दुःखबीजं सुखं मत्वा मूढाश्च दैवदोषतः 4.35.
Fools, due to fate, mistake the seed of suffering for happiness.
उत्तमा मत्पदाम्भोजं सत्कर्म मध्यमाः सदा
The best fix their minds on my lotus feet; those of middling quality always perform good deeds.
विपत्तिः संततं तस्य परवस्तुषु यन्मनः
Constant misfortune comes to one whose mind is set on others' possessions.
दैवात्परस्त्रियं दृष्ट्वा विरमेद्यो हरिं स्मरन्
By fate, seeing another's wife, one should restrain himself, remembering Hari.
सततं नैव संसक्ताः सन्तः स्वस्त्रीषु कामतः
The virtuous are never constantly attached to their own wives out of desire.
तपस्विनस्तपस्यायां शास्त्रचिन्तासु पण्डिताः
Ascetics are devoted to austerity, scholars to reflection on scripture.
साध्यश्च पतिसेवासु गृहस्था गृहकर्मसु
Householders are accomplished in serving their husbands and in household duties.
एते नियुक्ता एतेषु सभासु च प्रशंसिताः
These are engaged in these respective duties and are praised in assemblies.
सर्वे नित्यं प्रशंसन्ति शश्वत्सन्मार्गगामिनम्
All always praise the one who constantly follows the path of virtue.
भविता न परस्त्रीषु परवस्तुषु ते मनः
Your mind will not dwell on other women or others' possessions.
मदीयविषये बाह्ये मया दत्तं कुरु प्रियम् 4.35.
In my domain and outside, do what is dear to me, as I have instructed.
कन्या भवतु मे ब्रह्मन्कामदेवस्य कामिनी
Let the maiden become, O Brahman, the beloved of Kāma, the god of love.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा ब्रह्माणमाश्वास्य कमलापतिः
Having thus spoken, the Lord of Lakshmi comforted Brahma.
कथं स कुलटाशापादपूज्यः संबभूव ह
How did he become unworthy of worship because of the curse of the unchaste woman?
कथं तस्य दर्पभङ्गं चकार कमलापतिः
How did the Lord of Lakshmi break his pride?
श्रीनारायण उवाच रासेश्वरीवचः श्रुत्वा प्रहस्य रसिकेश्वरः
Shri Narayana said: Hearing the words of the Queen of the Rasa dance, the Lord of the Rasa smiled.
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच ब्रह्मा चिरं तपस्तप्त्वा मत्तो लब्ध्वा वरं वरम्
Shri Krishna said: Brahma, after performing austerities for a long time, obtained a supreme boon from me.
तपसां फलदाता च सर्वेषां शास्तिकृत्प्रभुः
He is the giver of the fruits of austerities and the lord who establishes rules for all.
ब्रह्माण्डेषु च सर्वेषु गर्वपर्यन्तमुन्नतिः
In all the universes, his exaltation reached the limit of pride.
येषां येषां भवेद्दर्पो ब्रह्माण्डेषु परात्परः
Among all those in the universes who become proud, he is the supreme among the supreme.
प्रथमे ब्रह्मणो गर्वो मया चूर्णीकृतः श्रुतः
At first, Brahma's pride was shattered by me, as is well known.
वह्नेर्दुर्वाससश्चैव तथा धन्वन्तरेः प्रिये
So too, that of Agni, Durvasa, and Dhanvantari, dear one.
क्षुद्राणां महतां चैव येषां गर्वो भवेत्प्रिये 4.36.
O dear one, whether among the lowly or the great, whoever becomes proud—
पप्रच्छ राधा यत्नेन संत्रस्ता भयविह्वला
Radha anxiously and fearfully questioned him with great effort.
त्वया केन प्रभावेण तस्य भङ्गः कृतः पुरा
By what power of yours was his pride broken in the past?
कथयस्व प्राणनाथ सर्वेषां दर्पभञ्जन
Tell me, Lord of my life, destroyer of all pride.
अन्येषां श्रूयतां राधे व्यासेन कथयामि ते
Listen, O Radha, I will tell you about others as well, as narrated by Vyasa.
स्वयं शिवो मदंशश्च संहर्ता जगतां च यः
Shiva himself, who is a portion of intoxication and the destroyer of worlds—
ध्यायन्ति योगिनो यं स योगीन्द्राणां गुरोर्गुरुः
He whom yogis meditate upon, who is the guru of the gurus of the lords of yogis—
युगषष्टिसहस्राणि तपस्तप्त्वा दिवानिशम्
For sixty thousand yugas, he performed austerities day and night.
