उपवासांगभूतं च फलदं सिद्धिकारणम्
It is considered a part of the fast, brings reward, and is the cause of success.
अन्यथा फलहानिः स्यात्कृते धारणपारणे
Otherwise, if the rules of restraint and breaking the fast are not followed, the result is lost.
निशायां पारणं कुर्याद्वर्जयित्वा महानिशाम् 4.8.
One should break the fast at night, except during the great night.
सर्वेषां संमतं कुर्यादृते वै रोहिणी व्रतम्
One should perform it as accepted by all, except for the Rohini vow.
न कुर्याद्गर्भवासं च तत्र कृत्वा व्रतं व्रती
Having performed the vow, the observer should not engage in conception there.
भवेद्बुधेंदुसंयुक्ता प्राजापत्यर्क्षसंयुता
It should be done when the moon is joined with Mercury, or with the constellation of Prajapati.
व्रतं तत्र व्रती कुर्यात्पुंसां कोटिं समुद्धरेत्
There, the observer of the vow should perform it, and uplift ten million men.
कृतेनैवोपवासेन प्रीतो भवति माधवः
By the very act of fasting, Mādhava becomes pleased.
फलं ददाति दैत्यारिर्जयन्तीव्रतसंभवम्
The enemy of the Daityas grants the fruit arising from the Jayantī vow.
कुर्वाणो वित्तशाठ्यं च लभते सदृशं फलम्
One who acts with deceit regarding wealth attains a result accordingly.
हन्यात्पुराकृतं पुण्यं चोपवासार्जितं फलम्
He destroys the merit previously earned and the fruit gained by fasting.
तस्मात्प्रयत्नतः कुर्यात्तिथिभांते च पारणम्
Therefore, one should carefully break the fast at the end of the lunar day.
तृतीयेऽह्नि मुनिश्रेष्ठ पारणं कुरुते बुधः 4.8.
On the third day, O best of sages, the wise one breaks the fast.
लभते ब्रह्महत्यां च तत्र भुक्त्वा च नारद
Having eaten at that time, O Nārada, one incurs the sin of killing a Brāhmaṇa.
पुंसामभक्ष्यं शुद्धानामोदनस्य च का कथा
What then of eating pure rice, when even the food forbidden to men is involved?
नाडीनां तदुभे सन्ध्ये दिवसाद्यंतसंज्ञिते
At the junctions of the nāḍīs, which are called the beginnings and ends of the day.
शतजन्मकृतात्पापान्मुच्यते नात्र संशयः
One is freed from sins committed in a hundred births—there is no doubt of this.
सप्तजन्मकृतात्पापान्मुच्यते नात्र संशयः
One is freed from sins committed in seven births—there is no doubt of this.
स भवेन्मातृगामी च ब्रह्महत्याशतं लभेत्
He becomes one who approaches his mother, and incurs the sin of killing a hundred Brahmins.
अनर्हश्चाशुचिः शश्वद्दैवे पित्र्ये च कर्मणि
He is unworthy and impure, always so, in both divine and ancestral rites.
कृमिभिः शूलतुल्यैश्च तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रैश्च भक्षितः
He is devoured by worms, sharp as spears and with fierce fangs.
षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि विष्ठायां च कृमिर्भवेत् 4.8.
For sixty thousand years, he becomes a worm in excrement.
श्वापदः शतजन्मानि सृगालः सप्त जन्म च
He is born as a wild beast for a hundred lives, and as a jackal for seven births.
ततो भवेन्नरो मूको गलत्कुष्ठी सदातुरः
After that, he is born as a mute man, afflicted with leprosy and always suffering.
तदंते च भवेद्दस्युर्धर्महीनश्च गृध्रकः
At the end of that, he becomes a thief, devoid of righteousness, and a vulture.
ततो भवेद्देवलको ब्राह्मणश्च सदाऽशुचिः
After that, he becomes a Devalaka, and a Brahmin who is always impure.
तावद्धनानि वा दद्याद्यद्भुक्तं द्विगुणं भवेत्
He should give wealth equal to what was consumed, or twice that amount.
कुर्याद्द्वादशसंख्याकान्यथार्थं तद्व्रते नरः व्रतोपवासपूजानां विधानमकृते च यत्
He should perform twelve acts of atonement for that offense, if the prescribed rites of vow, fasting, and worship were not done.
नारद उवाच जगाम स्वगृहं नन्दः किं चकार महां प्रभुः
Nārada said: Nanda went to his own house; what did the great Lord do?
किञ्चकार हरिस्तत्र कतिवर्षस्थितिः प्रभोः
What did Hari do there, and for how many years did the Lord remain?
