रजस्वला च कुलटा चावीरा जारदूतिका
A menstruating woman, a courtesan, a barren woman, and an old procuress,
यो हि तासामन्नभोजी ब्रह्महत्यां लभेत्तु सः
He who eats food among them surely incurs the sin of killing a Brahmin.
पापानां व्याधिभिः सार्द्धं मित्रता सन्ततं ध्रुवम् 1.16.
Sin is always accompanied by diseases; their association is constant and certain.
पापेन जायते व्याधिः पापेन जायते जरा
From sin arises disease; from sin arises old age.
तस्मात्पापं महावैरं दोषबीजममङ्गलम्
Therefore, sin is a great enemy, the seed of faults, and inauspiciousness.
स्वधर्माचारयुक्तं च दीक्षितं हरिसेवकम्
One who is devoted to their own duty and conduct, who is initiated and serves Hari,
व्रतोपवासयुक्तं च सदा तीर्थनिषेवकम्
Who is engaged in vows and fasting, and always visits holy places,
एताञ्जरा न सेवेत व्याधिसंघश्च दुर्जयः
Such a person is not afflicted by old age, nor by the difficult-to-conquer host of diseases.
ज्वरस्य सर्वरोगाणां जनकः कथितः सति
Fever is said to be the origin of all diseases.
एते यथा सं चरन्ति स्वयं यान्ति च देहिषु
Just as these (diseases) move about, so too do they enter into embodied beings.
क्षुधि जाज्वल्यमानायामाहाराभाव एव च
When hunger is blazing and there is an absence of food,
तालबिल्वफलं भुक्त्वा जलपानं च तत्क्षणम्
After eating the fruit of palmyra or bael, and immediately drinking water,
तप्तोदकं च शिरसि भाद्रे तिक्तं विशेषतः 1.16.
Or pouring hot water on the head, especially in the month of Bhādra, or anything bitter,
सशर्करं च धान्याकं पिष्टं शीतोदकान्वितम्
Or consuming ground coriander with sugar and cold water,
बिल्वतालफलं पक्वं सर्वमैक्षवमेव च
Or eating ripe bael or palmyra fruit, and all things made from sugarcane,
पित्तक्षयकरं सद्यो बलपुष्टिप्रदं परम्
These immediately reduce bile and greatly provide strength and nourishment.
भोजनानन्तरं स्नानं जलपानं विना तृषा
Bathing immediately after eating, or drinking water without thirst,
पर्य्युषितान्नं च तक्रं च पक्वं रम्भाफलं दधि
Stale food, buttermilk, ripe plantain fruit, and curd,
नारिकेलोदकं रूक्षस्नानं पर्युषिते जले
Coconut water, bathing with cold water, and water that has become stale,
खातस्नानं च वर्षासु मूलकं श्लेष्मकारकम्
Bathing after eating during the rainy season, and consuming radish, produce phlegm.
वह्निस्वेदं भ्रष्टभङ्गं पक्वतैलविशेषकम्
Food that is reheated, spoiled, or prepared with a special kind of cooked oil,
पिण्डारकमपक्वं च रम्भा फलमपक्वकम्
Uncooked rice-balls and unripe plantain fruit,
सघृतं रोचनाचूर्णं सघृतं शुष्कशर्करम् 1.16.
Powder of rocanā mixed with ghee, and dried sugar with ghee,
द्रव्याण्येतानि गान्धर्वि सद्यः श्लेष्महराणि च
O Gandharvi, these substances immediately remove phlegm.
भोजनानन्तरं सद्यो गमनं धावनं तथा
Immediately after eating, walking or running,
वृद्धस्त्रीगमनं चैव मनःसन्ताप एव च
Union with an old woman, and also mental distress,
कटु वाक्यं भयं शोकः केवलं वायुकारणम्
Harsh words, fear, and sorrow are solely causes of wind (vāyu).
पक्वं रम्भाफलं चैव सबीजं शर्करोदकम्
Ripe plantain fruit, water with sugar and seeds,
माहिषं दधि मिष्टं च केवलं वा सशर्करम्
Buffalo curd, sweetened or with sugar alone,
पक्वतैलविशेषं च तिलतैलं च केवलम्
A special kind of cooked oil, and pure sesame oil,
