ऋषय ऊचुः नीचानां चरितं यत्तत्करोषि त्वं जगद्विधे ।। 4.35.
The sages said: You, creator of the world, are acting as the lowly do.
पश्यन्ति सततं सन्तः प्रसूमिव परस्त्रियम्
The virtuous always see another’s wife as they would a mother.
त्वं स्वयं वेदकर्ता च कन्यां संभोक्तुमिच्छसि
You, who made the Vedas yourself, desire to enjoy your own daughter.
गुरोः पत्नी राजपत्नी विप्रपत्नी च या सती
The wife of the teacher, the wife of a king, the wife of a Brahmin, who is virtuous,
प्रसूः पित्रोस्तथा भ्रातुः पत्नी श्वश्रूः स्वकन्यकाः
The mother, the wife of one’s father, the wife of one’s brother, the mother-in-law, one’s own daughter,
स्वाभीष्टसुरपत्नी च धात्रिकाऽन्नप्रदायिका
The wife of one’s chosen god, the nurse, the one who gives food,
एता वेदप्रणीताश्च सर्वेषां मातरः स्मृताः
These, established by the Vedas, are all remembered as mothers for everyone.
कन्यादाताऽन्नदाता च ज्ञानदाताऽभयप्रदः
The giver of a daughter, the giver of food, the giver of knowledge, the giver of fearlessness,
एता वहन्ति ये मूढा य एताञ्जनकानपि
Those fools who violate these, and those who violate their fathers as well,
तानन्धकूपे संस्थाप्य दूरतो यमकिङ्कराः
The servants of Yama place them in a pit of darkness, far away.
त्वमेव विश्वकर्ता च शास्ता वै शमनस्य च 4.35.
You alone are the maker of the universe, the teacher, and the lord of restraint.
अस्माकं पुरतो दूरं गच्छ कामार्तमानस
Go far from us, whose minds are afflicted by desire.
गुरोर्दोषसहस्राणि क्षन्तुमर्हन्ति पण्डिताः
The wise are able to forgive thousands of faults of the teacher.
गृह्णन्ति यदि सर्वस्वं शपन्तं निष्ठुरं गुरुम्
If they accept everything from a teacher who curses harshly,
ये द्विषन्ति च निन्दति गुरुमिष्टं सुरात्परम्
Those who hate and revile the teacher, who is dearer than the gods,
पुरीषं भुञ्जते नित्यं क्षुभिता यमताडनैः
They eat filth always, tormented by the punishments of Yama.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा मुनयः प्रणेमुस्तत्पदाम्बुजम्
Having spoken thus, the sages bowed to those lotus feet.
उन्मुखा मुनयः सर्वे बभूवुश्च स्वकर्मणि
All the sages became attentive and returned to their own duties.
योगेन भित्त्वा षट्चक्रं सर्वान्प्राणान्निरुद्ध्य च
By yoga, piercing the six chakras and restraining all the vital airs,
मनसा श्रीहरिं स्मृत्वा नमस्कारं चकार ह
Remembering Shri Hari in their minds, they offered salutations.
प्राणत्यागात्परं दुःखमयशश्च यशस्विनाम् ।। 4.35.
After the departure of the breath, there is only suffering for the illustrious.
कन्या तातं मृतं दृष्ट्वा विलप्य च भृशं मुहुः
The daughter, seeing her father dead, lamented intensely again and again.
मृतं तातं च भगिनीं दृष्ट्वा च मुनिपुंगवाः
The eminent sages, seeing the dead father and the sister,
नारायणो मदंशश्च कृपयाऽऽगत्य सत्वरम्
Narayana, along with my portion, quickly came out of compassion.
ब्रह्मा पुरो हरिं दृष्ट्वा वरं वव्रे स्म वाञ्छितम्
Brahma, seeing Hari before him, chose the desired boon.
ब्रह्माणं विरसं दृष्ट्वा तमुवाच कृपानिधिः
Seeing Brahma dispirited, the ocean of mercy spoke to him.
श्रीनारायण उवाच त्यज लज्जां जगन्नाथ हृदयज्वररूपिणीम्
Shri Narayana said: Abandon shame, O Lord of the world, which takes the form of fever in the heart.
सत्कीर्तिरपकीर्तिर्वा सुप्रतिष्ठाप्युपद्रवः
Whether it is good reputation or ill repute, firm establishment or disturbance,
सर्वेषामपि सर्वेभ्यः स्वकर्म बलवत्तरम्
For all, and above all, one's own karma is the strongest.
केचित्कुर्वन्ति निर्मूलं सर्वेषामपि कर्मणाम्
Some make the karma of all completely fruitless.
