गोपालबालकाः सर्वे विप्रेन्द्र नवकोटयः
All the cowherd boys, O best of Brāhmaṇas, numbered nine crores.
वृद्धाश्च कोटिशस्तत्र बृहच्छ्रोण्यश्चलत्कुचाः
There, countless elderly women with broad hips and swaying breasts,
ताः सुशीलादयो भव्या नानालंकारभूषिताः
Those noble and virtuous women were adorned with various ornaments.
काश्चिदारुह्य शिबिकां रथमारुह्य काश्चन
Some mounted palanquins, and others ascended chariots.
ताभिर्युक्ता ययौ देवी रत्नालंकार भूषिता
Accompanied by them, the goddess proceeded, adorned with jeweled ornaments.
ययौ स्यन्दनमारुह्य शातकौम्भपरिच्छदम् 4.16.
She went, ascending a chariot furnished with golden trappings.
वीरभानुश्चन्द्रभानुर्गजस्थाः प्रययुर्मुदा
Vīrabhānu and Candrabhānu joyfully rode on elephants.
स्वर्ण स्यन्दनमास्थाय जग्मतुः परया मुदा
Mounting a golden chariot, they went with supreme delight.
अश्वस्थाश्च गजस्थाश्च रथस्थाश्चैव केचन
Some were on horses, some on elephants, and some on chariots.
वृषस्था गर्दभस्थाश्च संगीततानतत्पराः
Some rode bulls, some donkeys, all intent on producing music.
मुदान्विताः सस्मिताश्च स्वर्णालंकारभूषिताः
Filled with joy and smiling, they were adorned with golden ornaments.
काश्चित्कन्दुकहस्ताश्च काश्चित्पुत्तलिकाकराः
Some held balls in their hands, and some carried dolls.
वेषद्रव्यकराः काश्चित्काश्चिन्मालाकरा वराः
Some held costume materials, and some, the best among them, carried garlands.
वह्निशुद्धांशुकानां च वाहिकाश्चैव काश्चन
Some women served as bearers of garments purified by fire.
काश्चित्संगीतनिरताः काश्चिच्चित्रकथारताः
Some were devoted to singing, others delighted in telling stories and painting.
कोटिशः कोटिशश्चाश्वाः कोटिशः कोटिशो रथाः 4.16.
There were tens of millions upon tens of millions of horses, and tens of millions upon tens of millions of chariots.
कोटिशः कोटिशश्चैव वृषेन्द्रा द्रव्यवाहकाः
There were also tens of millions upon tens of millions of great bulls, bearers of goods.
हस्तिपांकुशयुक्तानि ययुर्वृन्दावनं वनम्
With goads for elephant-drivers, they proceeded to the forest of Vṛndāvana.
वृक्षमूले यथास्थानं तस्थुः सर्वे यथोचितम्
At the foot of the trees, each stood in their proper place as was fitting.
अद्य संतिष्ठतेत्येवं श्रुत्वा श्रीकृष्णभाषितम् इति तेषां वचः श्रुत्वा श्रीकृष्णो वाक्यमब्रवीत्
Hearing the words of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, 'Today remain here,' they listened, and then Śrī Kṛṣṇa spoke these words.
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said:
देवप्रीतिं विना शक्ता नहि द्रष्टुं च केचन
Without the favor of the gods, no one is able to see.
प्रातर्यूयं गृहान्रम्यान्द्रक्ष्यथाद्य ध्रुवं मुदा
Tomorrow morning, you will surely see your beautiful homes again with joy.
देवीं च वटमूलस्थां पूजां कुरुत चण्डिकाम् भुक्त्वा भोगान्दिने रात्रौ तत्रैव सुषुपुर्मुदा
Worship Caṇḍikā, the goddess who dwells at the foot of the banyan tree; after enjoying pleasures during the day, at night they slept there with happiness.
सुप्तेषु व्रजनन्देषु नक्तं वृन्दावने वने
When the residents of Vraja were asleep at night in the forest of Vṛndāvana,
निद्रितासु च गोपीषु रम्यतल्पस्थितासु च
And the gopīs too were asleep, lying on their lovely beds,
कासुचिच्छिशुयुक्तासु सखीयुक्तासु कासुचित्
Some with their children, some with their friends,
पूर्णेन्दुकौमुदीयुक्ते स्वर्गादपि मनोहरे
In a night adorned with the full moon and moonlight, more enchanting than heaven,
सर्वप्राणिनि निश्चेष्टे मुहूर्ते पञ्चमे गते
When all living beings were motionless, as the fifth watch of the night passed,
बिभ्रद्दिव्यांशुकं सूक्ष्मं रत्नमाल्यं मनोहरम्
Wearing a divine, delicate garment and a charming jeweled garland,
