कारागारेऽपि बद्धो यो नैव प्राप्नोति निर्वृतिम् 1.19.
Even one bound in prison does not attain contentment.
भ्रष्टराज्यो लभेद्राज्यं भक्त्या मासं शृणोति यः
He whose kingdom is lost regains his kingdom if he listens with devotion for a month.
यक्ष्मग्रस्तो वर्षमेकमास्तिको यः शृणोति चेत्
If a faithful person afflicted with consumption listens for one year—
यः शृणोति सदा भक्त्या स्तवराजमिमं द्विज
O twice-born, whoever always listens with devotion to this king of hymns—
कदाचिद्बन्धुविच्छेदो न भवेत्तस्य भारते
Separation from relatives never occurs for him, O descendant of Bharata.
सुसंयतोऽतिभक्त्या च मासमेकं शृणोति यः
He who is well-disciplined and listens with great devotion for one month—
महामूर्खश्च दुर्मेधा मासमेकं शृणोति यः
Even a great fool, lacking intelligence, who listens for one month—
कर्मदुःखी दरिद्रश्च मासं भक्त्या शृणोति यः
One who is afflicted by the pain of actions, or poor, who listens with devotion for a month—
इह लोके सुखं भुक्त्वा कृत्वा कीर्तिं सुदुर्लभाम्
Enjoys happiness in this world and attains fame that is most difficult to obtain.
पार्षदप्रवरो भूत्वा सेवते तत्र शङ्करम्
Becoming an exalted attendant, he serves Śaṅkara there.
सौतिरुवाच रेमे कालावशेषं च ताभिश्च निर्जने वने
Sūta said: He spent the remainder of his time with them in the secluded forest.
गन्धर्वराजो मुमुदे पुत्रदारादिभिः सह
The king of the Gandharvas rejoiced together with his sons, wives, and others.
राजत्वं बुभुजे राजा कुबेरभवनोपमे
The king enjoyed his reign, which was comparable to the abode of Kubera.
गन्धर्वराजः काले च गङ्गातीरे मनोहरे
The king of the Gandharvas, in due course, on the charming bank of the Gaṅgā—
शैवः शिवप्रसादेन पुत्रस्य विष्णुसेवया
A devotee of Śiva, by Śiva’s grace and by his son’s service to Viṣṇu—
कृत्वा पित्रोश्च सत्कारं गन्धर्वश्चोपबर्हणः
Having honored his parents, the Gandharva Upabarhaṇa—
काले स्वयं ब्रह्मशापात्प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा विचक्षणः
In time, due to Brahmā’s curse, the wise one gave up his life.
मालावती वह्निकुण्डे पुष्करे भारते भुवि
Mālāvatī entered the fire-pit at Puṣkara on the land of Bhārata.
सृंजयस्य तु पत्न्यां च मनुवंशोद्भवस्य च
And in the wife of Sṛñjaya, who was born of the lineage of Manu—
उपबर्हणगन्धर्वः पतिर्मे भवितेति च 1.20.
The Gandharva Upabarhaṇa became my husband.
शौनक उवाच जातः केन प्रकारेण तद्भवान्वक्तुमर्हति
Śaunaka said: By what means was he born? You ought to tell us that.
सौतिरुवाच कलावती तस्य पत्नी वन्ध्या चापि पतिव्रता
Sūta said: Kalāvatī, his wife, was childless but devoted to her husband.
स्वामिदोषेण सा वन्ध्या काले च भर्तुराज्ञया
Because of her husband’s fault, she was barren; and in time, by her husband’s command—
ध्यायमानं च श्रीकृष्णं ज्वलन्तं ब्रह्मतेजसा
She meditated on Śrī Kṛṣṇa, blazing with the radiance of Brahman.
ग्रीष्ममध्याह्नमार्तण्डप्रभातुल्येन तेजसा
With radiance equal to the midday sun in the height of summer,
ध्यानान्ते च मुनिश्रेष्ठः परः कृष्णपरायणः
At the end of his meditation, the best of sages, wholly devoted to Krishna,
चारुचम्पकवर्णाभां शरत्पङ्कजलोचनाम्
Saw a woman with a lovely complexion like champaka flowers and eyes like autumn lotuses,
बृहन्नितम्बभारार्त्तां पीनश्रोणिपयोधराम्
Her broad hips burdened her, her thighs and breasts were full,
मोहितां मुनिरूपेण कामबाणप्रपीडिताम्
She was enchanted, taking the form of a sage, tormented by the arrows of desire,
सिन्दूरबिन्दुभूषाढ्यां सुचारुकज्जलोज्ज्वलाम् 1.20.
Adorned with a dot of vermilion and shining with beautiful, bright kohl.
