विषाग्निवज्रभीतिश्च न भवेत्तत्र निश्चितम् अन्ते च स्वकुलं पूत्वा दास्यं च लभते ध्रुवम्
There is certainly no fear there from poison, fire, or thunderbolts; and at the end, having purified his own family, he surely attains servitude.
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच ।। 4.19.
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said:
सार्द्धं स्वगोष्ठ्या नागेन्द्र यमुनाजलवर्त्मना
Together with his own community, O king of serpents, he proceeded along the path of the Yamunā's waters.
कदा द्रक्ष्यामि त्वत्पादपद्मं नाथेत्युवाच ह
He said, 'O Lord, when shall I see your lotus feet?'
जगाम जलमार्गेण नागेन्द्रो विरहातुरः
Afflicted by separation, the king of serpents went by the water's path.
प्रसन्ना जन्तवः सर्वे बभूवुस्तेन नारद
All living beings became pleased because of him, O Nārada.
आज्ञया च कृपासिन्धोर्निर्मितं विश्वकर्मणा
By the command of the ocean of mercy, Viśvakarman constructed it.
निःशङ्को हर्षयुक्तश्च हरिभावन तत्परः सुखदं मोक्षदं सारं परं किं श्रोतुमिच्छसि
Free from fear, filled with joy, devoted to meditation on Hari—this is the essence, bestowing happiness and liberation; what more do you wish to hear?
सूत उवाच ऋषिं पप्रच्छ संदेहं सर्वसंदेहभञ्जनम्
Sūta said: He asked the sage, destroyer of all doubts, about his doubt.
नारद उवाच जगाम यमुनातीरं तन्मे ब्रूहि जगद्गुरो
Nārada said: He went to the bank of the Yamunā; tell me of this, O teacher of the world.
श्रीनारायण उवाच
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said:
यच्छ्रुतं धर्मवक्त्रान्मे मलये सूर्यपर्वणि 4.19.
What I heard from the mouth of Dharma, on Mount Malaya during the solar festival—
पप्रच्छ धर्मं पुलहः कथितं मुनिसंसदि
Pulaha asked about dharma in the assembly of sages, and it was explained.
तत्र श्रुतं मया विप्र निबोध कथयामि ते
There I heard it, O brāhmaṇa; listen, I will tell you.
कार्तिकीपूर्णिमायां तु कुर्वन्ति गरुडार्चनम्
On the full moon of Kārtika, they perform worship of Garuḍa.
पुष्करे च महातीर्थे सुस्नाता भक्तिसंयुताः
At Puṣkara, the great holy place, having bathed well, filled with devotion—
नागपूजोपकरणं बलाद्भक्षितुमुद्यतः
Someone, intent on forcefully taking the offerings for serpent worship—
न शक्ता वारणे ते चेत्याविर्भूतः खगेश्वरः
They were unable to prevent him; then the lord of birds appeared.
प्राणशक्त्या च युयुधुर्यावत्सूर्योदयं मुने
With the power of their vital energy, they fought until sunrise, O sage.
अनन्तं शरणं जग्मुः सर्वेषामभयप्रदम्
They all sought refuge in Ananta, who grants fearlessness to all.
तत्र तस्थौ च निःशङ्कः कालीयस्तं ददर्श ह
There, Kaliya stood without fear and saw him.
पराजितश्च नागेन्द्रस्तेजसा गरुडस्य च ।। 4.19.
That king of serpents was defeated by the radiance of Garuda.
भिया पलायनं कृत्वा जगाम यमुना ह्रदम् तत्र तस्थौ भिया नागो जग्मुः पश्चाच्च तद्गणाः
Fleeing in fear, he went to the pool of the Yamuna; there the serpent remained out of fear, and afterwards his followers also went there.
नारद उवाच कथं न शक्तो गन्तुं तं ह्रदमीश्वरवाहनः
Narada said: How was the Lord's mount unable to enter that pool?
श्रीनारायण उवाच
Sri Narayana said:
तपस्तप्त्वा महासिद्धो दध्यौ कृष्णपदाम्बुजम्
Having performed austerities, the great siddha meditated on Krishna's lotus feet.
गणेन सार्धं निःशंकः करोति भ्रमणं मुदा
Without fear, together with his group, he joyfully wandered about.
मुनिं प्रदक्षिणी कृत्य यात्यायाति मुदाऽन्वितः
He circled the sage in reverence, coming and going with delight.
जग्राह चञ्चुना मीनं मुनीन्द्रस्य समीपतः
He seized a fish with his beak near the great sage.
प्रकोपितो मुनेर्दृष्ट्या मीनस्तोये पपात ह मीनश्च गरुडत्रासात्तस्थौ मुनिसमीपतः
Angered by the sage's gaze, the fish fell into the water; and out of fear of Garuda, the fish remained near the sage.
