हरिस्तन्मानसं ज्ञात्वा पपौ जन्मांतरे स्तनम्
Hari, knowing her intention, drank her milk in another birth.
दत्त्वा विषस्तनं कृष्णं पूतना राक्षसी मुने
O sage, Pūtanā the rākṣasī gave poisonous breastmilk to Kṛṣṇa.
इत्येवं कथितं विप्र श्रीकृष्ण गुणकीर्तनम्
Thus, O brāhmaṇa, the praise of Śrī Kṛṣṇa's virtues has been told.
एकदा गोकुले साध्वी यशोदा नंदगेहिनी
Once, in Gokula, the virtuous Yaśodā, wife of Nanda—
वात्यारूपं तृणावर्तमागच्छंतं च गोकुलम्
—saw Tṛṇāvarta, in the form of a whirlwind, approaching Gokula.
भाराक्रांता यशोदा च तत्याज बालकं तदा
Overcome by the weight, Yaśodā then set the child down.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे त वात्यारूपधरोऽसुरः
At that moment, the demon took on the form of a whirlwind.
बभंज वृक्षशाखाश्च ह्यंधीभूतं च गोकुलम्
He broke the branches of trees and plunged Gokula into darkness.
असुरोऽपि हरिस्पर्शाज्जगाम हरिमंदिरम्
But the demon, by Hari's touch, attained the abode of Hari.
पांड्यदेशोद्भवो राजा शापाद्दुर्वाससोऽसुरः
The demon, a king born in the land of Pāṇḍya, was cursed by Durvāsas.
वात्यारूपे गते गोपा गोप्यश्च भयविह्वलाः
When the whirlwind departed, the cowherds and cowherd women were stricken with fear.
सर्वे निजघ्नुः स्वं वक्षस्थलं शोकाकुला भयात्
All, overwhelmed by grief and fear, struck their own chests.
अन्वेषणं प्रकुर्वंतो ददृशुर्बालकं व्रजे 4.11.
While searching, they saw the boy in Vraja.
बाह्यैकदेशे सरसस्तीरे नीरसमन्विते
In an outer part, on the bank of the lake, where there was dryness.
गृहीत्वा बालकं नंदः कृत्वा वक्षसि सत्वरम्
Nanda, taking the boy, quickly placed him on his chest.
यशोदा रोहिणी शीघ्रं दृष्ट्वा बालं रुरोद च
Yashoda and Rohini, seeing the boy swiftly, wept.
मंगलं कारयामास स्नापयामास बालकम्
They performed auspicious rites and bathed the boy.
सुविचार्य वद ब्रह्मन्नितिहासं पुरातनम्
Consider well and speak, O Brahman, the ancient history.
स्त्रीसहस्रं समादाय कामबाणप्रपीडितः
Taking a thousand women, afflicted by the arrows of desire,
मनोहरे निर्जने च पर्वते गंधमादने
In a charming, solitary place on the Gandhamadana mountain,
नानाप्रकारशृगारं विपरीतादिकं नृपः
The king engaged in various kinds of amorous acts, including those contrary to custom.
कृत्वा मूर्तिसहस्रं च योगींद्रो नृपतीश्वरः
Having created a thousand forms, the lord of yogis and kings,
नार्यो विवसनाः सर्वा नग्नाश्च नृपयोषितः 4.11.
All the women were unclothed, and the king's wives were naked.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे तत्र समायातो महामुनिः
Meanwhile, there arrived a great sage at that place.
दृष्ट्वा मुनिं महामत्तो नोत्तस्थौ न ननाम ह
Seeing the sage, greatly intoxicated, he neither rose nor bowed.
दृष्ट्वा चुकोप नृपतिं शशाप स्फुरिताधरः
Seeing this, the sage became angry at the king and cursed him, his lips trembling.
भारते लक्षवर्षं च स्थातव्यं ते नराधम
In Bharata, you must remain for a hundred thousand years, O lowest of men.
स्थानेस्थाने हे महिष्यो जनिं लभत भारते
In each place, O queens, you will obtain birth in Bharata.
इत्युक्त्वा तु मुनींद्रस्तु जगाम शंकरालयम्
Having spoken thus, the chief of sages went to the abode of Shiva.
गते मुनींद्रे राजेंद्रो रुरोद च सरित्तटे
When the chief of sages had departed, the king wept on the riverbank.
