का कस्य पत्नी कः कान्तः कस्या वा भुवनत्रये
Who is whose wife? Who is beloved to whom in the three worlds?
मिथ्या पत्नी तवेयं च क्षणात्तेन गताधुना 4.24.
This woman whom you call your wife is an illusion; she has departed from you in a moment.
एकानंशा च भगिनी वसुदेवसुता हरेः
She is the partial manifestation, the sister, the daughter of Vasudeva, of Hari.
कल्पे कल्पे सुन्दरी सा तव पत्नी भविष्यति
In every age, that beautiful one will become your wife.
कन्दली कदलीजातिर्भविष्यति महीतले
On earth, she will be born as a plantain, of the banana family.
कल्पान्तरे शान्तरूपा तव पत्नी भविष्य ति
In another age, with a peaceful form, she will become your wife.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा शीघ्रं च विप्ररूपी जनार्दनः
Having thus spoken, Janardana, taking the form of a brahmin, swiftly departed.
मुनिः सर्वभ्रमं त्यक्त्वा तपस्यायां मनो दधे
The sage, abandoning all confusion, fixed his mind on austerity.
दैत्यस्तालवनं गत्वा बभूव गर्दभाकृतिः
The demon, going to the Tāla forest, took the form of a donkey.
दैत्येन्द्रो विष्णुचक्रेण प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा सुवाञ्छितम्
The lord of the demons, struck by Vishnu's discus, gave up his life as he wished.
काले तिलोत्तमा भूत्वा जगाम स्वालयं पुनः
In time, becoming Tilottamā, she returned again to her own abode.
इत्येवं कथितं श्रुत्वा श्रीकृष्णाख्यानमुत्तमम् 4.24.
Thus, having heard this excellent story of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, as it was told.
विशेषतस्तव मुखे ह्यतीव सुमनोहरम्
Especially, your face is exceedingly charming.
मृतायां मुनिकन्यायां शापाद्दुर्वाससो मुनेः
When the sage's daughter died, it was due to the curse of the sage Durvāsas.
पपात धौतमूर्ध्वाच्च धार्यमाणं च वायुना
It fell, cleansed and raised, while being held aloft by the wind.
पृथिव्यां पतिते वस्त्रे तपस्त्यक्त्वा मुनीश्वरः
When the cloth fell to the earth, the great sage abandoned his austerity.
जगाम शोकाविष्टोऽपि तूर्णं जामातुराश्रमम्
Though overcome by grief, he swiftly went to his son-in-law’s hermitage.
गत्वाऽऽलयसमीपं च विप्रः कातरमानसः
Having reached near the dwelling, the Brahmin’s mind was filled with fear.
श्वशरस्य स्वरं ज्ञात्वा दुर्वासा भयविह्वलः
Recognizing his father-in-law’s voice, Durvasa was seized by terror.
प्रणम्य श्वशुरं शोकाद्विललाप भृशं पुनः
He bowed to his father-in-law and, overwhelmed by sorrow, lamented greatly again.
श्रुत्वा वार्तां शुचाऽऽविष्टः पपात धरणीतले
Hearing the news, afflicted by grief, he collapsed upon the ground.
मृतं दृष्ट्वा स दुर्वासा मुने मनसि संकटम् 4.25.
Seeing the dead, Durvasa the sage felt distress in his heart.
संप्राप्य चेतनां शीघ्रमुवाच तं पुरः स्थितम्
Regaining consciousness quickly, he spoke to the one standing before him.
महाशोकादश्रुपूर्णं रक्तपङ्कजलोचनम्
Filled with great sorrow, his eyes were full of tears and stained with red.
और्व उवाच स्वल्पदोषे बहुतरः कृतो दण्डस्त्वया कथम्
Aurva said: For a slight fault, you have imposed a very severe punishment—how is this?
त्वज्जन्म शंकरांशेन शिष्यस्तस्य जगद्गुरोः
Your birth is from a portion of Śaṅkara, and you are the disciple of that teacher of the world.
अनसूया महासाध्वी कमलांशा तव प्रसूः
Anasūyā, the great virtuous woman, is your mother, born from a portion of Kamalā.
गुणवाञ्जनको यस्य माता गुणवती सती
One whose mother is virtuous and chaste, whose father is endowed with virtues.
मम प्राणाधिका कन्या मुदा त्वयि समर्पिता
My daughter, dearer to me than life, was joyfully given to you.
वाग्दुष्टायाश्च दण्डो हि परित्यागः श्रुतौ श्रुतः
For a woman whose speech is faulty, the punishment is abandonment, as heard in the scriptures.
