Brahmavaivarta Purana

वाराणस्याश्च दहनं विप्रदारिद्र्यभंजनम्

The burning of Varanasi and the removal of the poverty of the Brahmins.

तीर्थयात्राप्रसंगेन युष्माभिः सह दर्शनम्

By the occasion of pilgrimage, you will have a meeting together.

प्रस्थापयित्वा द्वारां च परं नारायणांशकम्

Having dispatched the gateway and the supreme portion of Narayana,

गमिष्यत्येव गोलोकं नाथोऽयं जगतां पतिः

This Lord, the master of the worlds, will indeed go to Goloka.

धर्मगेहमृषी द्वौ च विष्णुः क्षीरोदमेव च

The house of Dharma, the two sages, and Vishnu himself to the Milk Ocean.

श्रूयतां सांप्रतं कर्म यदर्थं गमनं मम

Now listen to the action for which my journey is undertaken.

गुरुवारे च रेवत्यां विशुद्धे चंद्रतारके 4.13.

On Thursday, under the Revati star, when the moon and stars are pure,

वणिजे करणोत्कृष्टे शुभयोगे मनोहरे

When the merchant's calculation is excellent, in an auspicious and delightful conjunction,

आलोच्य पंडितैः सार्द्धं कुरु कर्म मुदाऽन्वितः

Having consulted with the learned, perform the act with joyful intent.

हृष्टो नंदो यशोदा च कर्मोद्योगं चकार ह

Nanda, delighted, and Yashoda too, undertook the preparation for the act.

बालका बालिकाश्चैव आजग्मुर्नंदमंदिरम्

Boys and girls came to Nanda's house.

शिष्यसंघैः परिवृतं ज्वलंतं ब्रह्मतेजसा

Surrounded by groups of disciples, blazing with the radiance of Brahman,

पश्यंतं सस्मितं नंदभवनानां परिच्छदम्

Beholding, with a smile, the furnishings of Nanda's house,

भूतं भव्यं भविष्यं च पश्यंतं ज्ञानचक्षुषा

Seeing the past, present, and future with the eye of knowledge,

बहिर्यशोदाक्रोडस्थं तादृशं सस्मितं शिशुम्

Outside, on Yashoda's lap, was such a smiling child.

तं दृष्ट्वा परमप्रीत्या पूर्णभूतमनोरथम्

Seeing him, with supreme joy, their cherished desires fulfilled,

हृदि पूजां प्रणामं च कुर्वंतं योगचर्यया 4.13.

In their hearts, they performed worship and salutations through yogic practice.

आसनस्थो मुनिस्तस्थौ ते जग्मुः स्वालयं मुदा

The sage remained seated in his posture, while they joyfully returned to their own homes.

प्रस्थापयामास शीघ्रमाराद्दूरस्थितान्मुदा

He promptly sent off those who had come from afar, with delight.

गुडकुल्यां तैलकुल्यां मधुकुल्यां च विस्तृताम्

There were broad channels of jaggery, oil, and honey.

शर्करोदककुल्यां च परिपूर्णां च लीलया

And also a channel of sugared water, completely filled, as if by play.

पृथुकानां शैलशतं लवणानां च सप्त च

There were a hundred mountains of flattened rice and seven of salt.

परिपक्वफलानां च तत्र षोडशपर्वतान्

And there, sixteen hills of fully ripened fruits.

मोदकानां च शैलं च स्वस्तिकानां च पर्वतान्

There was a mountain of sweet dumplings and hills of auspicious cakes.

कर्पूरादिकयुक्तानां तांबूलानां च मंदिरम्

A pavilion of betel leaves mixed with camphor and other fragrant substances.

चंदनागुरुकस्तूरीकंकुमेन समन्वितम्

Adorned with sandalwood, aloe, musk, and saffron.

मुक्ताफलानि रम्याणि प्रवालानि मुदाऽन्वितः 4.13.

Beautiful pearls and coral, filled with joy.

पुत्रान्नप्राशने नन्दः कारयामास कौतुकात्

Nanda, out of delight, arranged the rice-feeding ceremony for his son.

प्राङ्गणं कदलीस्तम्भै रसालनवपल्लवैः

The courtyard was decorated with banana trunks and fresh mango shoots.
