नारद उवाच कथयस्व महाभाग कृतं किं परमाद्भुतम् ।। 4.16.
Nārada said: Tell me, O greatly fortunate one, what wondrous deed was accomplished?
नारायण उवाच
Nārāyaṇa said:
श्रुतं महेशवदनात्सूर्यपर्वणि पुष्करे।। हरेर्गुणप्रसङ्गेन कथयामास शंकरः
I heard from Maheśa's mouth, at the festival of the sun in Puṣkara, that Śaṃkara narrated, prompted by Hari's virtues.
संपृष्टो मुनिसंघैश्च मया धर्मेण ब्रह्मणा
Questioned by groups of sages and by me, by Brahmā in accordance with dharma,
कथयामास विस्तार्य सावधानं निशामय
He narrated in detail; listen attentively.
महांस्तपस्विप्रवरो हरिसेवनतत्परः
The great ascetic, foremost among the twice-born, devoted to serving Hari,
सस्मरुः कृष्णपादाब्जं स्वप्ने ज्ञाने दिवानिशम्
Remembered Krishna's lotus feet in dream, in knowledge, day and night.
नित्यं दत्त्वा च कमलं संपूज्य तं पपुर्जलम्
Daily, offering a lotus and worshipping him, they drank water.
चत्वारो वैष्णवश्रेष्ठास्तेपुस्ते पुष्करे तपः
The four foremost Vaishnavas performed austerities at Pushkara.
ज्येष्ठो दुर्वाससो योगं संप्राप्य योगिनां वरः
The eldest, Durvasa, attained yoga, being the best among yogis.
सद्यो देहं परित्यज्य बभूव कृष्णपार्षदः ।। 4.16.
He immediately abandoned his body and became an attendant of Krishna.
पद्मानि कृष्णपूजार्थमाहर्तुमुदये रवेः
They gathered lotuses for Krishna's worship at sunrise.
दृष्ट्वा निबध्य संजग्मुः सर्वे शंकरकिंकराः
Seeing them, all the attendants of Shankara bound them and departed.
ते सर्वे शंकरं दृष्ट्वा प्रणेमुः शिरसा भुवि ईषद्धास्यप्रसन्नास्यो भक्तानुग्रहकातरः
All of them, seeing Shankara, bowed their heads to the ground; his face was slightly smiling and gracious, eager to show favor to devotees.
लक्षयक्षै रक्षणीयं पार्वतीव्रतहेतवे
A hundred thousand Yakshas were appointed for protection, for the sake of Parvati's vow.
व्रते त्रैमासिके भक्त्या पतिसौभाग्यवर्द्धने पुटाञ्जलियुताः सर्वे भक्तिनम्रात्मकन्धराः
During the three-month vow, which increases marital fortune through devotion, all stood with folded hands, their necks bowed in devotion.
गन्धर्वा ऊचुः वयं गन्धर्वप्रवरा गन्धवाहसुता विभो
The Gandharvas said: 'We are the foremost Gandharvas, sons of Gandhavaha, O Lord.'
हरये कमलं दत्त्वा पिबामो जलमीश्वर
Having offered a lotus to Hari, we drink water, O Lord.
गृहाण कमलं सर्वं युष्माकं च फलं कुरु
Accept all the lotuses and grant us their fruits.
किं वा कथं न पास्यामस्तुभ्यं दत्तानि तानि च 4.16.
Why, or how, should we not drink those which have been given to you?
साक्षात्तस्मै प्रदत्त्वा च पद्मं पूता वयं प्रभो
Having directly offered the lotus to him, we are purified, O Lord.
भक्तानुग्रहतो देहो रूपभेदश्च मायया
By the grace shown to devotees, the body and its forms are altered by illusion.
यतो नो मानसं पूर्णं तद्रूपं दर्शयाच्युत
Since our minds are fulfilled, O Achyuta, reveal that form to us.
विनोदमुरलीहस्तं पीतांबरधरं परम्
The supreme one, holding a flute for delight, wearing yellow garments.
ईषद्धास्यप्रसन्नास्यं रत्नालंकारभूषितम्
His face slightly smiling and gracious, adorned with jewel ornaments.
मयूरपिच्छचूडं च मालतीमाल्यभूषितम्
Crowned with peacock feathers, adorned with a garland of jasmine flowers.
कोटिकन्दर्पलावण्यलीलाधाममनोहरम्
He is the abode of playful beauty surpassing millions of Cupids, enchanting to the mind.
नवयौवनसंपन्नं राधावक्षस्थलस्थितम्
Endowed with fresh youth, he rests upon the bosom of Radha.
स्वात्मारामं पूर्णकामं भक्तानुग्रहकातरम्
He delights in his own self, is fulfilled in all desires, and is eager to bestow grace upon devotees.
श्रीकृष्णरूपश्रवणात्पुलकाङ्कितविग्रहः 4.16.
Upon hearing of the form of Shri Krishna, his body became marked with horripilation.
