प्राणत्यागात्परं दुःखमयशश्च यशस्विनाम् ।। 4.35.
After the departure of the breath, there is only suffering for the illustrious.
कन्या तातं मृतं दृष्ट्वा विलप्य च भृशं मुहुः
The daughter, seeing her father dead, lamented intensely again and again.
मृतं तातं च भगिनीं दृष्ट्वा च मुनिपुंगवाः
The eminent sages, seeing the dead father and the sister,
नारायणो मदंशश्च कृपयाऽऽगत्य सत्वरम्
Narayana, along with my portion, quickly came out of compassion.
ब्रह्मा पुरो हरिं दृष्ट्वा वरं वव्रे स्म वाञ्छितम्
Brahma, seeing Hari before him, chose the desired boon.
ब्रह्माणं विरसं दृष्ट्वा तमुवाच कृपानिधिः
Seeing Brahma dispirited, the ocean of mercy spoke to him.
श्रीनारायण उवाच त्यज लज्जां जगन्नाथ हृदयज्वररूपिणीम्
Shri Narayana said: Abandon shame, O Lord of the world, which takes the form of fever in the heart.
सत्कीर्तिरपकीर्तिर्वा सुप्रतिष्ठाप्युपद्रवः
Whether it is good reputation or ill repute, firm establishment or disturbance,
सर्वेषामपि सर्वेभ्यः स्वकर्म बलवत्तरम्
For all, and above all, one's own karma is the strongest.
केचित्कुर्वन्ति निर्मूलं सर्वेषामपि कर्मणाम्
Some make the karma of all completely fruitless.
कुकर्मणश्चापकीर्तिस्ततो लज्जा भवेद्ध्रुवम् 4.35.
From evil deeds comes ill repute, and from that, shame certainly arises.
कालेन रजसा देहो बलं रूपं शुभाशुभम्
By time and passion, the body, strength, beauty, auspicious and inauspicious things,
ऋणव्रणापवादाश्च जन्तूनां यान्ति कालतः
Debts, wounds, and slanders of beings depart with time.
सदाऽपकीर्तिर्वसति परस्त्रीषु च वस्तुषु
Ill repute always dwells among other men's wives and possessions.
स्मर मामन्तरे ब्राह्मे मदीयं विषयं कुरु
Remember me within the heart, and make my domain your focus.
योषिद्रूपा च मे माया सर्वेषां मोहकारिणी
My māyā takes the form of a woman and causes delusion for all.
नानामुद्राश्रये देशे रागिणो संततं रतिः
In various lands, those attached to pleasure are always devoted to enjoyment.
श्रोणिवक्त्रस्तनं तासां कामदेवालयं सदा
The hips, face, and breasts of women are always the abode of Kāma, the god of desire.
को धर्मः किं यशस्तेषां का प्रतिष्ठा च किं तपः
What is righteousness for them? What is fame, what is status, and what is austerity?
इहाप्यपयशो दुःखं नरकेषु परत्र च
Even here there is disgrace and suffering, and in hell and beyond as well.
दुःखबीजं सुखं मत्वा मूढाश्च दैवदोषतः 4.35.
Fools, due to fate, mistake the seed of suffering for happiness.
उत्तमा मत्पदाम्भोजं सत्कर्म मध्यमाः सदा
The best fix their minds on my lotus feet; those of middling quality always perform good deeds.
विपत्तिः संततं तस्य परवस्तुषु यन्मनः
Constant misfortune comes to one whose mind is set on others' possessions.
दैवात्परस्त्रियं दृष्ट्वा विरमेद्यो हरिं स्मरन्
By fate, seeing another's wife, one should restrain himself, remembering Hari.
सततं नैव संसक्ताः सन्तः स्वस्त्रीषु कामतः
The virtuous are never constantly attached to their own wives out of desire.
तपस्विनस्तपस्यायां शास्त्रचिन्तासु पण्डिताः
Ascetics are devoted to austerity, scholars to reflection on scripture.
साध्यश्च पतिसेवासु गृहस्था गृहकर्मसु
Householders are accomplished in serving their husbands and in household duties.
एते नियुक्ता एतेषु सभासु च प्रशंसिताः
These are engaged in these respective duties and are praised in assemblies.
सर्वे नित्यं प्रशंसन्ति शश्वत्सन्मार्गगामिनम्
All always praise the one who constantly follows the path of virtue.
भविता न परस्त्रीषु परवस्तुषु ते मनः
Your mind will not dwell on other women or others' possessions.
