इत्येवमुक्त्वा दुर्वासा विरराम मुनेः पुरः
Having spoken thus, Durvasa ceased in the presence of the sage.
स्वस्तीत्युवाच दुर्वासा मुनिश्च यौतुकं ददौ 4.24.
Durvasa said, 'May it be well,' and the sage gave the marriage gift.
मूर्च्छामवाप स मुनिः स्वकन्याविरहातुरः
The sage fell unconscious, distressed by separation from his own daughter.
क्षणेन चेतनां प्राप्य बोधयामास कन्यकाम्
Regaining consciousness in a moment, he awakened his daughter.
और्व उवाच हितं सत्यं च वेदोक्तं परिणामसुखावहम्
Aurva said: That which is beneficial, true, and spoken in the Vedas brings happiness in the end.
स्वकान्तश्च परो बन्धुरिह लोके परत्र च
One's own beloved and another's friend exist in this world and the next.
देवपूजा व्रतं दानं तपश्चानशनं जपः
Worship of the gods, vows, charity, austerity, fasting, and recitation—
प्रादक्षिण्यं पृथिव्याश्च ब्राह्मणातिथिसेवनम्
Circumambulation of the earth and service to Brahmins and guests—
किमेतैः पतिभक्ताया अभक्तायाश्च भारते पतिसेवा परो धर्मः सर्वशास्त्रेषु पठ्यते
What is the use of these for a devoted or unfaithful wife, O Bharata? Service to the husband is the highest duty, as taught in all scriptures.
स्वप्रज्ञानेन सततं कान्तं नारायणाधिकम्
By her own discernment, a wife should always regard her husband as not less than Narayana.
परिहासेन कोपेन भ्रमेणावज्ञया मुने
O sage, whether in jest, in anger, in confusion, or with contempt—
स्त्रिया वाग्योनिदुष्टायाः कामतो भारते भुवि 4.24.
if a woman, whose speech or nature is impure, speaks out of desire on the land of Bharata—
सर्वधर्मपरीता या कटूक्तिं कुरुते पतिम्
she who is devoid of all righteousness and utters harsh words to her husband—
दत्त्वा कन्यां बोधयित्वा जगाम मुनिपुंगवः
Having given away the maiden and instructed her, the eminent sage departed.
सम्भोगेच्छावृते चित्ते कामी संप्राप कामिनीम्
With his mind filled with desire for union, the passionate one obtained a passionate woman.
शय्यां रतिकरीं कृत्वा मुनिश्रेष्ठो महामुने
Having made the bed fit for pleasure, the best of sages, O great sage—
नारीरसानभिज्ञः स्यादाजन्म मुनिपुंगवः
the eminent sage, unacquainted with the pleasures of women since birth—
नानाप्रकारं शृङ्गारं चकार विधिपूर्वकम्
performed various kinds of love-play, according to prescribed rules.
मूर्च्छां प्राप मुनिश्रेष्ठो बुबुधे न दिवानिशम्
The best of sages fell unconscious and was unaware of day and night.
विदग्धाया विदग्धेन बभूव संगमः समः
Between the clever woman and the clever man, the union was equal.
करोति कलहे नित्यं कन्दली स्वामिना सह सा तन्न बुबुधे किंचित्करोति कलहे स्पृहाम्
Kandalī always quarrels with her husband; she did not realize anything, but she desired to quarrel.
तातप्रदत्तज्ञानेन सा न शान्ता बभूव ह 4.24.
With the knowledge given by her father, she did not become peaceful.
नित्यं कटूक्तिं कान्तं सा करोति हेतुना विना
She always utters harsh words to her beloved, without any reason.
तया कृतां कटूक्तिं च क्षमासंस्थां चकार ह
For the harsh words spoken by her, he maintained patience.
कटूक्तिशतकं पूर्णं तत्कालेन बभूव ह
In time, a hundred harsh words were completed.
पत्नीकटूक्त्या नियतं प्रदग्धं मानसं मुनेः
By the wife's harsh words, the mind of the sage was certainly burned.
स्वात्मारामो दयालुश्च कोपं त्यक्तुं न स क्षमः
Though self-content and compassionate, he was unable to give up his anger.
मुनेरिङ्गितमात्रेण भस्मसात्सा बभूव ह
By a mere gesture of the sage, she was reduced to ashes.
शरीरे भस्मसाद्भूते प्रतिबिंबः स चात्मनः
When the body has become ashes, the reflection of the self remains.
जीव उवाच सर्वं जानासि सर्वज्ञः किमहं बोधयामि ते
Jīva said: You know everything, O omniscient one; what can I possibly explain to you?
