नंदाय तनयं दत्त्वा वसुदेवस्तवांतकम्
Having given your son to Nanda, Vasudeva will be freed from you.
मायांशा कन्यकेयं च वासुदेवः स्वयं हरिः
This girl is a portion of Māyā, and Vāsudeva is Hari himself.
देवक्याः सप्तमो गर्भो वर्द्धते नंदमंदिरे
The seventh embryo of Devakī is growing in Nanda's house.
स्थापयामास मायो तं रोहिणीजठरे किल
Māyā indeed placed that one in Rohiṇī’s womb.
गोकुले तौ च वर्धेते कालौ ते नंदमंदिरे
Both of them are growing up in Gokula; their time is in Nanda's house.
चिंतामवाप सहसा तत्याजाहारमुन्मनाः
He was suddenly seized by anxiety and, distracted, gave up eating.
विषाक्तं च स्तनं कृत्वा शिशवे देहि सत्वरम् 4.10.
Make your breast poisonous and quickly give it to the child.
मायामानुषरूपं च विधाय व्रज योगिनि
Assume a human form by your Māyā, O yoginī, and go.
सर्वरूपं विधातुं त्वं शक्तासि सुप्रतिष्ठिते
You are able to assume all forms, O firmly established one.
जगाम पूतना कंसं प्रणम्य कामचारिणी
Pūtanā, who wandered as she pleased, went to Kaṃsa after bowing to him.
बिभ्रती कबरीभारं मालतीमाल्यसंयुतम्
She wore a mass of hair adorned with garlands of jasmine.
मंजीररशनाभ्यां च कलशब्दं प्रकुर्वती
With anklets and a girdle, she made tinkling sounds.
परिखाभिर्गभीराभिर्दुर्लंघ्याभिश्च वेष्टितम्
It was surrounded by deep moats that were hard to cross.
इंद्रनीलैर्मरकतैः पद्मरागैश्च भूषितम्
It was adorned with sapphires, emeralds, and rubies.
प्राकारैर्गगनस्पर्शैश्चतुर्द्वारसमन्वितैः
With ramparts touching the sky and four gates.
वेष्टितं सुन्दरं रम्यं सुन्दरीगणवेष्टितम्
It was surrounded by beautiful, delightful women.
स्वर्णपात्रवटाकीर्णं गवां कोटिभिरन्वितम् 4.10.
Adorned with golden vessels and surrounded by millions of cows,
दासीनां च सहस्रैश्च कर्मव्यग्रैः समन्वितम् ।। प्रविवेशाश्रमं साध्वी सस्मिता सुमनोहरा
And attended by thousands of maidservants busily engaged in their duties, the virtuous and charming lady entered the hermitage with a gentle smile.
दृष्ट्वा तां प्रविशंतीं च गोप्यो दृष्ट्वानुमेनिरे
Seeing her entering, the gopīs observed her attentively.
प्रणेमुर्गोपिका गोपाः पप्रच्छुः कुशलं च ताम्
The gopīs and gopas offered their respects and inquired about her well-being.
पप्रच्छ कुशलं सा च गोपानां बालकस्य च
She too asked after the welfare of the gopas and the child.
तामूचुर्गोपिकाः सर्वाः का त्वमीश्वरि सांप्रतम्
All the gopīs said to her, 'O lady, who are you at this moment?'
तासां च वचनं श्रुत्वा साप्युवाच मनोहरम्
Hearing their words, she also spoke in a captivating manner.
श्रुतं वाचिकवक्त्रेण तत्त्वं मंगलसूचकम्
The truth, auspiciously indicated, was heard from her spoken words.
श्रुत्वागताहं तं द्रष्टुमाशिषं कर्तुमीप्सिताम् ।। । पुत्रमानय तं दृष्ट्वा यामि कृत्वा तमाशिषम्
Hearing, I have come to see him and to bestow the desired blessing; bring the child—after seeing him and giving the blessing, I shall depart.
ब्राह्मणीवचनं श्रुत्वा यशोदा हृष्टमानसा
Hearing the words of the brāhmaṇī, Yaśodā became delighted in her heart.
कृत्वा क्रोडे तु तं साध्वी चुचुंब च पुनः पुनः ।। 4.10.
Taking the child onto her lap, the virtuous lady kissed him again and again.
अहोद्भुतोऽयं बालस्त सुन्दरो गोपसुन्दरि
Ah, this boy is wonderful, beautiful, O lovely gopī!
कृष्णो विषस्तनं पीत्वा जहास वक्षसि स्थितः
Kṛṣṇa, having drunk the poisoned milk, laughed as he sat upon her breast.
तत्याज बालकं साध्वी प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा पपात ह
The virtuous lady released the child, gave up her life, and fell down.
