Śrī Krishna said: It is unspeakable, to be kept secret, and condemned by the great.
Once, the Creator, prompted by me, set out to create beings.
Sanaka, Sananda, Sanātana, and the unsurpassed one,
Asita, Kapila, the accomplished Siddha—these were born in my lineage.
To create beings, he appointed as progenitors these and others as well.
Then, the Lord of the world, angered, created sons again.
With force, he again produced sons at that time.
Vasiṣṭha, Pulaha, Kratu, and Aṅgiras as well,
Having created Marīci too, he appointed them to create beings.
From Krishna, the passionate one, was born a son—Kāmadeva.
Then the Creator spoke to his son, who stood before him, shining brightly.
Brahmā said: By the power of delight, you shall preside over all.
You will cause enchantment, agitation, and the obstruction of seed.
Take these, which I have given you—enchant them all.
Having given the arrows and spoken thus, the Creator of the world rejoiced.
Meanwhile, Kāma, reflecting in his mind and consulting,
With arrows purified by mantra, irresistible by remembrance,
In a moment, regaining consciousness, he saw a maiden before him.
Then, seeing their father running, bereft of consciousness,
They placed her nearby and spoke to their father in anger,
The sages said: You, creator of the world, are acting as the lowly do.
The virtuous always see another’s wife as they would a mother.
You, who made the Vedas yourself, desire to enjoy your own daughter.
The wife of the teacher, the wife of a king, the wife of a Brahmin, who is virtuous,
The mother, the wife of one’s father, the wife of one’s brother, the mother-in-law, one’s own daughter,
The wife of one’s chosen god, the nurse, the one who gives food,
These, established by the Vedas, are all remembered as mothers for everyone.
The giver of a daughter, the giver of food, the giver of knowledge, the giver of fearlessness,
Those fools who violate these, and those who violate their fathers as well,
The servants of Yama place them in a pit of darkness, far away.
