शेषाधारश्च कूर्मस्त्वमंशेन सृष्टिहेतवे
You are the supporter as Shesha, and as Kurma by a portion, for the purpose of creation.
रामो दाशरथिस्त्वं च जानक्युद्धारहेतवे
You are Rama, son of Dasharatha, for the rescue of Janaki.
कलया परशुरामश्च जमदग्निसुतो महान्
By a measure, you are Parashurama, the great son of Jamadagni.
अंशेन कपिलस्त्वं च सिद्धानां च गुरोर्गुरुः
By a portion, you are Kapila, and the guru of the siddhas, the guru of gurus.
अंशेन ज्ञानिनां श्रेष्ठो नरनारायणावृषी
By a portion, you are the foremost among the wise, Nara and Narayana, the sages.
अधुना कृष्णरूपस्त्वं परिपूर्णतमः स्वयम्
Now, you are Krishna in form, the most fully complete, yourself.
यशोदाजीवनो नित्यो नन्दैकानन्दवर्धनः 4.22.
He is the very life of Yaśodā, eternal, and the sole increaser of Nanda’s joy.
वसुदेवसुतः शान्तो देवकीदुःखभञ्जनः
Son of Vasudeva, peaceful, destroyer of Devakī’s sorrow.
पूतनायै मातृगतिं प्रदाता च कृपानिधिः
He granted the status of mother to Pūtanā and is a treasury of compassion.
स्वेच्छामय गुणातीत भक्तानां भयभञ्जन
Formed by his own will, transcending qualities, destroyer of fear for his devotees.
हे नाथ गार्दभीयोनेः समुद्धर भवार्णवात्
O Lord, rescue me, born of a she-ass, from the ocean of worldly existence.
वेदा ब्रह्मादयो यं च मुनीन्द्राः स्तोतुमक्षमाः
The Vedas, Brahmā, and the foremost sages are unable to praise him.
एवं कुरु कृपासिन्धो येन मे न भवेज्जनुः
O ocean of mercy, act so that I may not be born again.
ब्रह्मा स्तोता खरः स्तोता नोपहासितुमर्हसि
Brahmā is a worshipper, the ass is a worshipper; you should not be ridiculed.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा दैत्येन्द्रस्तस्थौ च पुरतो हरेः
Having spoken thus, the lord of the demons stood before Hari.
इदं दैत्यकृतं स्तोत्रं नित्यं भक्त्या च यः पठेत्
Whoever recites this hymn composed by the demon, with devotion, always—
इह लोके हरेर्भक्तिमन्ते दास्यं सुदुर्लभम् 4.22.
In this world, devoted service to Hari is exceedingly rare.
श्रीनारायण उवाच कथं करोमि संहारमीदृशं भक्तमित्यहो
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: How can I destroy such a devotee? Alas!
अनुमन्य स्मृतिं तस्य संजहार हरिः स्वयम्
Having granted his wish, Hari himself withdrew his memory.
दानवो मायया विष्णोर्विसस्मार पुनः स्वकम्
The demon, by Viṣṇu’s illusion, forgot his own self again.
उवाच श्रीहरिं दैत्यः कोपात्प्रस्फुरिताधरः
The demon spoke to Śrī Hari, his lips trembling with anger.
दैत्य उवाच अद्य प्रस्थापयिष्यामि त्वामहं यममन्दिरम्
The demon said: Today I will send you to the abode of Yama.
आयासि जीवनाकाङ्क्षी मम तालवनं शिशो
You have come, desiring life, to my Tālavana, O child.
न कंसो न जरासन्धो नरको न समो मम
Neither Kaṃsa, nor Jarāsandha, nor Naraka is equal to me.
नहि संहारकर्ता च मां संहर्तुं क्षमः शिवः
Indeed, Shiva, the agent of destruction, is not capable of destroying me.
मम तालतरून्भङ्क्त्वा पातयित्वा फलानि च
After breaking my palm trees and causing the fruits to fall,
कस्त्वं वद बटो सत्यं कमनीयोऽतिसुन्दरः 4.22.
Who are you? Tell me the truth, O boy, charming and exceedingly beautiful.
इत्युक्त्वा मस्तके कृत्वा प्रेरयित्वा तु तं बली
Having spoken thus, the powerful one placed him on his head and propelled him.
पातयित्वा च तं भूमौ विषाणाभ्यां जघान सः
He threw him down to the ground and struck him with his horns.
दैत्यो भग्नविषाणश्च तमीशं कोपयन्मुने
The demon, with his horns broken, provoked that lord in anger, O sage.
