शीघ्रं जीवय गन्धर्वं देवेश्वर सुरेश्वर
Quickly revive the Gandharva, O Lord of the gods, O chief of the immortals.
इत्युक्त्वा बालकस्तत्र विप्ररूपी जनार्दनः
Having spoken thus, the boy—Janārdana, appearing in the form of a brāhmaṇa—was present there.
सौतिरुवाच प्रययुर्मालतीमूलं ब्रह्मेशानपुरोगमाः
Sūta said: Led by Brahmā and Īśāna, they went to the foot of the mālatī tree.
ब्रह्मा कमण्डलुजलं ददौ गात्रे शवस्य च
Brahmā poured water from his water-pot upon the body of the corpse.
ज्ञानदानं ददौ तस्मै ज्ञानानन्दः शिवः स्वयम्
Śiva himself, the embodiment of knowledge and bliss, bestowed the gift of knowledge upon him.
वह्निदर्शनमात्रेण बभूव जठरानलः
At the mere sight of Agni, the fire of digestion arose within.
तस्य वायोरधिष्ठानाज्जगत्प्राणस्वरूपिणः
By the presence of Vāyu, who is the very life-breath of the world,
सर्व्वाधिष्ठानमात्रेण दृष्टिशक्तिर्बभूव ह
By the mere presence of all the presiding deities, the power of sight was restored.
शवस्तथाऽपि नोत्तस्थौ यथा शेते जडस्तथा
Yet the corpse did not rise, but lay there insensible as before.
ब्रह्मणो वचनात्साध्वी तुष्टाव परमेश्वरम्
At Brahmā's command, the virtuous lady praised the Supreme Lord.
मालावत्युवाच विना येन शवाः सर्वे प्राणिनो जगतीतले
Mālāvatī said: Without whom all living beings on earth are but corpses,
निर्लिप्तं साक्षिरूपं च सर्वेषां सर्वकर्मसु 1.18.
Who is unattached, the witness of all, in every action of all beings,
येन सृष्टा च प्रकृतिः सर्वाधारो परात्परा
By whom Prakṛti was created, who is the foundation of all, the Supreme beyond the supreme,
जगत्स्रष्टा स्वयं ब्रह्मा नियतो यस्य सेवया
By whose service Brahmā himself, the creator of the world, is ever engaged,
ध्यायन्ते यं सुराः सर्वे मुनयो मनवस्तथा
Whom all the gods, sages, and Manus meditate upon,
साकारं च निराकारं परं स्वेच्छामयं विभुम्
Who is both with form and formless, the supreme, the sovereign of his own will,
तपःफलं तपोबीजं तपसां च फलप्रदम्
The fruit of austerity, the seed of penance, the bestower of the results of all austerities,
सर्वाधारं सर्वबीजं कर्म तत्कर्मणां फलम्
The support of all, the seed of all, the action and the fruit of all actions,
स्वयंतेजःस्वरूपं च भक्तानुग्रहविग्रहम्
His very form is self-effulgent, a manifestation assumed out of compassion for devotees.
तत्तेजो मण्डलाकारं सूर्यकोटिसमप्रभम्
That radiance is shaped like a circle of light, shining with the brilliance of ten million suns.
नवीननीरदश्यामं शरत्पङ्कजलोचनम्
He is dark as a fresh raincloud, with eyes like autumn lotuses.
कोटिकन्दर्पलावण्यं लीलाधाम मनोहरम् ।। 1.18.
He possesses beauty surpassing countless Cupids, the very abode of playful charm, captivating to behold.
द्विभुजं मुरलीहस्तं पीतकौशेयवाससम्
He has two arms, holds a flute in his hand, and is dressed in yellow silk garments.
गोपाङ्गनापरिवृतं कुत्रचिन्निर्जने वने
He is surrounded by cowherd maidens, sometimes in a secluded forest.
कुत्रचिद्गोपवेषं च वेष्टितं गोपबालकैः
Elsewhere, he appears in the attire of a cowherd, encircled by cowherd boys.
निकरं कामधेनूनां रक्षन्तं शिशुरूपिणम्
He protects herds of wish-fulfilling cows, taking the form of a child.
वेणुं क्वणन्तं मधुरं गोपीसम्मोहकारणम्
He sweetly plays the flute, the cause of the gopīs' enchantment.
लक्ष्मीकान्तं पार्षदैश्च सेवितं च चतुर्भुजैः
He is the beloved of Lakṣmī, served by attendants with four arms.
श्वेतद्वीपे विष्णुरूपं पद्मया परिषेवितम्
On the White Island, he appears in the form of Viṣṇu, worshipped by Padmā.
शिवस्वरूपं शिवदं स्वांशेन शिवरूपिणम्
He assumes the form of Śiva, bestower of auspiciousness, manifesting as Śiva by his own portion.
