दृष्ट्वा शैलमुत्पतन्तं वेगेन मधुसूदनः
Seeing the mountain flying swiftly, Madhusudana
पूर्वस्थाने पर्वतं तं स्थापयामास कौतुकात्
Out of amusement, he placed that mountain back in its original place.
उत्पत्य च महावेगाच्चकार वेष्टनं हरेः
With great speed, he rose up and tightly bound Hari.
प्रगृह्य श्रीहरिं वेगात्कृत्वा मूर्ध्नि महासुरः
Seizing Shri Hari with force, the mighty demon placed him upon his head.
प्रहरं च तयोर्युद्धं निर्लक्षे च बभूव ह
For one prahara, their battle continued, fierce and without distinction.
पुनर्मुहूर्तं युद्धं च बभूव भूतले तयोः 4.22.
Again, for a muhūrta, their fight took place upon the earth.
मद्भक्तस्य बलेः पुत्रं धन्यं तज्जीवनं परम्
The son of Bali, my devotee, is blessed—his life is truly supreme.
मद्दर्शनं स्वस्तिबीजं परं निर्वाणकारणम्
The sight of me is the seed of well-being, the highest cause of liberation.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा श्रीकृष्णः सस्मार चक्रमुत्तमम्
Having spoken thus, Shri Krishna remembered his supreme discus.
चिक्षेप भ्रामयित्वा च षोडशारमनुत्तमम्
He whirled and hurled the excellent discus with sixteen spokes.
पपात मस्तकं भूमौ दानवस्य महात्मनः
The head of the great-souled demon fell to the ground.
विलोक्य हरिलोकं संश्लिष्टं कृष्णपदाम्बुजे
Beholding the realm of Hari, he was united with Krishna's lotus feet.
गगनस्थाः सुराः सर्वे मुनयश्च भृशं मुदा
All the gods standing in the sky, and the sages, were filled with great joy.
नेदुर्दुन्दुभयः स्वर्गे ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः
The celestial drums resounded in heaven, and the hosts of apsarās danced.
स्तुत्वा जग्मुः सुराः सर्वे मुनयो हर्षविह्वलाः
Having offered praise, all the gods and sages departed, overwhelmed with delight.
बलश्च बलिनां श्रेष्ठस्तुष्टाव पुरुषोत्तमम् 4.22.
And Bala, foremost among the strong, praised the Supreme Person.
दत्त्वा कृष्णबलाभ्यां च प्रपक्वानि फलानि च
He gave to Krishna and Bala ripe fruits as offerings.
भुक्त्वा पीत्वा हरिः शीघ्रं बलेन बालकैः सह
Having eaten and drunk, Hari quickly departed with Bala and the boys.
नारद उवाच दुर्वासाः केन दोषेण शशाप दानवेश्वरम्
Narada said: For what fault did Durvasa curse the lord of the demons?
केन पुण्येन वा नाथ बलिनः श्रीहरेः पदम्
Or by what merit, O Lord, did the mighty one attain the feet of Shri Hari?
मुने सर्वं सुविस्तार्य वद संदेहभञ्जन
O sage, explain everything in detail and dispel my doubts.
श्रीनारायण उवाच पुरा श्रुतं धर्मवक्त्रात्पर्वते गन्धमादने
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Long ago, I heard from the mouth of Dharma, on Mount Gandhamādana,
पाद्मकल्पे च वृत्तान्तं विचित्रं सुमनोहरम्
In the Padma Kalpa, there was a marvelous and most delightful event.
यत्र कल्पे कथा चेयं तत्र त्वमुपबर्हणः
In that kalpa, this very story occurred, and you were the chief participant there.
पंचाशत्कामिनीनां च पतिः शृङ्गारतत्परः
You were the husband of fifty desirous women, wholly devoted to love.
अनुक्षणं पपुस्तास्ते सुन्दरं मुखपङ्कजम्
At every moment, they drank in your beautiful lotus-like face.
तासां प्राणैश्च घटितो विधिना त्वमिव श्रुतम्
By fate, you were joined to them by their very life-breaths, as has been heard.
पुष्पोद्याने च रहसि स्थानेस्थाने मनोरमे 4.23.
In the flower gardens, in secret, in various charming places—
काननेषु च रम्येषु श्मशाने जन्तुवर्जिते
And in delightful forests, and in cremation grounds deserted by living beings—
तदा दैवाद्विधेः शापाद्भूत्वा दासीसुतो भवान्
Then, by the curse of fate, you became the son of a maidservant.
