सुप्रियः सर्वदेवानां धूपोऽयं गृह्यतां हरे
This incense, most pleasing to all the gods, may it be accepted, O Hari.
सुप्रदीपो दीप्तिकरो दीपोऽयं गृह्यतां हरे
This lamp, most excellent and radiant, may it be accepted, O Hari.
जीवनं सर्वबीजानां पानार्थं गृह्यतां हरे 4.8.
Let the life of all seeds be taken for the sake of offering to Hari.
शरीरभूषणवरं माल्यं च प्रतिगृह्यताम्
Let the finest garland, an ornament for the body, also be accepted.
व्रतस्थानस्थितं द्रव्यं हरये देयमेव च
Whatever substance is set aside for a vow or sacred place should indeed be given to Hari.
वंशवृद्धिकराण्येव गृह्यतां परमेश्वर
Let that which increases the family line be received, O Supreme Lord.
तान्पूज्य भक्तिभावेन दद्यात्पुष्पांजलित्रयम्
Having worshipped them with devotion, one should offer three handfuls of flowers.
गणेशं कार्त्तिकेयं च ब्रह्माणं च शिवं शिवाम्
To Ganesha, Karttikeya, Brahma, Shiva, and Parvati—
शेषं सुदर्शनं चैव पार्षदप्रवरांस्तथा ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च नैवेद्यं दत्त्वा दद्याच्च दक्षिणाम्
And also to Shesha and Sudarshana, as well as the foremost attendants; after offering food to the Brahmins, one should also give them gifts.
कथां च जन्माध्यायोक्तां शृणुयाद्भक्ति भावतः
One should listen with devotion to the story told in the chapter on the birth.
प्रभाते चाह्निकं कृत्वा संपूज्य श्रीहरिं मुदा
In the morning, after performing daily rites, one should joyfully worship Shri Hari.
वेदार्थं च समालोच्य संहितां च पुरातनीम्
One should reflect on the meaning of the Vedas and the ancient Samhita.
उपवासे जागरणे व्रते किं वा फलं मुने 4.8.
O sage, what is the fruit of fasting, keeping vigil, or observing a vow?
स एव मुख्यकालश्च तत्र जातः स्वयं हरिः
At that very principal time, Hari himself was born there.
जयं पुण्यं च कुरुते जयंती तेन संस्मृता
He brings victory and merit; for this reason, that day is called Jayanti.
सर्वापवादः कालोऽयं प्रधानः सर्वसंमतः
This time removes all reproach and is considered supreme and universally accepted.
तत्र जागरणं कृत्वा यश्चोपोष्य व्रतं चरेत्
Whoever keeps vigil there and observes the vow after fasting—
वर्जनीया प्रयत्नेन सप्तमीसहिताष्टमी अविद्धायां कऋक्षायां जातो देवकिनंदनः
One must carefully avoid the eighth day joined with the seventh; for on the pure, unblemished eighth, the son of Devaki was born.
वेदवेदांगगुप्तेतिविशिष्टं मंगलक्षणे
It is marked as auspicious, being especially protected by the Veda and its branches.
तिथ्यंते च हरिं स्मृत्वा कृत्वा देवार्चनं व्रती
At the end of the lunar day, remembering Hari and having worshipped the gods, the vow-holder should act.
उपवासांगभूतं च फलदं सिद्धिकारणम्
It is considered a part of the fast, brings reward, and is the cause of success.
अन्यथा फलहानिः स्यात्कृते धारणपारणे
Otherwise, if the rules of restraint and breaking the fast are not followed, the result is lost.
निशायां पारणं कुर्याद्वर्जयित्वा महानिशाम् 4.8.
One should break the fast at night, except during the great night.
सर्वेषां संमतं कुर्यादृते वै रोहिणी व्रतम्
One should perform it as accepted by all, except for the Rohini vow.
न कुर्याद्गर्भवासं च तत्र कृत्वा व्रतं व्रती
Having performed the vow, the observer should not engage in conception there.
भवेद्बुधेंदुसंयुक्ता प्राजापत्यर्क्षसंयुता
It should be done when the moon is joined with Mercury, or with the constellation of Prajapati.
व्रतं तत्र व्रती कुर्यात्पुंसां कोटिं समुद्धरेत्
There, the observer of the vow should perform it, and uplift ten million men.
कृतेनैवोपवासेन प्रीतो भवति माधवः
By the very act of fasting, Mādhava becomes pleased.
फलं ददाति दैत्यारिर्जयन्तीव्रतसंभवम्
The enemy of the Daityas grants the fruit arising from the Jayantī vow.
कुर्वाणो वित्तशाठ्यं च लभते सदृशं फलम्
One who acts with deceit regarding wealth attains a result accordingly.
