आजगाम रथस्तूर्णमुद्दीप्तस्तेजसा मुने
A chariot, blazing with splendor, swiftly arrived, O sage.
शतचक्रो वायुवेगो मनोयायी मनोहरः
It had a hundred wheels, moved with the speed of the wind, traveled by the mind, and was enchanting.
प्रणम्य कृष्णं तां नीत्वा जग्मुर्गोलोकमुत्तमम्
After bowing to Krishna and taking her, they went to the supreme Goloka.
स च किंचिन्न बुबुधे मोहितो विष्णुमायया
But he understood nothing, being deluded by Vishnu's maya.
ददौ हस्तं च कृपया शीघ्रं कालियमस्तके
Out of compassion, he quickly placed his hand upon the head of Kaliya.
पुटाञ्जलियुतां साश्रुपूर्णां च सुरसां सतीम् 4.19.
Surasā, pure and devoted, stood with folded hands, her palms joined, and her eyes filled with tears.
भक्त्युद्रेकात्साश्रुनेत्रां पुलकाङ्कितविग्रहाम् यदीश्वरस्य सततं योग्यायोग्ये समा कृपा
Because of the surge of devotion, her eyes were brimming with tears and her body was marked by horripilation; the Lord’s mercy is always equal, whether one is worthy or unworthy.
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच
Śrī Krishna said:
त्वं मे प्राणाधिको वत्स सुखं तिष्ठ भयं त्यज
You are dearer to me than life itself, child; remain in happiness and cast away your fear.
किंचित्तद्दमनं कृत्वा त्वत्प्रसादं करोम्यहम्
Having subdued you to some extent, I now grant you my favor.
द्विगुणं ब्रह्महत्याया भविता तस्य किल्बिषम्
He will incur a sin twice as great as that of killing a Brahmin.
वंशायुर्यशसा हानिर्भविता तस्य निश्चितम्
Certainly, there will be a loss of longevity and fame for his lineage.
त्वत्प्रमाणाः कीटसंघा दंशिष्यन्ति च संततम्
Hosts of insects, equal to you in measure, will continually bite him.
तस्य वंशोद्भवानां च त्वद्वंशाद्भविता भयम्
For those born in his lineage, there will be fear from your descendants.
प्रणमिष्यन्ति भक्त्या ते मुच्यन्ते सर्वपातकात् 4.19.
Those who bow to you with devotion will be freed from all sin.
मत्पदाङ्कं मूर्ध्नि दृष्ट्वा त्वां भक्त्या प्रणमिष्यति
Whoever, seeing my footprint on your head, bows to you with devotion—
सर्वेषां ज्ञातिसर्पाणां वरोऽद्य भव मद्वरात्
Today, by my boon, become the giver of blessings to all your kinsmen among the serpents.
भयं त्यक्त्वा कथय मां त्वदीयं दुःखभञ्जनम् पुटाञ्जलियुतो भूत्वा तमुवाच भुजङ्गमः
Abandoning fear, tell me, your remover of sorrow, what you desire; with folded hands, the serpent spoke to him.
भक्तिं स्मृतिं त्वत्पदाब्जे देहि जन्मनि जन्मनि
Grant me devotion and remembrance of your lotus feet, in every birth.
तद्भवेत्सफलं यत्र स्मृतिस्त्वच्चरणाम्बुजे
Wherever remembrance of your lotus feet exists, there, life becomes fruitful.
त्वत्पादध्यानयुक्तस्य यत्तत्स्थानं च तत्परम्
The place attained by one absorbed in meditation on your feet is indeed supreme.
यदि त्वत्सेवया याति सफलो निष्कलोऽथवा
If, through service to you, one departs, whether with or without residue, it is fruitful.
न सन्ति जन्ममरणरोगशोकार्तिभीतयः
There is no birth, death, disease, sorrow, suffering, or fear.
वाञ्छा नास्त्येव भक्तानां त्वत्पादसेवनं विना 4.19.
Indeed, devotees have no desire except for the service of your feet.
पश्यन्ति भक्ताः किं चान्यत्सालोक्यादिचतुष्टयम्
What else do devotees see, apart from the four types of liberation such as residing in your world?
तावत्त्वद्भावनेनैव त्वद्वर्णोऽहमनुग्रहात्
By contemplating you alone, through your grace, I have become of your own nature.
देशाद् दूरं च न्यक्कारं चकार दृढभक्तिमान्
A steadfast devotee cast far away both disgrace and distance from his homeland.
स च उक्तश्च भक्तोऽहं न मां त्यक्तुं क्षमोऽधुना
And that devotee, having been addressed, said, 'I am your devotee; now I am unable to abandon you.'
सदोषं गुणयुक्तं मां सोऽधुना त्यक्तुमक्षमः
Though I possess faults and virtues, now he is unable to abandon me.
भयं न केभ्यः सर्वत्र तमनंतं गुरुं विना
There is no fear from anyone, anywhere, except from the infinite Guru.
