The Tortoise, Narasiṃha, Rāma, and the sovereign Lord of Śvetadvīpa—
वैकुण्ठे कमलाकांतो रूपभेदाच्चतुर्भुजः
In Vaikuṇṭha, the beloved of Lakṣmī, by difference of form, is four-armed.
अस्यैव तेजो नित्यं च चित्ते कुर्वंति योगिनः
Yogis always meditate upon this very radiance in their hearts.
शृणु विप्र वर्णयामि यशोदानन्दयोस्तपः
Hear, O brāhmaṇa, I will describe the austerity of Yaśodā and Nanda.
वसूनां प्रवरो नन्दो नाम्ना द्रोणस्तपोधनः
Among the Vasus, Nanda was foremost, known as Droṇa, rich in austerity.
रोहिणी सर्पमाता च कद्रूश्च सर्पकारिणी
Rohiṇī was the mother of serpents, and Kadrū was the one who produced serpents.
एकदा च धरा द्रोणौ पर्वते गन्धमादने
Once, Droṇa and Dhara were on Mount Gandhamādana.
चक्रतुश्च तपस्तत्र वर्षाणामयुतं मुने 4.9.
There, O sage, they performed austerity for ten thousand years.
न ददर्श हरिं द्रोणो धरा चैव तपस्विनी
Droṇa did not see Hari, nor did Dhara, though she was devoted to austerity.
तौ मर्तुकामौ दृष्ट्वा च वाग्बभूवाशरीरिणी
Seeing that both wished to die, a bodiless voice arose.
जन्मांतरे वसुश्रेष्ठ दुर्दर्शं योगिनां विभुम्
In another birth, O best of Vasus, the Lord, difficult to behold even for yogis—
श्रुत्वैवं तद्धराद्रोणौ जग्मतुः स्वालयं सुखात्
Hearing this, Droṇa and Dhara happily returned to their own abode.
यशोदानंदयोरेवं कथितं चरितं तव
Thus has the story of Yaśodā and Nanda been told to you.
एकदा देवमाता च पुष्पोत्सवदिने सती
Once, on the day of the festival of flowers, the mother of the gods, being virtuous—
सुस्नाता सुंदरी देवी रत्नालंकार भूषिता
The beautiful goddess, having bathed, was adorned with ornaments of precious gems.
कस्तूरीबिंदुना सार्द्धं सिंदूरबिंदुसंयुतम्
Together with a mark of musk, she bore a spot of vermilion.
गजमौक्तिकसंयुक्तं नासाग्रं सुमनोहरम्
Her charming nose-tip was decorated with a pearl from an elephant.
वक्रभ्रूभंगिना युक्तं विचित्रकज्जलोज्ज्वलम् 4.9.
Her face was graced with arched brows and shone with elaborate kohl.
पक्वबिंबाधरौष्ठं च सस्मितं सुंदरं सदा
Her lips were red as ripe bimba fruit, always smiling and beautiful.
एवंभूतं मुखं दृष्ट्वा सुंदरी स्वगृहे स्थिता
Seeing such a face, the beautiful woman remained in her own house.
