चकार सहदेवश्च व्याधिसिन्धुविमर्दनम्
And Sahadeva composed 'The Crusher of the Ocean of Diseases.'
च्यवनो जीवदानं च चकार भगवानृषिः
The venerable sage Cyavana composed 'The Bestower of Life.'
सर्वसारं चन्द्रसुतो जाबालस्तन्त्रसारकम् 1.16.
The son of Chandra composed 'The Essence of All,' and Jabala composed 'The Essence of Treatises.'
पैलो निदानं करथस्तन्त्रं सर्वधरं परम्
Paila composed 'Diagnosis,' and Karatha the supreme treatise 'The Support of All.'
चिकित्साशास्त्रबीजानि त न्त्राण्येतानि षोडश
These sixteen treatises are the seeds of the science of therapy.
मथित्वा ज्ञानमन्त्रेणैवायुर्वेदपयोनिधिम्
Having churned the ocean of Ayurveda with the mantra of knowledge,
एतानि क्रमशो दृष्ट्वा दिव्यां भास्करसंहिताम्
Having seen these in order, the divine Bhaskara Samhita was composed.
व्याधेस्तत्त्वपरिज्ञानं वेदनायाश्च निग्रहः
The true understanding of disease and the control of pain—
आयुर्वेदस्य विज्ञाता चिकित्सासु यथार्थवित्
He who knows Ayurveda and is accurate in therapies is the knower.
जनकः सर्वरोगाणां दुर्वारो दारुणो ज्वरः
The origin of all diseases is the fever that is hard to restrain and dreadful.
भीमस्त्रिपादस्त्रिशिराः षड्भुजो नवलोचनः
Terrible, three-footed, three-headed, six-armed, with nine eyes—
मन्दाग्निस्तस्य जनको मन्दाग्नेर्जनकास्त्रयः
Low digestive fire is its origin; and low fire has three causes—
वायुजः पित्तजश्चैव श्लेष्मजश्च तथैव च 1.16.
Wind-born, bile-born, and phlegm-born, likewise.
पाण्डुश्च कामलः कुष्ठः शोथः प्लीहा च शूलकः
Pandu, Kamala, Kushtha, Shotha, Plīha, and Shulaka—
मूत्रकृच्छ्रश्च गुल्मश्च रक्तदोषविकारजः
Urinary disorders, abdominal tumors, and diseases arising from blood impurities,
भ्रमरी सन्निपातश्च विषूची दारुणी सति
Bhramari, tridoshic disorders, and the severe disease called Vishuchi,
मृत्युकन्यासुताश्चैते जरा तस्याश्च कन्यका
These are the daughters of Death, and old age is their maiden.
एते चोपायवेत्तारं न गच्छन्ति च संयतम्
These do not approach one who knows the proper means and is self-controlled.
चक्षुर्जलं च व्यायामः पादाधस्तैलमर्दनम्
Washing the eyes, exercise, and oil massage below the feet,
वसन्ते भ्रमणं वह्निसेवां स्वल्पां करोति यः
He who, in spring, walks about and engages in only a little fire exposure,
खातशीतोदकस्नायी सेवते चन्दनद्रवम् नोपयाति जरा तं च निदाघेऽनिलसेवकम्
Bathing in cool water from a pit, using sandalwood paste—old age does not come to him who, in summer, avoids wind exposure.
प्रावृष्युष्णोदकस्नायी घनतोयं न सेवते
In the rainy season, one who bathes in warm water and does not use dense water,
शरद्रौद्रं न गृह्णाति भ्रमणं तत्र वर्जयेत् 1.16.
In autumn, he does not accept harshness and should avoid wandering at that time.
खातस्नायी च हेमन्ते काले वह्निं च सेवते
In winter, one who bathes in a pit and makes use of fire,
शिशिरेंऽशुकवह्निं च नवोष्णान्नं च सेवते
In the cold season, one uses sun and fire, and consumes freshly warm food.
सद्योमांसं नवान्नं च बालास्त्रीक्षीरभोजनम्
Fresh meat, new rice, and the milk of a young woman are eaten.
भुङ्क्ते सदन्नं क्षुत्काले तृष्णायां पीयते जलम्
He eats good food at the time of hunger, and drinks water when thirsty.
दधि हैयङ्गवीनं च नवनीतं तथा गुडम्
Curd, clarified butter, fresh butter, and also jaggery,
शुष्कमांसं स्त्रियं वृद्धां बालार्कं तरुणं दधि
Dried meat, an old woman, the young sun, and curd that is not fresh,
रात्रौ ये दधि सेवन्ते पुंश्चलीश्च रजस्वलाः
Those who consume curd at night, as well as prostitutes and menstruating women,
