पुत्रं प्रियां विना
The virtuous do not strike a servant, son, or beloved, even if they strike them.
शिवः स्वमृत्युं मत्वा च भीतश्च निरहंकृतः
Śiva, considering his own death and being afraid, became free of pride.
दृष्ट्वा स्वाश्रममायान्तं शुष्ककण्ठोष्ठतालुकम्
Seeing him coming to his own hermitage, his throat, lips, and palate parched,
संस्थाप्य तत्समीपे च स दैत्यो बोधितो मया
I made that demon sit nearby and awakened him.
