त्वामेवं विमुखं कृत्वा यामि चन्द्रान्तिकं यदि
If I turn away from you like this and go to Chandra—
अवमन्य स्त्रियं मूढो यो याति पुरुषाधमः
The fool who disregards a woman and goes away is the lowest of men.
तिलोत्तमावचः श्रुत्वा जहास बलिनन्दनः 4.23.
Hearing Tilottama's words, the son of Bali laughed.
भावं विज्ञाय भावज्ञः कामशास्त्रविशारदः
Understanding her feelings, he, wise in the knowledge of love, perceived her intent.
जगाम च तया सार्धं गन्धमादनगह्ररम्
He went together with her to the cave of Gandhamadana.
संस्थाप्य रत्नदीपांश्च धूपं च सुमनोहरम्
He arranged jeweled lamps and most delightful incense.
नानाप्रकारशृङ्गारं चकार काममोहितः
Overcome by passion, he engaged in various kinds of amorous play.
विपरीतरतौ तुष्टा बभूव रसिकेश्वरी
In their reversed union, the mistress of delight was satisfied.
तिलोत्तमा कामभावाद्बलिपुत्रमुवाच ह
Tilottama, moved by desire, spoke to the son of Bali.
तिलोत्तमोवाच एवंभूतं शुभदिनं कदा मे भविता पुनः
Tilottama said: When will such an auspicious day come again for me?
अयि किं रूपमाश्चर्यं गुणो वा तव दानव
O demon, what is this wondrous beauty or virtue of yours?
मां विस्मरसि कालेन पुरुषः षट्पदो यथा
You forget me over time, just as a man forgets a bee.
सत्संगमः शुभदिने पुण्यात्पुण्यवतां भवेत् 4.23.
Association with the virtuous on an auspicious day is gained by the meritorious.
पीयूषभोजनात्स्वर्गवासादपि च दुर्लभः
It is more rare than drinking nectar or dwelling in heaven.
क्षणं तिष्ठ महाराज पुनरालिंगनं कुरु
Stay for a moment, O great king, embrace me again.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा कुलटा कृत्वा वक्षसि सादरम्
Thus speaking, the courtesan respectfully embraced him to her breast.
कुलटालिंगनालापात्सोऽतिकामी बभूव ह
From the courtesan's embrace and words, he became exceedingly passionate.
पुनश्चकार शृंगारमसुरोऽष्टविधं मुने
Again, the demon performed eightfold acts of passion, O sage.
नखदन्तकरैः क्रीडां चकार विविधां पुनः मुनेर्दुर्वाससस्तेन ध्यानभङ्गो बभूव ह
He played various games with nails and teeth; because of this, the sage Durvasa's meditation was disturbed.
अदृष्टस्य तयोस्तत्र वल्मीकाच्छादितस्य च
There, unseen by others and hidden by the ant-hill,
ध्यायतश्चरणांभोजं कृष्णस्य परमात्मनः कामात्मनोर्न हि ज्ञानं कामेन हतचेतसोः
While meditating on the lotus feet of Krishna, the Supreme Soul, those whose minds are overcome by desire have no knowledge.
सहसा चेतनां प्राप्य प्रज्वलन्ब्रह्मतेजसा
Suddenly regaining awareness, blazing with the radiance of Brahman,
दिवानिशं न जानन्तौ संयुक्तौ काममोहितौ 4.23.
The two, joined together and deluded by desire, knew neither day nor night.
उवाच तौ विहारान्ते रक्तपङ्कजलोचनः
At the end of their dalliance, the one with eyes reddened like lotus petals spoke to them.
दुर्वासा उवाच भक्तप्रधानस्य बलेः पुत्रः पशुसमप्रभः
Durvasa said: The son of Bali, chief among devotees, shines like a beast.
देवो वा मानवो वाऽपि दैत्यगन्धर्वराक्षसाः
Whether god, human, demon, gandharva, or rakshasa—
ज्ञानलज्जाविहीना च खरजातिर्विशेषतः
Devoid of knowledge and shame, especially of the donkey kind.
तिलोत्तमे त्वमुत्तिष्ठ लज्जाहीना च पुंश्चली
But you, Tilottama, rise up—shameless and unchaste woman.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा स मुनिस्तस्थौ तत्र रुषा ज्वलन्
Having spoken thus, the sage stood there, burning with anger.
साहसिक उवाच हुताशनस्त्वं सूर्यश्च सृष्टिस्थित्यन्तकारकः
Sāhasika said: You are Fire, and also the Sun, the cause of creation, preservation, and destruction.
