पप्रच्छ कुशलं सा च गोपानां बालकस्य च
She too asked after the welfare of the gopas and the child.
तामूचुर्गोपिकाः सर्वाः का त्वमीश्वरि सांप्रतम्
All the gopīs said to her, 'O lady, who are you at this moment?'
तासां च वचनं श्रुत्वा साप्युवाच मनोहरम्
Hearing their words, she also spoke in a captivating manner.
श्रुतं वाचिकवक्त्रेण तत्त्वं मंगलसूचकम्
The truth, auspiciously indicated, was heard from her spoken words.
श्रुत्वागताहं तं द्रष्टुमाशिषं कर्तुमीप्सिताम् ।। । पुत्रमानय तं दृष्ट्वा यामि कृत्वा तमाशिषम्
Hearing, I have come to see him and to bestow the desired blessing; bring the child—after seeing him and giving the blessing, I shall depart.
ब्राह्मणीवचनं श्रुत्वा यशोदा हृष्टमानसा
Hearing the words of the brāhmaṇī, Yaśodā became delighted in her heart.
कृत्वा क्रोडे तु तं साध्वी चुचुंब च पुनः पुनः ।। 4.10.
Taking the child onto her lap, the virtuous lady kissed him again and again.
अहोद्भुतोऽयं बालस्त सुन्दरो गोपसुन्दरि
Ah, this boy is wonderful, beautiful, O lovely gopī!
कृष्णो विषस्तनं पीत्वा जहास वक्षसि स्थितः
Kṛṣṇa, having drunk the poisoned milk, laughed as he sat upon her breast.
तत्याज बालकं साध्वी प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा पपात ह
The virtuous lady released the child, gave up her life, and fell down.
स्थूलदेहं परित्यज्य सृक्ष्मदेहं विवेश सा
Abandoning her gross body, she entered a subtle form.
पार्षदप्रवरैर्दिव्यैर्वेष्टितं सुमनोहरैः
She was surrounded by excellent divine attendants, enchanting in appearance.
वह्निशौचेन वस्त्रेण सूक्ष्मेण भूषितं वरम्
Adorned with a fine garment purified by fire, she shone splendidly.
सुंदरं शतचक्रं च वलितं रत्नतेजसा
Beautiful, with a hundred wheels, and radiant with the brilliance of jewels.
दृष्ट्वा तमद्भुतं लोका गोपिकाश्चातिविस्मिताः
Seeing that wondrous sight, the gopīs were utterly astonished.
यशोदा बालकं नीत्वा क्रोडे कृत्वा स्तनं ददौ
Yaśodā took the child, placed him on her lap, and gave him her breast.
ददाह देहं तस्याश्च नंदः सानंदर्पूवकम् 4.10.
Nanda, filled with joy, embraced her body as well.
नारद उवाच सा वा का राक्षसीरूपा कथं पुण्यवती सती
Nārada said: How could she, who had the form of a rākṣasī, be virtuous and pure?
बलिकन्या रत्नमाला पुत्रस्नेहं चकार तम्
Ratnamālā, daughter of Bali, developed affection for a son.
मनसा मानसं चक्रे पुत्रस्य सदृशो मम
In her mind, she imagined a son just like her own.
हरिस्तन्मानसं ज्ञात्वा पपौ जन्मांतरे स्तनम्
Hari, knowing her intention, drank her milk in another birth.
दत्त्वा विषस्तनं कृष्णं पूतना राक्षसी मुने
O sage, Pūtanā the rākṣasī gave poisonous breastmilk to Kṛṣṇa.
इत्येवं कथितं विप्र श्रीकृष्ण गुणकीर्तनम्
Thus, O brāhmaṇa, the praise of Śrī Kṛṣṇa's virtues has been told.
एकदा गोकुले साध्वी यशोदा नंदगेहिनी
Once, in Gokula, the virtuous Yaśodā, wife of Nanda—
वात्यारूपं तृणावर्तमागच्छंतं च गोकुलम्
—saw Tṛṇāvarta, in the form of a whirlwind, approaching Gokula.
भाराक्रांता यशोदा च तत्याज बालकं तदा
Overcome by the weight, Yaśodā then set the child down.
एतस्मिन्नंतरे त वात्यारूपधरोऽसुरः
At that moment, the demon took on the form of a whirlwind.
बभंज वृक्षशाखाश्च ह्यंधीभूतं च गोकुलम्
He broke the branches of trees and plunged Gokula into darkness.
असुरोऽपि हरिस्पर्शाज्जगाम हरिमंदिरम्
But the demon, by Hari's touch, attained the abode of Hari.
पांड्यदेशोद्भवो राजा शापाद्दुर्वाससोऽसुरः
The demon, a king born in the land of Pāṇḍya, was cursed by Durvāsas.
