तिलोत्तमे भारते त्वं बाणपुत्री भविष्यसि
Tilottama, in Bharata you shall become the daughter of Bana.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा स मुनिर्विरराम महामुने
Having spoken thus, the sage became silent, O great sage.
इत्युक्तं सर्ववृत्तान्तं दैत्यस्य खरजन्मनः 4.23.
Thus has the entire story of the Daitya born as a donkey been told.
नारायण उवाच अहोऽस्य दारसंयोगः कथं तदूर्ध्वरेतसः
Narāyaṇa said: How did he, who had taken the vow of celibacy, come to have a wife?
दृष्ट्वा तयोश्च शृङ्गारं मुनिः कामी बभूव ह
Seeing their amorous union, the sage became filled with desire.
सहसा तस्य हृदये बभूव सुरते स्पृहा
Suddenly, a longing for intercourse arose in his heart.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तेन पथा याति मुनीश्वरः
At that very moment, the great sage was traveling along that path.
ऊरूद्भवो ब्रह्मणश्च पुरा कल्पे तपस्यतः
Born from the thigh of Brahmā in a previous age, while he was engaged in austerities,
तस्य जानूद्भवा कन्या कन्दली नाम विश्रुता
A daughter was born from his knee, renowned by the name Kandalī.
ससुतो हि मुनिश्रेष्ठो मुनेर्दुर्वाससः पुरः
That foremost sage, accompanied by his son, stood before the sage Durvāsas.
मुनीन्द्रोऽपि मुनीन्द्रं तं पुरो दृष्ट्वा ससंभ्रमः
The lord of sages, upon seeing that sage before him, became agitated.
और्वो दुर्वाससं तत्र समाश्लिष्य मुदाऽन्वितः
Aurva joyfully embraced Durvāsas there.
और्व उवाच प्रौढा त्वामेव ध्यायन्ती श्रुत्वा वाचिकवक्त्रतः ।। 4.24.
Aurva said: 'She, now mature, constantly meditates upon you, having heard your words from the mouth of speech.'
अयोनिसम्भवा कन्या त्रैलोक्यं मोहितुं क्षमा
This maiden, not born from a womb, is capable of deluding the three worlds.
अतीव कलहाविष्टा कोपेन कटुभाषिणी
She is exceedingly quarrelsome, harsh in speech due to anger.
और्वस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा हर्षशोकान्वितो मुनिः
Hearing Aurva's words, the sage was filled with both joy and sorrow.
शरत्पार्वणचन्द्रास्यां शरत्पङ्कजलोचनाम्
Her face was like the autumn full moon, her eyes like autumn lotuses.
नवयौवनसंयुक्तां पश्यन्तीं वक्रचक्षुषा
She was endowed with fresh youth, gazing with sidelong glances.
मुनिर्मुमोह तां दृष्ट्वा कामबाणप्रपीडितः
The sage, struck by the arrows of desire, became deluded upon seeing her.
दुर्वासा उवाच व्यवधानं तपस्यायाः सततं मोहकारणम्
Durvāsas said: 'Obstruction to austerity is always the cause of delusion.'
कारागारे च संसारे दुर्वहं निगडं परम्
In the prison of worldly existence, the most grievous fetter is indeed hard to bear.
सङ्गिच्छायातिरिक्तं च कर्मभोगात्परात्परम्
Beyond the enjoyment of actions, only the desire for association is supreme above all else.
आदेहं सङ्गिनी छाया भोगान्तं भोग एव च 4.24.
The body is like a companion shadow, and enjoyment itself comes to an end.
मतिश्चैवावशीलान्ता सुखी जन्मनिजन्मनि
Even the mind, which is the cause of happiness, reaches its limit in each birth.
यावच्च जीविनो जन्म तावद्भोगः सुखावहः
As long as a living being is born, so long does enjoyment, which brings happiness, continue.
ध्यायतः कृष्णपादाब्जं मम विघ्नो बभूव ह
While meditating on Krishna's lotus feet, an obstacle arose for me.
पुंश्चल्या सह शृङ्गारं दृष्ट्वा दैत्यस्य मन्मनः
Seeing the demon's mind absorbed in passion with a courtesan—
किं त्वहं तव कन्यायाः कटूक्तिशतकं मुने
But, O sage, I have endured a hundred harsh words from your daughter.
तवाज्ञां मस्तके कृत्वा ग्रहीष्यामि सुतां तव
Placing your command upon my head, I will accept your daughter.
रहस्युपस्थितां कामात्पुंश्चलीं चेज्जितेन्द्रियः
If one who has conquered his senses unites in secret with a courtesan out of desire—
